had an argument with a friend recently over gale as a character. i don't think he's a villain. she does. (i know he had a negative character arc and he is at fault for prim's death. but i also know that he is the revolutionary in the series, and we are so conditioned to believe revolutionaries are blindingly, dangerously violent.)

anyways. i really like your hunger games analyses and am interested in your thoughts -- where are you on gale? is he kind? is he a write-off, at the end? is he nothing but a metaphor for the fire katniss chooses to give up?

oh, you’re going to have to let me sit with this one because I go back and forth on Gale a lot

he’s not a villain: I can state that

he’s: a good brother and son, a friend to Katniss, a savior of the refugees of Twelve, a victim of horrific oppression, who should by no means be expected to make his trauma palatable (we extend so much grace to often downright nasty Haymitch, but not to Gale? I don’t think it’s fair) … also, he and Haymitch are like the only characters I can recall openly expressing a desire for babies and that’s … just so soft 🥹

he’s also: a messy young man who can be presumptuous and callous in his behavior to Katniss, is a lot more rebellious in word than in action in my opinion (this is my spiciest Gale take 😬), and a soldier given a lot of power from the jump, who starts to believe that anything goes in war, including some pretty inhumane tactics

I like him, and I think he’s a good character who deserves so much more empathy (I mean come on: people rag on him and then fawn over Plutarch??? please), and equally, I don’t like him, and he really annoys me, and (and I know why it’s there) I really wish he wasn’t a romantic consideration for Katniss because she hardly gives him a fair shake and he would have served his narrative purpose just as well as a friend or relative I’m afraid

I’m just as likely to criticize/dunk on Mr. Hawthorne as defend him at this point in my relationship with him
