bourne

Version 1.1.2 of bourne is out (fba748b), without a NEWS file describing the changes! However, the history indicates that it is compatible with a more recent version of mocha and it presents better error messages now.

bourbon

We're trying out version 2.0.0, release candidate 1, of bourbon (0ec0115). So please, try it out and let us know what's broken.

Out of nowhere, Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) changed the formatting of something (7ec8959).

But Phil LaPier (plapier) removed animation-basic (316f2a7), cleaned up the default padding for buttons (2a46225), changed the radial-gradient in a way I don't totally understand (94506ea), added some shorthands for transition (3342577), removed the position mixin (4621347), and updated the README (5f1176d and f5cdfad).

factory_girl

Version 3.0.0 of factory_girl is out: read the blog post to know more. In summary: goodbye five-year-old Ruby 1.8, goodbye two-year-old Rails 2, goodbye four-year-old FactoryGirl syntax!

suspenders

Minor cleanups to suspenders this week: Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) fixed some markdown (107b103) and Andy Waite (andyw8) removed some annoying whitespace probably left by someone using TextMate (32104f9) and noted the fact that you must be running Postgres while suspending (de20630).

paul_revere

In paul_revere news this week, Cameron Desautels (camdez) pointed out that controller helpers need to use the helper class method (3b74d84).

shoulda

The shoulda gem got taken care of by Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) this week: the Rails test helpers use the installed shoulda-matchers and shoulda-context gems instead of the GitHub ones (6f3b7b4); the dependencies are updated to more recent versions, and the tests require the user of bundler now (34d9f4a); the Rakefile doesn't present a clobber action, whatever that did (058724b); and the contribution guidelines now reflect the fact that we've wanted pull requests for the past three years (f75da74).

shoulda-matchers

This week, Gabe decided to take all pull requests on shoulda-matchers over the past few…years. Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) also did a bunch of cleanup and maintainance (c10cf34, 31b140f, c27de41, 7d70805, 7950d00, 3d6b8a8, ff0d364, ca6d428, ba78ed0, 8724cd2, c493c40, f841805, 0746b79, 963a293, 65d6d1c, afaf72b, and 76127ea).

Norway's own Håkon Lerring (Hakon) added as_instance_of to the serialize matcher (9b5e972, 3b891cf, and d9906d8). Hey Håkon, I'm moving to your neighboring country soon!

Matthew Daubert (MDaubs) added an odd query_the_database matcher, which could be useful for making sure a n+1 is good and dead (0ecb774, 93cd34e, 56de191, 8e7fbc5, 558d1df, and 00a9a68).

Frank Luithle (sigi) extended the allow_value matcher to handle multiple values (cab62a1, c86d8e2, and 026927b).

Luca Guidi (jodosha) updated our dependencies. Sweet. (1956736)

And last but not least, Mike Bloy (bloy) extended the association matchers to understand inverse relations and to check the correct class (a4cb684, 5c173bf, and c863f7e).

capybara-webkit

The capybara-webkit gem got a fix for the RSpec matcher from Chris Nicola (lucisferre), possibly due to an API change elsewhere (8fb7ccd); Will Ryan added keyCode and which to the keypress, keydown, and keyup triggers (c6103e7 and fb97fe8); and Joe Ferris (jferris) refactored everything (1ed54b1, 3ebe0fa, 67d5e3d, 354180a, 85dcc72, and 5b57eee), plus stopped clearing the page on the URL about:blank (b3b1adf).

dotfiles

A bug fix to dotfiles this week as Claudio Ortolina (cloud8421) changed the .vimrc to load the local configs from the homedir instead of just about anywhere (9dc7f9c).

appraisal

A feature in appraisal this week: Gregory Ostermayr (gregors) exposed the bundle command that Appraisal uses to install the Gemfile-specific gems (6b41d07 and 8023273). Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) stopped the tests from loading shoulda; instead it loads rake, which is already installed (beaee3b).

fake_braintree

The contribution guidelines were written for fake_braintree by Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw), which are mostly the same as our others (bd5220a). Namely, we love tests and pull requests.

paperclip

Mostly quiet on the paperclip front, except Dmitry Polushkin (dmitry) snuck a backward-incompatible change into the generated migration (b7bfdec).

factory_girl

Version 2.6.4 of factory_girl is out (b7f3789), with a bug fix from Ian Duggan (ijcd) such that you can use the name of a transient attribute when setting other attributes (0d7520e), and Joshua Clayton (joshuaclayton) reduced the number of times a factory assigns to an object, just in case mutation matters (f5d4db1).

capybara-webkit

Version 0.11.0 of capybara-webkit is out (464a7bf and 39be2c8). From David Reese (whatcould) we get support for the oninput trigger (fc5cba3); Moreno Carullo (morenocarullo) fixed compilation on 23-bit Microsoft Windows (f09ba15 and 4b044cc); James Tucker (raggi) forced the server to bind straight to localhost instead of the free-for-all it was previously (fc56a13).

clearance

Clearance 0.16.0 is out (4cacef5 and a01d81f), in which Chris Dillon (squarism) added Blowfish password encryption (1a779c8 and 40362e92). Wild.

shoulda and shoulda-matchers

Small stuff in shoulda shoulda-matchers over the past week, as Steve Richert (laserlemon) fixed the little image on our README that shows that the build is always broken (43a3cb7) and Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) cleaned up the test suite, using let instead of instance variables (f1a3dca, 62207b4, bb59b74).

cocaine

In cocaine news, Brian Durand (bdurand) included an option to use the posix-spawn gem, potentially improving performance (aa36e45, 98dff3d, 2391d9f). Mike Burns (mike-burns) removed Gabe's bundler config, 'cause really (f77c1b5).

bourbon

While drinking bourbon this week, Kyle Fiedler documented flex-grid (a85ce35), Frank (frankzilla) added a hide-text mixin to make it easier to hide some text, e.g. .image-to-be-replaced { @include hide-text } (3f736ea). Dylan Lacey threw more Ruby at the installation rake task, which brought cross-platform compatibility to the world (281ed16, ee78754, b853f14, 9b85a13, 8b7dec4, e4ed1b3).

paperclip

Performance gains in paperclip this week as Luke Griffiths (Sporky023) and Mathieu Martin (webmat) switched from find to find_each (0c1e812, 32199e2, 35052eb). Mathieu also allowed in styles with numeric names (8edccdc). Matthias Viehweger (kronn) fixed a typo; thanks, Matthias (e927180)!

One change to bourbon this week as Thibaut (Thibaut) removed the obsolete -moz-inline-block display type from the inline-block mixin (de69a76).

capybara-webkit

Version 0.10.1 of capybara-webkit is out (8f2cdef). Matthew Mongeau (halogenandtoast) made it such that Swedes can install it on Måndag (1a28da8), Marc Schwieterman (marcisme) improved the generate_command rake task to also handle the CommandFactory.cpp (c15cd3a), and Joe Ferris (jferris) updated the link to our QT docs (a4fcb8e).

cocaine

On cocaine, which is a hell of a gem, Alban Peignier (albanpeignier) exposed the command's exit status (bfe0ba6).

factory_girl

Added to factory_girl this week, though written two weeks ago, Joshua Clayton (joshuaclayton) replaced the AssociationRunner with what he calls the FactoryRunner, which can run any strategy (4145a6e).

On the factory_girl_rails side, Joshua Flanagan (joshuaflanagan) added support for namespaced models, e.g. Article::Comment (7df9c9b)

kumade

In kumade this week Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) fixed a completely broken rake task (43ea8b8), discovered that && reads more nicely than and (50b8102), and removed the Gemfile.lock because everyone hated it (278c8bf). SengMing Tan (tansengming) changed the command-line program to produce false when the deployment fails, which means you can use it in more scripts (7e37d61). Klaus Hartl (carhartl) fixed a bug with cedar, where restarting the app didn't work (07e30d4).

paperclip

As usual, a bunch of bugfixes and functionality made it into paperclip this week. Keep those pull requests coming!

Prem Sichanugrist (sikachu) removed deprecated methods, which means you should watch for a major version bump soon. How exciting! (defd425 and 9e38958). He and Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) updated the README with stylistic and some content improvements (4e4fa9d and 5dba614). Prem also fixed a bug where an RSpec matcher would run the post processing; that's wild (0efa384).

Robert Pankowecki (paneq) improved the docs to show how to conditionally skip post processing (49ddd12). Jesse Cantara rewinds files after Paperclip is done with them, before handing them back to the user (7cb7384). Beachbc (beachbc) passed S3 creds as a lambda (b89044f), and Joshua Clayton (joshuaclayton) added a :s3_url_options option, which can be either a hash or a lambda that produces a hash, that allows the user to augment the image URL with params, but only if the image is stored in S3 (f7284b9). Josh, while making the aforementioned change, noticed that we were using shoulda oddly (!), so he moved the method definitions out from the contexts (e64021e).

Speaking of shoulda, version 3.0.1 is out, without any packaging issues (62f5b82); this was discovered and fixed by Prem Sichanugrist (sikachu). Prem also dropped Rubinius 2.0 support for shoulda-matchers 94dbf74). Blake Thomson (thomsbg) added a validates_confirmation_of matcher (1b5fc27c); Raphaël emourgeon (osaris) expanded the have_sent_email matcher to understand reply_to (cabe44c7); and Sylvestre Mergulhao (mergulhao) fixed the allow_mass_assignment_of_matcher documentation to be copy-pasteable (3a75c687).

shoulda is version 3.0.0! Someone needed to cut it, and Joe Ferris (jferris) stepped up to make the release (4f0c363).

high_voltage

A new version of high_voltage is out this week, with contributions from Matthew Horan (mhoran). Matt fixed the content_path hack on PagesController such that you can subclass and override the content path properly (0d84952, 9c7c0ad, 8884f70, and d4ba056, e4b1ce9). He also added Rails 3.1 compatibility (7556fcd). Joe Ferris (jferris) pushed version 1.1.1 out (09c2da4, a60cc5b, and a1f2476).

bourbon

What's new in version 1.4.0 of bourbon? Glad I asked myself, in writing. Phil LaPier (plapier) changed buttons from display: inline to display: inline-block, removing text decoration on anchor buttons (8bea3a7). He executed the "extract mixin" Bourbon refactoring pattern on render-gradients (9fd50d1), moving the linear and radial gradients to the root (92ecae3), all so he could support more gradients in the border-image mixin (0f91303). Transparent fallback colors are now allowed (b409982 and 5d86ebd), a new user-select mixin was added (b00d334), and finally Phil bumped the version (f9ee911).

paperclip

A new version of paperclip is out—version 2.7.0 was pushed by Mike Burns (mike-burns) to Rubygems (760a4e0).

Mike—that's me—flipped out at a failing test and reverted the :swallow_stderr support that was pull in last week (04c9514). The tests didn't work and the code was ugly. As a general request: if you're adding code to an ugly codebase, add beautiful code!

Prem Sichanugrist (sikachu) updated the docs to point out that awk-sdk must be a specific version (22a2a85). He also added support for Rails 3.2 (77c5268).

Tom Hughes (tomhughes) noted that the fingerprint field is not cleared when an attachment is deleted, though all other fields are…and he fixed that (189ee9c). Pat George (pcg79) finally fixed the failure message for validates_attachment_size, which was written very incorrectly, for years (45b7dac).

kumade

Nothing new on kumade. Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) stopped ignoring the Gemfile.lock, despite what Yehuda suggests (a2a2278); simplified the name of a scenario (ffd1aef); and set up Travis CI to run a full integration test (04d9f6b).

shoulda-matchers

The shoulda-matchers project had a very ancient list of contribution guidelines so I, Mike Burns (mike-burns), updated them to reflect the fact that pull requests do not actually suck (81cd02b).

bourne

More tiny commits on bourne from Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw), where he added Travis CI support (55248d6) and fixed some code formatting (f31aa72). Yup.

capybara-webkit

The only news for capybara-webkit this week is that Joe Ferris (jferris, a.k.a. JƒF) does not want bug reports about system-specific compilation issues (6b724ef). We simply can't fix them.

clearance

Nothing new on clearance, but Dan Croak (croaky) did get it working under Travis CI (3430e88).

appraisal

Tiny cleanups on appraisal as Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) changed some parens around and removed some of those awful if modifiers (7a5af59), and Brian Cardarella (bcardarella) updated the README to use actual English (1883b80).

copycopter_client

Our little copycopter_client library, which talks to the amazing Copycopter app (which, in my opinion, is the best thing since sliced bread), got some infrastructure cleanup from Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) around themes like Travis CI (91ac190) and bundler (612fc4e), plus sorting the blurbs (500dac7). Chris Hunt (huntca) swooped in with the ability to export to YAML (7d44323, 77b28bb, cf951f1, 2955575), booyah!

factory_girl

Version 2.6.0 of factory_girl is out (2d19c46), with work by Joshua Clayton (joshuaclayton). The docs got an update, including an example of how to create a has_many association factory easily (9c6c252). The new :method option has been renamed to :strategy, following thoughtbot's recent obsession with design patterns (791591b).

capybara-webkit

Marching right along, capybara-webkit version 0.10.0 is out (6d37e48). Marc Schwieterman (marcisme) added a current_url method (caa86b7 and 5eacd08) and reset! method (eaec979). Igor Zubkov (biow0lf) fixed some specs (9eb8e55)! Matthew Mongeau (halogenandtoast) abstracted out the make, qmake, and spec paths into environment variables (4a6b766). Jason Petersen (jasonmp85) fixed a bug where select_option and unselect_option methods were mutating the underlying HTML in ways the W3C were very unhappy with (2fef844 and acd6e47).

appraisal

Our wonderful little appraisal gem got a documentation patch from Kate Gengler (kategengler) explaining that the Appraisals file must be named Appraisals (adec57d). Ryan Bigg (radar) added the option of loading the Gemfile from an environment variable, BUNDLE_GEMFILE (e41fdfc). Prem Sichanugrist (sikachu) released version 0.4.1 (4da9c66).

clearance

Despite the lack of a release this week, Dan Croak (croaky) put clearance on Travis CI (3430e88 and 91674c6).

bourbon

Neat improvements for bourbon, as always. Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) fixed Ruby 1.8 support (45f6806). Frank (frankzilla) added clearfix (df3b82c, ac172bc, 980035c, and a1825ee). Patrick Bougie (pbougie) fixed border-radius for older Mozilla (f734db4). Kyle Fiedler (kylefiedler) added a flexible grid (0db24f5, 2bb0f63). Thibaut (Thibaut) fixed a bug in the box shadows (60292da).

diesel

Infrastructural changes to diesel this week, as Prem Sichanugrist (sikachu) made it work with the latest version of Rails, trimmed its dependencies down, and fixed it on Travis CI (6481f8f, 2dc7427, caadb84, 183762d, af52bbb, 5f57595, 4f115e9, bb4e627).

paperclip

It was bug fix week in paperclip land, as we wage on in the constant battle to keep the Issues count at 0. Prem Sichanugrist (sikachu) made sure we check for class_attribute before calling it, fixing a problem in one specific verion of Rails (4b79530); handled the case where the S3 object does not exist (56012bf); found and fixed a case where the style name was not a symbol (9ad074a); and cleared off an annoying warning from a redefined constant in the test suite (7045e29). Chris Apolzon (apolzon) meanwhile fixed a bug where stderr was leaking out in undesired ways (58671eb).

Commits on suspenders this week bring us instructions on how to use the app with Heroku (257ea39 and 5a4c257), revised documentation "that is awesome, not terrible" (c5ba370), and a bug fix on Heroku: specifying the environment can sometimes raise an error (b45e57f)—all thanks to our Dan Croak (croaky). paperclip

A tiny but important change to paperclip this week from Abel Martin (abelmartin): he documented how to use the Paperclip test helpers from Test::Unit (9d7b0dc, e8d5331, and 5f3b88d).

factory_girl

For the first week ever factory_girl saw one tiny refactoring and no new features. Joshua "The Refactorer" Clayton (joshuaclayton) cleaned up the stub proxy—the build stategy that is invoked when you use FactoryGirl.build_stubbed—by completely removing the constructor and delaying the actual construction of the stub object (8ce897f). This is part of a larger refactoring he is doing.

capybara-webkit

Some peace and quiet on capybara-webkit this week, when Joe Ferris (jferris) removed some stray print-debugging and general Ruby whining (5adab74).

dotfiles

Dan Croak (croaky) dedicated some time to our dotfiles over the week, improving documentation on how to use and upgrade it (87685f1 and 326ceb4), organizing and adding shell aliases for working with Heroku (352dcad, 6458ae7, and cbea59b), and deciding that the Github color scheme is better than the vividchalk color scheme in vim (de071e9).

Since last week was Thanksgiving here in the States, here's a double-whammy: everything that happened last week and everything that's happened this week, in one blog post!

suspenders

The big deal with suspenders, our app app, is that version 0.3.2 is officially out! Since 0.3.1 on October 28th we've added an email validator, raised email delivery errors in the development environment, added Heroku support (try the --heroku flag), and switched to bundler for the gem itself.

While Dan Croak (croaky) was releasing 0.3.2 (40690ae) he also made sure to document the --heroku and --clearance flags (02a8bb0). Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) added a missing bundler/setup to the Rakefile, tying everything together neatly (d09ee5b).

Above I mentioned how Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) added bundler/setup to the Rakefile of suspenders. He also did it to shoulda-matchers (9d79124), shoulda (8054563), high_voltage (ec656e1), bourne (9d21677), flutie (7863d14), shoulda-context (75a8384), factory_girl_rails (797a985), and pacecar of all things (fb972c0).

bourbon

Version 1.2.0 of bourbon is out, bringing more Sass mixins into your life. Phil LaPier (plapier) added support for the CSS3 appearance (e888e0a) and background-size (4588c5c) properties, and added $georgia, $helvetica, $lucida-grande, and $verdana variables (4ba1cff). He also updated the docs to reflect this (d23064b), cleaned up some warnings (99946bb), and made the release (93beb25).

paperclip

The past two weeks saw an improvement for gem authors in paperclip: Mike Burns (mike-burns) removed the Paperclip::Options object, replacing it with a Hash. Any option you pass to has_attached_file is thus available to your underlying Paperclip extension without any extra work and with a canonical interface (5a7769b).

Prem Sichanugrist (sikachu) continued on his quest for having Paperclip work on CI with Rubinius; he tried removing the generated rbc files so the CI server will generate them every time (2c08152).

factory_girl

In the past two weeks factory_girl has seen three releases: 2.3.0 (85d4735, 2fdabdb, and 89b9a82), 2.3.1 (e15ae8d), and 2.3.2 (17eacf0). Joshua Clayton (joshuaclayton) has been hard at work, you see.

As a result, dynamic attributes and callbacks in traits are called in the right order, closing #247 (1eb7e1b and 65e5e25). Also, traits can be added to factories dynamically, when creating an object (442ba18). For example, if you have an :admin trait you can make an admin user on the fly with FactoryGirl.create(:user, :admin, :name => "Frank Blank").

The other pile of commits from Josh are all internal refactorings. Things like removing the Proxy#associate method in place of using Proxy#set everywhere (3ed2f62, f47c03c, and d3a7b7e), cleaning up the require statements (9472a14), consolidating and documenting all exceptions in the FactoryGirl class (c46c090), handling nil blocks when running a factory (2bf5cea) and when creating it in general (86f971b), delaying the sorting of attributes until the last minute by using a lighter-weight array instead of hash (d563b94), making bold claims about inheritance that some blog post authors disagree with (557cce6), moving Proxy::Stub#next_id into the private namespace (0c31b6e), taking an ignored argument to a block so some versions of Ruby don't complain (c93dea5), defaulting the creation method to save instead of nil (5bbbcb9), singularizing Attribute#aliases_for? into Attribute#alias_for? (f247968), using his beloved Null Object pattern to reduce some conditionals (fba404a and b339c8f), adding a common #to_proc method across all attributes and then invoking methods with #[] instead of #call (fba6f33 and 3282eea), straight-up removing dead code from the AttributeList (56a6f67), and passing overrides through to the runner class (5fc57da).

Gotta break a lot of eggs to make an omelette. Speaking of, Gabe found a broken version.rb and fixed it (1e47af0).

clearance

Another doc week for clearance where Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) observed that we test it against Rails 3.1.0 (f7c5e3b) and Matthew Burket (Mab879) noted that you must migrate the database before running rake, when testing (39a6ac5 and 8b9e89b).

fake_braintree

New features in our Braintree fake object, appropriately named fake_braintree! Gabe Berke-Williams (gabebw) added support for FakeBraintree.generated_transaction (d1bbcb7, 917a235, 4fc470d, and 4cb5cb0), Braintree::Subscription.update (fab3c92), and Braintree::Customer.delete (c2aa516). Joe Ferris (jferris) started work on add-ons (312cfac).

Gabe also did some lovely documenting; now you can learn about how to use this in Cucumber (c163c4d), how to avoid calling FakeBraintree.activate (dff3e51), whether the build is broken (499cb05 and 1b1a532), and what the difference is between declining and verifying a card (625993a). Additionally the Subscription class was refactored (3ed090e), the tests were made more explicit (a23a61c), and the tests pass (0a12182).
