Food and drink options in the historical open air cinema of Thision near the Acropolis of Athens, which first opened in 1935 and was only ever shut during the Axis Occupation of Greece. The cinema has attracted some touristic interest as of late (within reason), which is why the bar menu is offered in both Greek and English. The handwritten menu is taped on a picture of the French comedian Fernandel (1903 - 1971). My favourite detail of the picture; the tiny sticker of the “Jesus watching you” meme next to the option for alcoholic beverages.
This decorational composition is an intentional homage to the side of Greece I treasure but I feel it comes from a place of genuine sentiment and need for perseverance of the old cinema’s legacy without excluding the necessary and / or humorous updates, and as such it is in and of itself authentic.
The photo is taken by Dionysis Andrianopoulos for the magazine sold with the newspaper KATHIMERINI, issue 1,158 - this special issue focused exclusively on cinema. I took a photo of the picture from the magazine page (hence it is a little distorted at places) and I have edited it slightly for better definition on screen.
