Welcome to Wisewood. We’ll keep your secrets if you keep ours. Natalie Collins hasn’t heard from her sister in more than half a year. The
This morning, I asked the cards “Where am I in my life right now?” I drew the Emperor, Strength and the 6 of Pentacles from This Might Hurt Tarot. 🌟 Sometimes, it’s wise to follow the rules and remain steadfast and make myself a solid foundation so that I can go forwards. I need a sold base to build upon go give myself stability. I find it hard to remain in the physical as so much of my world is spent in the spiritual and the ethereal that I often lose sight of the world around me. This is a call to pay attention to the world that I’ve built and the world that thrives all around me. Though dreams are lovely, it’s always a good idea to pay attention to what I have. ✨ There is so much strength inside of me. However, sometimes, the most difficult thing for me to do is to love myself. I may have tamed the parts of myself that I didn’t love so that I can look at them with more clarity, but I need to realize that all of me is deserving of love, even the parts of myself that I don’t particularly like. It can be difficult to do that, but I’m worthy of loving myself and everything that is within me. I just have to be strong enough to love all of me. 🎇 Kindness is key. To make myself a solid foundation and to love myself as much as I can, I need to remember that everything in life is a journey and that part of that journey is being kind with myself when I stumble. I find it so easy to be kind to others, but really struggle with showing myself kindness and generosity. I have to remember that I’m worthy of love and kindness too. I have to stop being so hard on myself and embrace self kindness as I move forwards so that I can sparkle on. ⭐ #tarot #tarotreadersofinstagram #thismighthurt #whereami #emperor #sability #physicalworld #strength #selflove #selfkindness #bravery #sixofpentacles #kindness #kindnessforself #kindnessforothers #charity #worthy #whereihavebeen #whereiam #whereimgoing #sparkleon #shinebright #likeadiamond #cardoftheday https://www.instagram.com/p/CWqP-LIrEA_/?utm_medium=tumblr
Card of the Day - Ace of Swords From “The This Might Hurt Tarot Deck by Isabella Rotman @this_might_hurt https://www.thismighthurttarot.com Knowledge, clarity, breakthrough, and cutting past the emotions to the root of things, the ace of swords is not pulling punches today. Today this is a smack to the face - sometimes the feelings about a thing can obfuscate the facts of a thing, and this ace with sword upright challenges us to get right to the matter of what we are examining in an issue or our lives. In the RWS (and in many RWS clones), this card is depicted with the hand holding the sword emerging from a much lighter cloud than Rotman depicts. It is actually one of the intriguing differences to me between different Smith-Waite decks, checking out how colors change meaning. Faces are the other major difference I look at between reprints or manipulations, as some are clearly depicted in interesting ways and others are not (see last 2 images to see what I mean). Rotman’s depiction to me hits that place of clarity from the shadow, from those dark places of uncertainty into the light. If this is a breakthrough for you today, take a look into your muck to find the brilliance that wants to burst forth. What also pops out at me today is those leaves falling from the wreath. They look a bit like tears from where I sit - this may not be comfortable, this cutting through or bursting forth with clarity. So be it. Not all clarity is comfortable after all. As the card deck names - This Might Hurt. Stay strong, upright, and know that in having clarity and breakthrough you might have the chance to seize that wreath of flowers. #CardOfTheDay #CardOfTheDay🔮 #Tarot #TarotCardOfTheDay #ThisMightHurt #ClarityMayNotBeComfortable #BreakthroughCrew #OutOfTheMuck #tarotreadersofinstagram #queertarotreader https://www.instagram.com/p/CJjSsIChaiZ/?igshid=en9q8s9nrvn9
Card of the Day - 2 of Pentacles From “The This Might Hurt Tarot Deck by Isabella Rotman @this_might_hurt https://www.thismighthurttarot.com Last week Danielle at @oakmoontarot did a year ahead and kind of life and project assessment reading for me. It was done with such curiosity and compassion, holding space for me word-vomiting at her and teasing out what my actual questions were for the cards. About halfway through the reading she pulled out her This Might Hurt and I really resonated with what came through the deck. It made me want to break mine out for this weekend. Unlike the RWS where the Two of Pentacles shows an almost playful person juggling their life, Rotman shows a face I empathize with when it comes to “keeping the balls in the air.” Yes, you have it, but giving ourselves permission for worry and stress is important. These feelings are valid, even if you have everything under control. One of the important lessons of this card is the notion of balance. Are the parts of your life in balance right now? Are you remembering to work *and* rest? Are you remembering yourself *and* the people or world around you? #CardOfTheDay #CardOfTheDay🔮 #Tarot #TarotCardOfTheDay #ThisMightHurt #Balance #ThisMightHurt #NewYear #Reminders https://www.instagram.com/p/CJe9UCpBw0d/?igshid=16tclcudg241r
The Cards: How I Practice Divination
I want to share about my experience using oracle and tarot cards in my personal practice. There’s so much I could write about tarot, but I’ve decided that for now I’ll stick with why I use the cards and how I use them.
Before I get into it, I’ll clarify a couple terms. What’s the difference between tarot and oracle? Basically structure. Tarot has a rigid system (78 cards, 22 major arcana, 4 suits of minor arcana = pentacles, wands, cups, swords), but oracle has no preset structure and can use whatever system their creators choose. I typically use tarot to tell it to me like it is and oracle when I need a comforting hug.
Why I Use Cards A few years ago, I started to develop an interest in tarot. I’m not sure what first attracted me to tarot... perhaps because it felt mystical, witchy, taboo. I began learning about tarot from watching YouTube videos like this Trainee Tarot Course from Kelly-Ann Madox. I would research tarot decks and stare at pictures of cards. Eventually, I purchased my first tarot deck, the Starchild Tarot, in 2018.
At first tarot was like a fun toy to play with whenever I wanted to feel witchy. However, as I began to study the cards systematically and read with them daily, I started to see the cards as a powerful tool for self-reflection and developed a practice to strengthen my intuition. Tarot has been and continues to be one of the most helpful tools in my spiritual development.
How I Use Cards At the beginning of each week, I do a 3 card tarot spread to get a sense of the upcoming week -- what the energy is like, potential obstacles, and any relevant advice. This helps me mentally frame the week ahead. Then I supplement throughout the rest of the week by doing a daily draw, where I draw either a tarot or oracle card to get a message for that specific day.
I have two additional oracle decks as apps on my phone (Crazy Sexy Love Notes and The Universe Has Your Back) so I can always pull a card when I’m out an about (or rather, when I used to be out and about pre-pandemic). Beyond that, I also use different tarot spreads for special occasions like the new moon, the full moon, any Sabbats, birthdays, and planning for the year ahead. I enjoy reading for my friends as well since it’s a great way to practice and get real time feedback. Plus, I think it’s a fun way to bond.
In general, I use tarot (and oracle) to check in with myself and the universe. I use my intuition to connect with the archetypes represented in the cards to ascertain a message to support my personal growth. I will often turn to the cards when I need help making a decision.
The best thing I’ve done for my card reading development has been to record each reading in a tarot journal (like the one pictured above). This has helped me deepen my understanding of the cards, build confidence as a reader, and identify themes or patterns in my readings.
I’m excited to see how my tarot relationship will continue to develop as I gain more experience. For now, I’m just enjoying the journey.
Thanks for reading! -wwa
