ARC Review of The Devil She Knows by Alexandria Bellefleur
Rating: 4/5 Heat Level: 3.25/5 Pub Date: October 21st
My review:
A fun, fast-paced but somehow QUITE existential romp, The Devil She Knows does a great job of balancing supernatural shenanigans with a charming romance between a demon and normie.
So, Samantha just got dumped when she tries to propose to her influencer girlfriend, and she would do *anything* to win her back.... which is how Daphne, a demon, finds her, sensing that desperation. You know the classic bargain: six wishes, in exchange for Sam's soul. And bonus, Sam happens to be the 1000th soul Daphne collects, meaning she's free from the devil! Easy-peasy, right?
Here's where the romance comes into play: Daphne likes Sam right off the bat. She's flirting HARD, and though Sam is inclined to treat this with suspicion (as she should lol), she is reluctantly attracted to this sharp-tongued, mischievous, enormously charming demon. Still, Sam is VERY fixated on winning her girlfriend back— she's a romantic and a people-pleaser whose wishes reflect the extent to which she is willing to bend over backwards to "win" her ex back. And despite this being single POV, you can clearly sense Daphne frustration, because Sam can do better! Possibly with her....
The sex:
I love a sex scene that launches with a "what if I don't want you to be nice?" and Daphne is down and READY to make that happen for Sam. It's desperate also takes place in an elevator (like a good chunk of this book does, lol). I will say there is only one sex scene, however.
Overall:
If you're looking for a quick romance read with the kind of supernatural that errs towards The Good Place (this hell has a bureaucracy too!) this is your book!
Thank you to Berkley and NetGalley for the advanced copy.
