Fandom: The Inspector Lynley Mysteries

Pairing: Barbara Havers/Thomas Lynley

She’s seen her boss go after different women at different times, although that is an unfair phrasing, really. He just happens to be lonely now and then, and who would not be, if they had lost their wife like this, so no one can begrudge him a little fun, and who knows, he might find someone to give his mother an heir after all –

The point is, it is none of her business, so Barbara always keeps away during those times. It never lasts long – two weeks, three weeks and he’ll suddenly be standing at her place with takeout again as if no time has passed, and she’ll let him in because she is weak and wants this, wants to spend as much time with him as he can until – until –

She tells herself that it is inevitable because it is. Seimone liken Thomas Lynley won’t stay alone. It’s a law of the universe that such things don’t happen. And Barbara… she’ll always be his friend. It will be enough. It has to be.

That’s what she thought five years, one year, two months ago.

And then eh started on her.

Or – no, that is unfair. It’s not like he suddenly began trying to seduce her in the middle of the squad room. She can just imagine what Winston would say to that.

But still – it’s –

He compliments her appearance now, never in a creepy or unsettling way, but genuinely, he smiles much more than he sued to, and when he does, his eyes always twinkle in that certain way, and last week, he even made her promise that she’ll accompany to Howenstowe for Christmas, although she was quick to add “If there’s no one else you’d rather take with, sir” but he only laughed –

She would be a fool not to see the signs, that is what it boils down to. She would be and she is not.

And so, she has to figure out what to do. Not that there are many options. It’s not – nothing will come of it, nothing ever does, not when it comes to home and things like that, and even if it did… she’s hardly wife material. So really, whatever happened would just drag on  for a bit and then turn into nothing, but a nothing that would haunt her for the rest of her life, so a nothing that she cannot afford, cannot allow.

But he won’t take no for an answer – but she’s being unfair again. She hasn’t even tried to tell him No, although she’s managed to create a bit of a barrier between them as of late, trying not to drop by his place so often or pretending she’s going out when he suggests coming to hers. Wriggling out of invitations to the pub, that sort of thing, although she always regrets it afterwards, and never does it two times in a row.

Still, he has noticed, of course he has because this is Thomas Lynley they are talking about.

The entire afternoon he’s been talking of some college dinner or another, the sort of thing he attends now and then out of nostalgia, really, and she has been ignoring hints that she should accompany him because what would that look like – everyone would think – God – she can’t just –

 “I don’t think it would be appropriate, sir” is what she finally settles on because it’s the best she can do, it’s the best anyone could do under these circumstances, but for some reason, it’s not enough this time.

Lynley looks at her, then sighs and gets up, coming to stand in front of her and she doesn’t know where to look because she just knows the truth will be there to be read on her face.

“Barbara, I – I like to think we are old enough to dela with this. I think I’ve made it rather clear where I stand. Just say what you want”. She doesn’t think she has ever heard him so defeated, not even after –

But she won’t go there, and who says he even means it like that, of course he doesn’t, what is she even thinking, of course it’s not –

But he’s looking at her in a way no man has ever looked at her before, and she knows this is it. He won’t ask again. She can simply deny that there is anything going on and they’ll always stay friends and colleagues and –

“You”. The word escapes her against her will. Oh god, she’s done it now, how can she possibly look him into the eyes ever again –

And then he kisses her sand all her worries fade away.

Almost all of them. naturally, this can’t last – but why should she not enjoy it for as long as she can?

Later, years later, she will watch him bounce their first grandchild on his knees and laugh about it.

I like The Inspector Lynley Mysteries because the two main characters go through changes together and clearly influence each other to be better people. They also had a romantic and sexual tension that permeated the whole series. Perfect.

Barbara Havers, the first eight volumes: Ugh, Lynley is so dumb and emotional and easy to manipulate by good looks and wealth. All these silly mistakes he makes will cost us the case!

Barbara Havers, in volume 9 (e.g. the one without Lynley): Ugh oh no, I fucked up! If only Lynley were here because he always knows what to do and he never fucks up ever!

Honestly, Havers, it's like we've been reading/living a completely different fictional universe, you and I.
