Nightshade: What is a painful truth your character has had to face? How did they handle it and/or did it change their behaviors going forward?

Constance did unwillingly cause the death of her mentor and the previous Captain of the Serenading Siren.
She did not handle it very well at all, especially with the slew of tragedies that followed with the death of her beloved Jack. His death resulted in her being named Captain, being betrayed by the previous first mate, and getting her thrown into Tol Dagor.
Tol Dagor did become an ugly, cruel blessing in disguise though, as it gave her a lot of time to think about Jack and his teachings. It matured her in a way and became very much a ‘coming of age’ for her as far as becoming a pirating captain goes. It hardened her. It wisened her. It opened up a plethora of other opportunities for her in the future as well.
