#Repost @goldenagepiracy ・・・ Libertalia or Libertatia, is the name of a legendary Pirate Republic, founded at the end of the 17th century, in a bay located on the north coast of the island of Madagascar, a territory that at that time had not been claimed by any colonial power. The founders were Captain Misson, a french nobleman, and by his lieutenant, the former dominican friar Caraccioli, a neapolitan very interested in the works of "The utopia of Thomas More", "The Republic of Plato" and "The city of the sun. "Therefore, Libertalia is founded according to the rules established by these three utopian societies. There was no private property, they were all equal without distinction of origin, creed, race or social condition. It was governed democratically, respecting the decisions made by a Council elected by all and renewed from time to time. They had their own language, made up of an amalgam of languages so that no one felt discriminated against or privileged. The insignia was a white flag with an embroidered slogan, "To Deo a Linerette", "For God and for Liberty." They captured ships, as they were still pirates, but they only took the essentials and released the captives. They were known as "the good pirates of the Indian ocean". The society lasted at least twenty years and disappeared when it was attacked by nearby towns. It appears that Caraccioli died there during the fighting, captain Misson escaped but died in a storm shortly after, and Thomas Tew managed to save himself and return to Rhode Island. "The La Rochelle Manuscript" is the only document that narrates the fall of Libertalia. Until now, the legend. Because the real problem with Libertalia is that it probably never existed. There is only one documented source and it is none other than the work of captain Charles Johnson and this is of doubtful credibility. The truth is that, although it is unreal, the idea of a man, a voice, a vote. Regardless of races or creeds, only freedom, is a beautiful example even today. #libertalia #legend #landoffreedom #thomastew #madagascar #utophia #piraterepublic #17thcentury #history #art #sketch #pirates #piracy #piratelife #indianocean #freedom #charlesjohnson https://www.instagram.com/p/CNI2FP8jR5s/?igshid=2gb97zq8qvpv
