Thomas's boyfriend, Minho, takes him to Korea to meet his family for the first time in their year-long relationship. Both work as professors in NYU, and from the years that they have known each other, Minho has met Thomas's parents and seen the content, typical bourgeois life that he leads. What Thomas doesn't know is that his humble and low-profile significant other belongs to one of the Top Ten Wealthiest Families in Asia and the sole heir to his family's fortune. In fact, they are going home for the most anticipated wedding in the country, a union of immense power, to be attended only by the most influential clans in the continent.
Thomas's perspective suddenly tilts sideways as he is thrust into a world of sparkle and luxury that he has only read in magazines and seen on televisions - where everything is emblazoned in gold and diamonds and jewels, and people have more money than they know how to spend. Where friends invite princes and princesses to their weddings or where mothers are hell-bent on driving middle-class Americans out of their sons' lives.
Thomas doesn't have the prestige, the name, the affluence, but he loves Minho. But can he keep holding on against the control and money of someone who will go to lengths to make sure Thomas doesn't tarnish their name? After all, sabotage is cheap for these crazy, rich Asians.

"Thomas, listen to me, when that clock hits zero, run."
Thomas is from District 12. His dad was an abusive drunk who died when he was young. His big brother, Stephen, looked after him and his mother, until a mine caved in and he died. His mother lost touch with reality and the respoinsibilty of looking after them fell on Thomas’ shoulder. He hunts in the woods and spends the day with his only friend, Chuck. But everything changed the day of the Reaping.
Every year, one kid from every District is selected as a tribute for the Hunger Games. Thomas dreads that day, knowing that in order to get enough food rations to keep them alive another year he had to sign up for the tessera. By now, his name would be in that glass bowl at least ten times.
It’s Chuck’s first time at the Reaping, and he’s scared. Thomas tries to reassure him, but his words fall on deaf ears as the Capitol representative draws the name and reads it. Chuck.
Before he knows what he’s doing, Thomas volunteers.
After that, there’s no going back.
He’s taken to the Capitol and give a few days of training to prepare for the Games. He meets the other tributes and they begin to forge alliances. The boy from District Four, Newt, has a soft spot for the boy from District Eleven, Alby. Alby and the boy from District Two, Minho, become friends quickly, but there’s no mistaking that Minho is a Career. Minho and Thomas get along well, but something has the Career feelign unsettled.
During a training session, Minho joins Thomas, leaning in close to whisper, "Thomas, listen to me, when that clock hits zero, run."
The next day, as he’s standing in the arena, Minho’s words return to him. He looks across the arena to see Minho and Alby bracing themselves to run into the fight and Newt catches his gaze, shakign his head.
The Games begin and it’s a massacre; Minho and Alby are lost among the slaughter.
Newt sprints to Thomas’ side, pulling him into the trees and running away from the other tributes. Minho, Alby, Gally and Frypan catch up with them, having gathered supplies and weapons for all of them.
But it’s not just them in the arena; there’s trackerjackers, mockingjays, Grievers, and metalic lizards called beetleblades.
Finally, it comes down to the six of them. The Gamemakers remind them that only one person comes out alive.
Before they have to make the dreaded decision, there’s a thundering boom as the roof of the arena caves in. They’re hit by the debris and knocked unconscious.
When Thomas wakes up, he discovers that all but one of them were rescued. All of them, but Minho.
Thomas, refusing to let the President Janson get away with what they’ve done, becomes the spark of the revolution as he fights to get Minho back. But Janson won’t give up that easily, and very soon the Capitol becomes the arena for the seventy-fifth Hunger Games.

Minho looked at Thomas, a serious expression on his face. “If I don’t see you on the other side,” he said in a sappy voice, “Remember that I love you.” Snickering at Thomas’s eye roll, he went through the doors and they closed.
