Welcome to overanalyzing fictional gay scenes w baemy 🙃🙃

I’ve had this past episode ‘Thorapy’ stuck in my head since the preview u saw last Thursday.

Sooo, let’s dig into Issac’s coming out arc, shall we?

Scene 1)

So here’s a full (enough) clip I could find of the beginning of this episode (after cold open)! And we can break it down now y’all xD

Interesting choice that this is one of the first things we hear about the new roomate stuff. Although it has been briefly mentioned before that Flower has been in poly relationships, she’s never really mentioned any of them being women (esp. since she’s basically associating roommates -> wives -> sex).

Ok I know that sounds a bit strange but stay with me here

Then righttt after this line Hetty claims how there is no one she can room with (only 2 other female ghosts), but since most of the pairing is based on cis & heteronormativety, Trevor recognizes how Issac doesn’t fit that mold and suggest he bunks with Hetty ,, cuz nothing will happen lmao

But since Flower just associated roughly roomates = wives/ppl married or dating = having sex, this is partially what Issac is probably thinking and rightfully confused why he would suggest such a thing w Hetty. They aren’t married, dating, or attracted to each other (at least Issac Definitely Isn’t) so he’s baffled by this proposition.

^also since he’s in the (invisible) closet, this feels like Trevor is outing him (emphasized even more by everyone’s lack of eye contact for the awkward moment)

Which leads to Trevor trying to correct himself and like Un-out Issac but also not fully propose anything inherently Straight (a hard line to fit)…..

So Trevor goes with “old-timey” which is a good way to sum up Isaac (and Hetty’s) mindset during this episode. Like despite them growing from character development so far, the whole roomate situation puts them right back in that uncomfy and restricting mindset.

Anywho, Hetty comments right after this and agrees with Trevor which helps emphasize the hmmm you could say “traditional values” of their times (tho like 100 years apart lmao, but still more upper class white Americans) with their “elevated status” (as u can see in the gif, Issac is looking kinda self-conscious, uncomfy, and trying to adjust himself to look better) and her comments just make this whole situation even more restricting.

Though I wonder why she says these things. We do often hear her say stuff that goes back to that traditional kind of mindset (typically regarding a woman’s place and expectations and such) so perhaps she still feels conditioned into this way of thinking and repeats the kinds of things she’s grown up hearing and believing (esp. When it comes to heteronormativity & gender roles)

^^although, if it is true about later in the episode of her sorta having unrequited feelings towards him, then maybe she’s like showing that attraction here with her comments about what they have in common (just feels weird tho cuz she isn’t shown to be attracted to him in any episode prior????)

So Issac tries to give into the situation and playfully joke about it, though he is uncomfy and even leaves like ,, right after this scene (I believe to go on his dat —I mean daily walks w/ Nigel). He clearly doesn’t like Trevor insinuating if he was gay, or should hookup w Hetty, or rly anything in this light (Like, he’s rly only made semi-subtle comments about guys he’s attracted to, but never really talked about it in a Legit Conversation). But hey, he’s still close to her and trying to act cool about it (for now lmao).

And she repeats the same kind of hetero stuff (even though it kind of seems like she’s talking herself into believing it too). Often she’s very confident and pushy about her beliefs, so it is interesting that she is avoiding eye contact and looking more unsure and around the room here, well sure she might be uncomfortable about the roomate situation (esp. cuz she apparently is attracted to Issac), but also she could be feeling trapped as well to perform more Hetero due to Trevor & now Issac’s comment.

The whole “natural urges” thing just feels kinda ,, insincere? And she does generally act more stiff and repressed most of this episode

Which leads to Issac in the next scene ….

Real quick, ik most shots start w the house but the first one & this are almost the identical angle !!! Hmmm (parallel potential 🤔🤔)

Anyhoo, we love visual storytelling xD

When they come back from their date they briefly look around at the room, almost to subconsciously scan if anyone else is there before they share another moment

Also !!! I love this second picture. Legit idek how many times I’ve watched this scene but I just noticed this !!

Ok so we see how they are both walking towards doors? And we SEEE how NIGEL is walking towards an OPEN DOOR (and if we know anything from frozen ,,, love is an open door jkjkjk but still yea lmao)

Showing how Nigel is more OPEN and OUT about his feelings & pursuit of Isaac and their relationship (esp. shown in this scene).

HowEVERRRR !!!!! ISSAC is walking towards a CLOSED DOOR (shown a lot more later as he backs up into the closet lmaooo) showing ofc how he is more CLOSED and GUARDED about being gay,,

Alsoooo the body language !!!!

I love how I feel like this episode plays with body language even more (or at least I feel like I notice it & the blocking/filming more in relation to issac’s story arc in the episode).

Emphasizes w/ the doors from the previous shot, (also the laughing & sharing that connection w someone u admire) it’s interesting to note how Although Nigel is looking at Isaac almost this entire shot, Isaac gets a bit more awkward and looks above and below him, avoiding more of the eye contact in this moment (once again more guarded) but alsooo the ARMS BEHIND OR BY THEIR SIDE!!!!

Okokok I know Isaac stands with his hands and arms behind his back ALoT so tbh when it also comes to contrasting these 2 characters, it’s a very clear way to show how Isaac is still like portraying this more ideal & confident version of himself & the idea he wants others to see. Versus Nigel seems a bit more comfortable w himself as his arms are by his side for the majority of this scene.

Imagine standing in a crowd, not knowing what all the commotion is about, and you look up, trying to see what's going on.  And then you see and your eyes meet and he looks at you like this...
