I had a friend once say I was like a rose without thorns,

soft, open, untouched by the sharpness of the world.

A rarity, she said.

But I’ve changed since then.

The petals learned to armor.

To survive, I had to grow them.

Not out of bitterness,

but because I was bleeding from wounds I didn’t cause.

Because softness without protection becomes prey.

Because beauty without boundary invites ruin.

I’m still the rose.

But now, I thorn.
