I doubt this shelf at the corner of the tobacco checkout aisle was intend for dumping unwanted items, but here one is: “I’m not gonna leave these beets on the floor—I’m not an animal!”
At this busy service station, the cashiers hang their coats on cabinet doors, because there’s nowhere else (at least not in the front of house) for them to place them.

Adding More Voices
Now that this project is its own entity, I want to incorporate more visions than my own. Everyday Design is accepting submissions! I cannot wait to see what you find.
You can also expect to see me re-blogging other ethnographically-minded folks on Tumblr. There’s a handful of people out there doing what I’m doing. Inspired directly by Jane Fulton Suri’s work, they’re posting the “thoughtless acts” they observe. Others post “workarounds.” These are often instances of co-opting.
Here’s what I hope to accomplish by sharing observations from you and others:
Post more regularly.
Increase the diversity of vision and subject matter.
Highlight others engaged in this quest for intuitive design.
Test Suri’s taxonomy of intuitive design (Adapting, Co-opting, Conforming, Exploiting, Reacting, Responding, and Signaling) by applying it to a larger body of work.
Invite and reflections on design cues prompted by intuitive designs.
I hope these changes bring more life to this lively project which aims to shed light on the signs of life all around us.
Some qualities and features prompt us to behave in particular ways.
