I watched Warhorse on stage in London theatre yesterday.
Video I took of Joey puppet during roll call
It was absolutely amazing!!!!
The puppetry was extremely well done, it was emotive (horse ear positions) and had alot of articulation to allow the legs to move, ears to swivel, and they even swished the tails. They were very detailed. Tbh, they were the reason I went to the theatre for Warhorse in the first place.
The two main horse puppets were Joey the brown (bay) horse and Topthorn the black horse.
They had other animal puppets as crows, swallows, and a goose. There were "background horses" aswell. They had two full horse puppets that had torn fabric and spine showing to depict overworked horses.
My favourite scenes were the tank puppetry, the horses pulling the weapon, and when Topthorn and Joey started fighting.
But it wasn't just the puppetry that was amazing, but the actors did wonderfully too. You were taken aback by the horrors of war, the loss of characters like the Captain Nicholls and David. It wasn't just a story of a man and his horse.
The sfx were great, the way they shut off lights after some explosions, had smoke for gas attacks, and the sound effects. I was Row A, so first row in front of the stage. It was so close, I felt I was part of the scenes.
I loved it, and I regret I could only take a quick video and picture during the roll call.
