Part 3: The Victor

Chapter 23. Still in the cave. Eating some stew. They learn that Thresh has died and it upsets Katniss. With only four "players" left, Peeta and Katniss vow to be more careful. The weather clears and they go hunting. Peeta accidentally hunts down Foxface.

Thoughts:

-- I don't think I have ever had lamb stew. Did I say this already? I have found multiple recipes for the Hunger Games lamb stew online. Are any of them good? Where do I even get lamb? (Apropos of nothing, my mom had a pet lamb growing up. His name was Fluffy and he got hit by a car. I don't think anyone had Fluffy stew.)

-- Peeta says that Haymitch, "He outsmarted the others" regarding how he thinks Haymitch won the games. We know he definitely outsmarted the Girl from 1. But I think Haymitch also outsmarted the Gamemakers, not just the contestants, and that's what Snow can't forgive.

-- Katniss says mentoring the "girl" from District 12 will be her job. I think that means the mentors are split on gender lines a lot of the time? But Mags mentored Finnick and Finnick mentored Annie. So I wonder how they decide whose turn it is if there are multiple victors.

-- The 74th Hunger Games goes for three weeks. I wonder if there is a "usual" length. It kind of reminds me of the Olympics. How they go for a couple weeks in the Summer (or Winter) and then you go back to not caring about gymnastics or track and field as a sport.

I think it's unfair (although these games are never fair) to have one person mentor two people. Because you're going to have to pick a favorite or someone who you think is more capable of winning, like Haymitch does with Katniss during this games. And then ultimately you will feel bad about that, and feel like you "killed" the one you didn't help the most.

Do all the mentors stay in this "Control Room"? It's not where the Gamemakers are, but it sounds similar to the setup the mentors had in TBOSAS.

I really do want to know what the Capitol sees. Some of the victors must be really awkward interviews. Like what if Wiress is your mentor?

Under the hood, I silently say good-bye to Thresh and thank him for my life. I promise to remember him and, if I can, do something to help his family and Rue’s, if I win.

Me to Katniss, since I know the future: Maybe to it quietly though.
