I had never heard of Savers, the thrift store chain, until yesterday when we were doing some shopping for my son in Nashua, NH. Of course, I looked online to see if they carried vinyl and the news was good. After hitting Staples and Best Buy for the necessaries, we piled into Savers, where I made a beeline for the corner of the massive store that said “BOOKS,” figuring the LP’s would be nearby. I was correct, but what I saw was a disheartening mess. The records were in a total jumble and, as I flipped through them, I got that vibe you get when you know you’re not going to find anything. There was a ton of private-press religious stuff, beat-to-hell classical LP’s from the 50s and 60s, and a few Olivia Newton-John records. But it bugged me to see these albums so Ill-treated, so I straightened them all up, re-sleeved a few things, and put the three nicest looking albums in the front. Now doesn’t that look more inviting?
