The True Beauty of Music

Why do I listen to music? This is a question that is usually quickly answered with a simple because “it’s fun” or “I really like it.” But in most cases there seems to be a deeper meaning as to why we listen to the tunes we like.

It is often something I think about a lot but just never really put into words. I ask myself why Music? Why not something useful like astrophysics, or practicing medicine? What is it about music that draws me to it? It’s a question that does not have a simple answer. For any of us.

I can start with my parents. My father was a big Motown fan, and always had The Temptations and The Four Tops playing. Mom introduced me to The Beatles and Bruce Springsteen among many others. I do not know which came first but both have had a huge impact on me. From there on out I have branched into other musical endeavours. Music, as I am sure it does for most people, really plays off my emotions. What you listen to is often effected by what you may be going through at that time. Whether it be a loss of a loved one or a bad break up, these situations will influence what you want to listen to. The words and sound really tug at your heart strings and this can often make you feel better about the situation or feel worse. For me it depends. I lost my mother a few years ago and there are certain songs that when they come on the floodgates just open. At other times they don’t. It has to do with the mood I am in at the time. And that is the beauty of music. It is a filter and a way to vent and channel your emotions without having to say anything. I’m not one who likes to talk about my problems, so if I listen to a certain song and begin to huff and buff or tears begin to flow, I feel a lot better afterwards. It doesn’t matter what you listen to. All music matters if it makes you feel something. That is the true beauty of music.
