This is an excellent end to a very good duology. It has the same good pace and excellent action and just the right amount of heart and humor while dealing out several hard blows.
I enjoyed the first book a bit more because that was more adventurous and on the edge of my toes. Alyssa is a good character but her recklessness was more irritating than fun in this book, but the book does well to point that out and force her to try and do better.
I would have liked I think dealing with Edgar and then dealing with the enkindler being two separate things or at least take a bit longer to handle. Honestly, I would have liked more of Edgar and I think he deserved more story time/attention. Not a different ending because I think it was a good one, but he's a fascinating character in his own right. And Alyssa's comment to him, "We always saw you, Edgar. We just couldn't reach you." could have been I think monumental for him if he had more time and presence. Edgar was such a huge part of book 1, it seems sad he was kind of overshadowed.
Same for the Solari extremist stuff, I think if we saw more of that and it having its own attention could have been good.
I loved that while Hell Monkey and Alyssa parted ways, it didn't mean it was over or their paths wouldn't come back together. And like I loved Charlie so much.
Definitely recommend!!!
Hello! You liked a post I made and I have been fangirling incessantly for... several minutes. Which, to be fair, happens frequently when the subject of Crown Chasers or Throne Breakers arises, but all the same, thank you for the sheer amount of joy your work has brought to my life. Even that time it made me cry in the middle of Sprouts. Just me and a nice heirloom tomato in the self-checkout lane, thoroughly undone by an audiobook. It was a moment indeed.
As this is an "Ask", there ought to be a question, so: is Setter autistic? I like to think he is :)
Oh my gosh, this is a message that made my whole week for sure. It means a whole hell of a lot that those books brought joy to you. I do apologize about the breakdown in Sprouts, though 😂
As far as Setter goes, I didn't deliberately write him as autistic (I just knew I loved writing him as this driven, serious, empathetic boy). That being said, I'm a firm believer in the power of the reader to bring their own perspectives and angles to a story in a way that makes it uniquely their experience. Which I suppose is a fancy way of saying I fully support your reading of him on the autism spectrum. 💜
I will say that he is canonically ace, and in my head, he and Sharva grow very close and end up in a sweet, slow burn relationship.
