Being a historian, I have a hard time finding historical AUs that manage to get their chosen period right. That’s why I decided to put together a list of recommendations of fics that did a very good job at emulating their historical setting.
Fic Recs - Favourite Historical Fics
1. The Legacy by eilonwy [25k words; Rated M; medieval Occitane/Southern France; Complete]
Facts: Time travel/Medieval Dramione set during the Albigensian Crusade (1208–1229) in Longuedoc (Occitane/Southern France).
Notes: Kudos for historical accuracy. Remix work of Labyrinth by Kate Mosse. Summary: When Draco finds himself partnered with Hermione Granger at work, he decides to make lemonade out of the obvious lemons and use the situation to impress his boss with his brilliance and expertise. Very suddenly, however, things take an unforeseen and dangerous turn, throwing their very lives into the balance.Written for Round 5 of the Dramione Couples Remix. My chosen, real-life couple were Raymond-Roger Trencavel and his wife, Agnes de Montpellier.

2. A Muggle-born Magic by musyc (@willhavetheirtrinkets) [50k words; Rated M; Regency-era; Complete]
Facts: Regency-era Magical AU set during the 1850s.
Notes: Exellent piece! Musyc does very well emulating period language and style.
Summary: Regency-era AU. Physician’s daughter Hermione Granger finds herself in need of a way to pay off her father’s debts after his death. Draco Malfoy, retired from the politics of the Isolationists, a group of pure-bloods bent on separating ‘true’ magic from lesser folk, finds himself in need of a tutor for his son, Scorpius, who appears to be incapable of magic and must learn to survive in a world without it. Draco also needs a wife and mother for Scorpius, to satisfy a promise to his unwell father. After she saves his son from an attack by Isolationists, Draco hires the Muggle-born Miss Granger for the former, and after a riot in Vauxhall Gardens and a scandalous discovery made by his mother, weds that selfsame Muggle-born for the latter. While making the best of her marriage of (in)convenience, Hermione discovers that Scorpius’ history of wild imaginings and dreams is more than just imagination. As she attempts to teach him about magical abilities no one expected he would ever have, she and Draco work together to raise Scorpius and learn to trust each other.

3. The Making of Draco Malfoy - Love, War, & Marzipan by bionically ( @bionicallywriting) [14k words; Rated G; Georgian era; Complete]
Facts: Historial Magical AU set during the Napoleonic wars.
Notes: Funny and fluffy with the right amount of (accurate) historical facts.
Summary: Meet the Honourable Mr. Draco Malfoy, rich, entitled, and bored, and the adventures that just might turn him into a reluctant hero. Regency England AU featuring the Napoleonic Wars.

4. The Captive’s Dream by elysium66 [17k words; Rated M; Complete]
Facts: WWW induced Magic Dream/19th century romance.
Notes: Not too many historical details but it works really well with its reimagined genre. Bonus: smut.
Summary: When Hermione agrees to try the Weasley Twin’s newly renovated Patented Daydream Charms, she doesn’t expect her irksome co-worker to join her on the adventure. Nor does she expect the impact of their sojourn to Regency Era England to bleed into reality.

Side note: I’ve curated an AO3 collection for Hermione-centric historical fics I enjoyed that includes other ships - in case you’re able to read Hermione with someone else than Draco ;) https://archiveofourown.org/collections/Through_All_Time

Through All Time- Prologue:Chapter 1 ~Meteor~
"What else is there to look forward to?"
He sighed as he turned back towards his house. A crash of thunder sounded in the distance as the door to his house creaked open. The bars clicked on their chains as the door slammed shut, then were slid back into their appropriate latches.
He flicked on his small old television, the screen slowly warming up and buzzing to life. Turning the halfway broken knob a few clicks, random bits of audio scattered across the room.
“My dear Antoinette, you can’t-”
“The body was discovered by a-”
“...missing, an eyebrow?”
“How COULD you, darling? I-”
Suddenly, his stomach grumbled over the chatter. Hoisting himself to his feet, he set off to make one of the only things he could afford- ramen, leaving the television on.
Setting the pot on the stove with a light clatter, he tossed the noodles in absentmindedly and wandered back to the television.
The previous broadcast had ended, now the television flickered with some sitcom. It was about a couple of relatively well-off teenagers facing their petty little breakups and such, complaining about how ‘horrible’ their lives were.
“Oh Zoey, how could he have dumped you? You’re the most popular girl at school!” The other girl looked up with puffy eyes, makeup smeared across her face.
“I don’t know, Mary! I did everything right!”
“Well, he’s stupid for leaving you. Let’s go get milkshakes.”
“Oh, just shut up... honestly...” he grumbled as he wandered back into the kitchen, the pot bubbling and smoking. He groaned, realizing that he had put the noodles in far too soon and now a soggy mush sat charring to the bottom of his pot.
I can’t throw this out, it’s the last package I have... he stared at his nearly vacant pantry with a sigh. He cracked his fridge open, taking inventory. Three eggs, maybe half a cup of milk, cheap lunch meat... I shouldn’t eat those yet. Ram-mush it is. He scraped the blob out of the pot into a bowl. Grabbing a fork, he prodded the mass. Well, it’s somewhat solid. He started choking down the glob, staring out the window. As the boy slipped his fingers between the window blinds, a faint beam of light shot down from the heavens and into the window. The light was soft and warm on his soggy skin, making him feel just a little better.
"Hmm... I guess I'll draw something. Maybe that'll give me a little pick-me-up." He pulled out a sheet of clean white paper and a charcoal pencil, tapping at his desk lightly. "What should I draw though?" another clap of thunder sounded off in the distance, reminding him of all the dismal people out on the streets. An idea clicked into his mind, causing him to crack a smile. Sketching with long, flowing strokes, he started on his piece. About an hour later, he had finished it, but he didn't feel any better. The sadness in the picture overflowed into the room, making it feel even colder than ever, but for some reason, the more he stared at it, the more he could feel a tiny hope rising in his chest, telling him to keep moving. He sighed, pushed himself away from the desk and lay down on his bed. The rain splashed harder against his window as he began to doze off, wishing more than ever for a friend.
As night fell, a large peal of thunder blasted in the distance, jolting him awake; he rubbed his eyes. The streetlight poured a yellowish glow into the room, sending long shadows into every corner. He gasped a little as his feet hit the icy floor, but he left them there as he stared into the blackness. Wandering down the hall, a sudden flash up in the sky startled him. He ran to the living room window, peering out the blinds. A glowing comet descended from the sky as he watched in awe. Throwing on his shoes, he hastily unbarred the door and slid out into the deluge of water. He took off in the direction of the meteor, which was a lot smaller than it looked from the distance. When he reached the open field of the local park, he stopped and stared at the sky. The rain splashed into his eyes, but up in the heavens was a tiny sliver of pitch black space which set itself apart from the rest of the dark grey sky. Judging from the trail of the meteor, it came from up there. Suddenly he noticed that the comet appeared to be heading straight for him with frightening speed. He screamed as it crashed into the grass, narrowly missing him as he leapt out of the way. He sat up slowly and approached cautiously. From the smoldering grass and through the smoke, he saw a man with spiky black hair, followed by a flowing bit that was tied back. The man was dressed in a simple blue shirt and jeans which he filled out rather well.
For about a minute the boy was completely dumbstruck, staring at the sky and then back at the man. The rain grew even heavier and he knew that he couldn't just leave this guy laying here. Another thought struck him: was the man even alive after his impact? His eyes widened with horror as he skidded down into the crater. He put his ear over the man's mouth, listening intently for a breath. After about a minute, he heard it, though it was shallow. He heaved a sigh, clawing at his scalp. His house was a solid ten minute walk at a fast pace, probably an hour dragging someone. He steeled himself and began tugging on the man's arms, slowly dragging him out of the ditch. Geez, he’s a lot heavier than he looks, he noted as he struggled out of the park and down the streets. The rain made it even harder to move in, mud sloshing everywhere. His legs began to cry for mercy, but he kept on moving. Even under the rain, he began to sweat profusely. As he kept on through the lightly flooding streets, he glanced at the man. Something about him was strangely familiar, but he couldn't put his finger on what. Just then, he stepped in a deep puddle and slipped, falling backside first into the muddy water that soaked him in grit and dirt. He groaned, but stood up and kept pulling. His legs ached terribly, but he forced himself to keep going. A sudden gale kicked up, making the process even more painful and blinding as it drove water down upon him. He tried to distract himself with a song, screaming over the rain.
♫ Close your tired eyes
Relax and then
Count from one to ten
and open them
All the heavy thoughts will try to weigh you down
But not this time
Way up in the air
You're finally free
And you can stay up there
Right next to me
All this gravity will try to pull you down,
But not this time
When the sun goes down and the lights burn out
Then it's time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are
Fill the darkest night with a brilliant light
'Cause its time for you to shine
Brighter than a shooting star
So shine no matter where you are... tonight
Wooooooah, wooooooah, wooooooah
Brighter than a shooting star
Shine no matter where you are...tonight♪
Even though he could barely see, though it was freezing and he hurt all over, this was probably the best time he had had in a long while, so much so that he couldn't stop from laughing out loud and grinning like an idiot. At last he arrived at his house and kicked open the door. He dropped the man in the middle of the kitchen floor, mostly because he didn't know what else to do with him. He let out a sigh, followed by a sneeze. Wiping the water from his face, he dried off the man and himself as well as he could. He yawned from exhaustion as he staggered back to his bed, wondering who the man was. As soon as his head hit the pillow, his mind went blank and he fell asleep.
