Summary:

The plan was this: return to Hogwarts, aim for eight O.s, move on with life.

But when McGonagall summons Hermione, her co-head Justin along with the other seven and eighth-year prefects for an extraordinary meeting ahead of term, she just knows the other shoe’s about to drop. And indeed: on the eve of September 1st, Hermione finds herself working to fit Draco Malfoy into her schedule.

Between Ginny (who has her own schemes), Justin (whose actions becomes odder by the day), and Mandy (whom Hermione never thought of as an enemy before), will Hermione manage to retain her sanity, whilst restoring some sense of normality for once— despite Malfoy being around, day in, day out?

Update schedule: pure chaos, but I'm aiming for weekly-ish.

Update schedule: Soon. I know, I know, I've missed several self-imposed deadlines already, but I'm getting there! PTSD is hard, even in a fic that's been generally light-hearted.

‘You have got to be kidding me,’ someone said in an unmistakable sneer.

Hermione whirled around, breath stuck in her throat.

‘Malfoy,’ she said, and it was equal parts surprise and acknowledgement.

‘Granger.’ His eyes seemed to almost gleam in the unnatural light of the exhibition spots. ‘I would ask you what you're doing here, but I'm not actually interested.’

‘Happy to disappoint you by merely existing.’ She huffed and turned back to the tapestry, fixing her focus resolutely back on the Hippogriff.

Draco made to stand next to her, but Hermione ignored him, instead angling her head to inspect another creature. There was a white bird and it almost seemed like it was dancing around the edges, even though it was perfectly still. Next to it was a wyvern, and next to that was a snake that looked like a… a basilisk.

She gasped.

To her left, Draco seemed to be shifting from one foot onto the other.

‘You’re better,’ he remarked stiffly.

‘Unfortunately for you. But there's always a next time, I suppose.’

The reason I believe Fitzwilliam Darcy has a huge dick is, not my preference (certainly not), but because at that time a smaller penis was preferred. A large cock, however, was frowned upon as something that would signify a more animalistic, less cultured man. And I just think it's fun to imagine that Darcy, this Paragon of Duty and Goodness, who has dedicated himself to keeping his nature under good regulation, has, at the end of the day, to deal with this massive appendage in his breeches that keeps reminding him of this other side of him.

I'm not sure non-Londoners realize how much of the city center has at this point been given over to "Harry Potter slop". It's truly staggering, and, as a trans person, maddening.

Like, America has its Disneylands, but the UK, through a sort of symbiotic cancerous fission between tourism and private businesses, has made the objectively far worse decision to turn a large portion of the historic city's most tourism-heavy areas into a sort of distributed Harry Potter Disneyland. I mean, the areas around Trafalgar Square etc have always been a bit of a theme park, but from my perspective it's got a lot worse over the past decade as people try to milk the brand for every last bit of nostalgia appeal, in absence of anything else semi-recent the UK is known for to foreign visitors.

These aren't official Harry Potter attractions, mind. That's why I'll call it slop, because it's all off-brand. You walk the five minutes from Charing Cross towards the West End, and every other shop will be something called "Magyk Emporium" or "Cabinet of Spells", branded with yellow on black text in a slightly-off Harry Potter font, selling a mixture of licensed Harry Potter merchandise, London souvenirs, and achingly mainstream-boring pop-culture merch from other fantasy series (think Game of Thrones merch that would have been tacky 10 years ago).

I cannot overemphasize how numerous these places are, and how utterly identical in form factor. It's like a sort of Harry Potter gothic, in that more seem to show up wherever you turn, all eerily slightly-off like they were generated by a copyright averse AI try to recreate Harry Potter brand materials without ever mentioning it by name. Hell, some of them probably were at this point!

And don't even talk to me about the half of the Kings Cross concourse that has been taken over by the Harry Potter photo-op tumor.

This is a problem elsewhere in the UK as well (I saw a couple of these in the touristy part of Cambridge recently), but naturally I imagine London has the worst of it. I never see people mention this phenomenon so I thought the Americans ought to know. The extent that the UK private sector is so shamelessly trying to milk the brand to foreigners is something I feel like is missed out of a lot of conversations about the series' continued relevance (or lack thereof).

I'm sorely annoyed we barely see anything technical. What's the points if the camera angles jump so quickly I can't see the finishing??

do fic readers know that their comments actually influence the course of the story sometimes? i don't mean in a "you need to write it this way because i say so 😡" type of comment, i mean when people are asking questions or really engaging with the plot and the themes in the comments they sometimes bring up things that i didn't even think of, or dig into parts of the story that i've overlooked, or get really interested/fixated on something i was going to just kind of glance over--and it has me going 'oh wait that's actually really interesting, that's a good point' and fully adding or tweaking or changing things about the story going forward. i'm literally adding an entire additional chapter to something right now because someone's comment had me like "oh i didn't dig into that as much as i could have." you have impact!
