Reading “Throwing Stars” now and I knew this moment was going to CRUSH ME!
Peeta in that moment thought he was “unloved” just as he mentions a chapter before when he’s in the train. It’s heartbreaking thinking Peeta thought he was worthless, he didn’t deserve love , he could be easily spared and sacrificed.
This chapter, the whole Gale’s whipping is super emotional (and not because of Gale being whipped, let’s be honest, so couldn’t care less, it is because the nightmare Peeta went through. Gale got physical scars but Peeta got emotional scars , which are far worse).
I know also this was a breaking moment for Katniss. She after the initial shocked moved all her attention in the books to Peeta (the storm and the phone call, she in the shower thinking about Peeta’s way with words and leading, the “stay with me” and pulling him to her bed). I a, not sure though what Peeta thought at that point, was it enough to make him believe Katniss cared about him? Or his self-esteem was so damaged at that point that he didn’t see it?
And more to end up the chapter. Here we have the word again: UNLOVED and UNLOVEABLE
(The Capitol had it easy to play with the insecurities of Peeta to hijack him.. my poor baby)
