Last night I shared a photo of a male lion who had been deposed from his position in his pride through a fight with another male. This photo is of some of the lionesses in that pride as their new dominant male takes his position. There are four extant species of hyenas. This one is a spotted hyena, and though usually most active at the night, I had the chance to observe him (or her) approach a watering hole, take a big drink, and then take an impromptu bath. Last photo I'll be sharing from Zimbabwe! For some reason, on this particular evening, a number of the hippos on the Zambezi River were providing displaying the iconic open mouth pose. It was so cool to see, and boy are the inside of hippos' mouths gross and cool. Their incisors and canines are oversized and grow continuously. They are used for combat, not to eat. Arbitrary Botswanan ungulates Friday part 3! Two male springbok lock horns in Chobe National Park. This behavior is part of rutting season (or mating season) for springboks. On Namibia's Skeleton Coast, I had the chance to visit the Cape Cross Seal Reserve. The Reserve is estimated to be home to 80,000 Cape Fur seals, the largest protected population of the species. The seals are loud and a bit smelly (a result of the oils their skin produces to allow them to spend so much time in the water). They also have big personalities and are excellent at both lazing in the sun and navigating the rough waters of Namibia's Atlantic Coast. Today was a long day of traveling from Namibia to Chobe National Park in Botswana. We paid our final visit to a Namibian grocery store, where we stocked up on supplies for our latest camp site.
