Last night I shared a photo of a male lion who had been deposed from his position in his pride through a fight with another male. This photo is of some of the lionesses in that pride as their new dominant male takes his position. There are four extant species of hyenas. This one is a spotted hyena, and though usually most active at the night, I had the chance to observe him (or her) approach a watering hole, take a big drink, and then take an impromptu bath. In Namibia's Etosha National Park, we had a chance to witness the aftermath of one of the brutal realities of nature. This male lion had been challenged by a rival for his position in the pride and lost. He was clearly injured and limped over to the water for a drink before limping off. Two ostriches browse on shrubs in Etosha National Park in Namibia. It's a myth that ostriches bury their heads in the sand to avoid detection (they either lay down flat on the ground or run away at speeds up to 45 mph). Some believe the myth was a misunderstanding of ostrich behavior.
