A once-in-a-lifetime shot — the moon perfectly framed by a rainbow. Caught at just the right time. 🌈 🌕
Sourcing the photos as taken by Mark Ham on Instagram, according to one of the replies.
Happy Pride month to the moon
The new sergeant-at-arms picked up his badge with care and saluted yet again. ‘Oath, sir,’ he said.
‘Oh, er, that thing? Er, I believe I’ve got it written down somewh—’
Vimes took a deep breath. This probably wasn’t a good idea, but he was flying now.
Night Watch by Terry Pratchett, pp. 115-116.
It is very important to note the total lack of swearing to obey the monarch (or any other ruler).
The Watch swears to uphold the law, serve the public trust, and defend the subjects of the kingdom, without fear, favour (bias) or thought of personal safety, to protect the innocent and pursue evildoers, to the point of dying in the course of duty.
It is, as Vimes observes privately later, a very sneaky and terrifyingly free to interpret oath.
Your tags about peppa made me laugh & reminded me of all the disney vhs tapes i watched in dutch as a child. The thing about children's tv and movies is you don't need to speak the language to know what's going on, so all that happens is you see it again 10 years later and say "why is the voice acting different?" or you get confused because everyone else knows knabbel and babbel as chip and dale.
(In reference to my recommendation that people who are forced to tolerate intolerable children’s programming can win some breathing space by insisting it’s only available in a different language.)
There’s a lot to be said for watching children’s TV in other languages – I know a lot of people who move to another country and are recommended to do so to level up their speaking! And I agree that it seems to seamlessly enter the child’s head without pausing for translation. But I was NOT expecting Knabbel and Babbel.
I am compelled to add my Asterix & Obelix story to this—arguably one of the OGs of this phenomenon
When my mother’s business vended at a mix of reenactments and conventions, she would order a stack of Asterix & Obelix comics to keep the family-member-dragged-along-and-bored-beyond-expression occupied while specific nerdery was enjoyed by the rest of the group. Without fail, this stack would attract every French Canadian within the marketplace. They’d excitedly bound up to it and look for the one they hadn’t read, but were immediately met with the fact “It’s in English?!?!” There would be mildly abashed eye contact, and a mutter of “We didn’t think anyone outside of French-speaking Canada knew about these. …they really make them in English though?” Without fail, another patron would come up behind them and remark “I actually read these in [Italian/German/Spanish/etc] when [my parents were stationed overseas/my grandparents brought them back from the old country/I was doing a research term at a foreign university/I went to a UN school/etc].” It was an experience to watch the French Canadians’ minds achieve galaxy state in real time.
Without fail, every Asterix & Obelix conversation would end with “AND THEY MADE ALL THE JOKES WORK IN EVERY TRANSLATION.” The contents of the stack would then be peaceably sorted through, gaps in personal libraries would be filled, a copy of a favorite would be obtained as a novelty *in English*.
(I did always wait for Esperanto to be included in this list of alternate translations, but no.)
Flatlay Friday of a core assortment of Strange Hour Atelier creations! At heart I am a printmaker, but I have so many ideas and there are so many mediums to render them in, it’s hard to choose. Always human made, or in the case of the Cursed Object Vending Machine: human curated and sourced. A reminder, or if you’re just joining us, Strange Hours is the home of the original Crows Before Bros, since 2017. Accept no substitutes.

i love explaining the etymology of the word "rickroll" because the story starts with "ok, so at one point 4chan applied a filter to everyone's posts that changed the word egg to duck"
Two weeks until the Ides of March!
Honestly, this is this webbed site on March 16th.
the 3 genders: friends, romans, and countrymen.
Ten of Swords and The Emperor reversed
Happy Ides of March to everybody, but especially the Senators.
Friends, mutuals, countrymen, do not scroll past;
I come to cancel Caesar, not to stan him.
The cringe posts that men make live after them;
The nuance oft interred with their bones;
So let it be with Caesar. The noble Brutus
Hath told you Caesar was problematic:
If it were so, it was a grievous fault,
And grievously hath Caesar answer’d it.
Here, under leave of Brutus and the rest–
For Brutus is an honourable man;
So are they all, all honourable men–
Come I to comment on Caesar’s call-out post.
He was my mutual, faithful and just to me:
But Brutus says he was problematic;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
He hath brought many hot takes to my dash
Whose notifs did the general discourse fill:
Did this in Caesar seem problematic?
When that anons have cried, Caesar hath wept:
Toxicity should be made of sterner stuff:
Yet Brutus says he was problematic;
And Brutus is an honourable man.
You all did see that on the Tumblr Blaze
I thrice presented him a kingly crown,
Which he did thrice refuse: was this problematic?
Yet Brutus says he was problematic;
And, sure, he is an honourable man.
I speak not to start discourse with Brutus,
But just to provide some context on his call-out post.
You all did stan him once, not without cause:
What cause withholds you then, to follow him?
opening tumblr in march and it's just like "huh. knife weather we're having."
