Using Straps for Recovery and Tie-down

Synthetic straps are ideal for recovery and tie-down. They’re lighter and often easier to use. Before using any strap, make sure you’ve got the right strap for the job at hand.

On another note, you just never know what skills you will need when out running errands. I had to stop at Lowes today to pick up some supplies for the house Hubby is building. One of the items was forty 2x2x8’s. The loading guys loaded the wood, but not tie it down.

It is amazing how Lowes hires people who try to get out of working, as in energy level 0! I guess I should have been paying better…

Animating Walks in Stop Motion

“Walking in real life has been called controlled falling by some analysts. We don’t consciously think about weight distribution and balance while we walk but these issues become glaringly evident in stop motion and gravity becomes a primary nemesis. So how do you keep the puppet from falling down? There are many inventive methods people have used over time. Some involved using electro magnetic plates under the table that are turned on and off to hold characters with metal feet.”

This is another thing I’m considering in my own animation, the use of magnets in stop-motion animation, as they can be very powerful and useful to hold our characters in awkward poses for a shot. Tine told us about how they would use industry grade magnets on the set of “Shaun the Sheep” and “Timmytime” which could tie down the characters to the sit in whatever position they were in, but this comes with obvious difficulties:

Magnets have a tendency to move objects you don’t want them to, or shift your characters or props out of place on set with only the slightest nudge. Also, any props or sets on stage that you want to stay static for an entire sequence should not have any magnetic metal material inside. 

The magnets we use are only small, but we must think about what sort of tie down we want during the creation of our puppets, as they need to have a metal piece implanted into the soles of their feet which the magnets underneath the stage can attract to, to fix them to the stage’s surface. Also, if we plan on using pins, we must use a drill to create tiny holes in the character’s feet (or wherever else they need to be tied down) so that we can push the needles/pins through them to fasten them to the stage.
