Laura Craig 20Hz-20kH (Imagined Noise) Video and Thread/VHS/Cassette Tape Installation The artist utilizes sound, recording chance conversations between strangers and videoing the noises of polystyrene balls falling on the ground. The recordings are then imputed into Sonic Visualiser, which converts the sound to Spectrogram images. The frequencies of the recordings are then measured and displayed as visual frequencies. When looking at the Spectrogram images, what do you hear?
“We usually think of the camera as an eye and the microphone as an ear, but all the senses exist simultaneously in our bodies” Bill Viola, Statement, 1985.
8000 (500) Cable Tie Structures
The cable tie structures are a mimic of nature laws, of how things grow and evolve over time, not perfect, too complicated to be symmetrical, but asymmetrical like the human form. Natural, biomorphic but completely restricted. The artist mimics nature by twisting the ties into unnatural shapes, using every day manmade objects. There is a contrast of extreme fragility in the piece contradicted with an aggressive appearance, chaos and order, geometric and the organic. A paradox.
