TOM BLYTH photographed by Myles Pettengill for Interview Magazine at TIFF (2025).
Tom Blyth tells Tim Roth how he made it from Nottingham to Hollywood
“Plainclothes” was shot for less than a million dollars in 18 or 19 days in Syracuse;
Regarding phones, he said, "I can't stand watching plays or films where there's people on their phones."
He's an Everton fan, and his father was an Everton fan. Living in New York, he stopped following anything, but now that he's back living in the UK, he'll be a fan again.
Tom wants acting to always be a challenge.
He has to audition fewer times now, but he's acquired the ability to understand when he reads a new script within 20 pages and say, "No, maybe it's for someone else." It could be a huge film or TV show, but it's not my thing".
Tom doesn't have an accent of his own; it's a hybrid of North American, South American, and British.
Wasteman is the most fun he's had so far. The dialect “really set me free,” it wasn’t his voice but South London dialect.
He said Dee's character is just a proper bounce-off-the-walls, high-energy coyote kind of animal character.
Claire Denis, director of “The Fence,” when she found out Tom was from Nottingham, said, “I want you to go Nottingham with it.” Claire loved that he was from Nottingham, and Tom thought he’d have an American accent in The Fence, but Denis wanted his Nottingham accent. “No, I want you to do a Nottingham accent.” He was like, “Shit, what does that even sound like now?” But it was fun.
He's never done a shot on film, but he has a movie he's fond of that he'll shoot next year if they get financing.
Tom's core childhood memory was going to the movies with his dad on the weekends, and they'd see up to four movies. Tom says, "The smell of popcorn in a movie theater is still my favorite smell."
The first movie he saw at the theater was Monsters, Inc., the first Monsters.
He'd like to work with Steve McQueen, but his North Stars are the Coen Brothers and Paul Thomas Anderson.
Tom is currently on a short break. He's feeling a bit burned out, although he's actually afraid to stop even for a month, but he's planning to travel a bit.
