Tiles panels (with religious motifs or not) on the facade of houses in the village of Estoi, in the Algarve region.
Some Portuguese tiles panels that don't have a religious theme. All these can be found in the fishing village of Santa Luzia, in the Algarve region.
In Portugal, especially in fishing villages and towns, it's quite common to put a tiles panel in the facade of houses with an image with some religious meaning. Albeit a touch kitsch, these panels have also an interesting meaning: it's a way of saying to some divine entiry to protect those who live in that house - ie, it's, essentially, an act of love.
Al these were photographed in Monte Gordo. From the top to the bottom: Queen Isabel The Saint, Sacred Heart of Jesus, Saint Anthony (with the Baby Jesus), Saint Joseph (also with the Baby Jesus), and La Virgen del Carmen (Our Lady of the Carmel) - the later one, in Spanish, something quite uncommon.
Tiles panels with religious themes are very common on the facade of houses in the fishing village of Fuzeta. Here are eight examples: Saint Joseph with the Baby Jesus (top two images), Our Lady of Fátima (with the Three Shepards, Francisco, Jacinta and Lúcia), Our Lady of Conception, The Holly Family, The Sacred Heart of Jesus, and The Sacred Heart of Mary (bottom two images).
Some tiles panels with Catholic themes: Jesus Sacred Heart, The Holy Family, Saint Joseph, Our Lady of Fátima, and Our Lady of the Martyrs (bottom two images). All these panels were photographed in the town of Castro Marim.
Castelo de Vide in tiles panels... from Castelo de Vide.
Five tiles panels with religious themes: the Holy Familiy (Jesus and his parents, Saint Joseph and Saint Mary), Saint Isabel (the Queen-Saint, wife of King Dinis of Portugal), Saint Joseph (with the Baby Jesus), Our Lady of Fátima, and Our Lady of Penha.
All these panels can be found decorating the facade of houses in Castelo de Vide.
Five tiles panels with religious themes: Jesus, Sãozinha de Alenquer (here called Saint Sãozinha), Our Lady of Fátima, Francisco Marto and Jacinta Marto (two of the shepard-vidents of Fátima), and Our Lady of Conception.
All these panels are from the surf/fishing town of Nazaré.
