“So that’s it then,” she muttered helplessly, wincing as she heard the slight strain within the cracking of her betrayed voice, “that’s really all I am to you.” He ran his hands through his hair and shrugged his broad shoulders, a defeated sigh flowing through his lips, “you’re my best friend.”
Her swollen lips parted then closed and she crossed her arms over her chest, “that’s it?” His hands dropped to his sides, silence filling the air before he uttered those two words, that felt like a dagger through the rib of her chest, “that’s it.”
