Devin Ratray and Tim Driscoll in “Nebraska” (2013), dir. Alexander Payne
Tim Driscoll just released a trailer for The Lengths. I worked as an Associate Producer on this film and provided most of the Grip & Electric gear for the shoot. Most of the project was shot in Pensacola, FL but there were scenes between Jacksonville, FL and New Mexico that were shot during a 30 day road trip shoot. I really enjoyed getting the opportunity to see Tim and his DP, Austin Smoak, work. They had a very clear vision of what they were looking to create and communicated it well to their crew. I learned a lot from watching Austin light and have gained a new appreciation for bouncing lights off of bounce cards and griffolyn. I've always tended to use hard, direct light for my films, but the soft light that wraps around the subject creates a much more natural feel that fit the script for the Lengths perfectly.
I also had a chance to hang out with Joshua Mikel who was an actor in our films at the FSU Film School. In real life Josh is a sweet artist/musician/completely nice guy, but on film he has the ability to transform himself dramatically and immerse himself in a character. In the Lengths, he plays a very flawed and sometimes despicable guy, but you can't help but kind of like him and his crooked smile regardless.
