The dead were said to appear asleep when they lay on their biers. 

Sylleblossoms and orchids surrounded her coffin, a profuse affair of white and fragrance whilst fluttery swaths of cloth suspended from the ceiling and draped to encompass her coffin like a lake of white that pooled silken. Inlaid was she, arms crossed over her abdomen with a bouquet of white roses, gentiana, and sylleblossoms that colored her where her still-smiling visage was ivory and ashen beneath the paints and feigned sleep. Swaddled in the wedding dress she would never wear, to be buried amid soil and rot and return to the earth from whence they all came. Where he would, too, when the tide came to tale and the prophecy devoured him into the darkness. 

At the foot of the bier did Noctis sit at the temple, at the high alter where the wake was to begin with the hour and mourners stream in like cinders after a fire. Like a child did Noctis sit loosely on the rise before the alter, clad in the suit of the groom, arms crossed on the balustrade where people would be paying their respects. Sobs would fill the space, of all but him. Noctis felt numbed, sapphire eyes staring blankly on her visage and listlessly waiting for her to open her eyes and rise from her sleep. A childish, foolish notion. 

But, he was not alone in his wretchedness, it seemed. Eyes narrowing, brows furrowing, he barely looked over his shoulder.
