At what point in history did we start using BC/AD for years? Like I assume they weren't ominously counting down in BC to an unknown point, but I also assume they didnt wake up and be like "this is year 1!" randomly at some point. Really curious about this for world creation around a nearly immortal character.

Story notes if interested- a young girl is brought into a city that is shared by 6 kingdoms in an effort to create peace. One kingdom is very anti-magic, while several of the kingdoms are inhabited by almost exclusively magic creatures. Anti-magic kingdom makes deals with kingdoms outside of the shared city to attack other kingdoms and attempt magic genocide. Young girl joins military and climbs ranks, becomes immortal in one fight and continues to fight war until it is done roughly 1500 years later when she is finally allowed to die.
