Chapter summary:

The whole Chain was shocked by the sight of them.

The rancher was covered in blood – his lower face, his chest, his arms. Time was draped across Twilight’s back, his arms dangling over the rancher’s shoulders with the rancher’s hands clutched tightly around Time’s thighs.

The Chain ends up in Clock Town on the eve of the Carnival of Time, with no sudden pressing crisis to deal with, they manage to convince Time to let them partake in the festivities. Time does his rounds, wary about his boys, but they seem to all be having some much needed R&R while Time keeps running into familiar faces. He could almost relax, even, if not for the echoing chuckle he keeps hearing...

"The face under the mask," he remembred. "Is that your true face?"

An incident in a dungeon kills Time- or they thought it did. Instead Time is split into two halves, a deity with Time's markings, and a red-eyed demon. The Chain attempt to figure out how to return Time to his true state while dealing with the newly dubbed 'Marked' and 'Shadow', one of which has a bad attitude and the other is somehow even more detached than Time's usual self. The Chain struggles without their leader but struggle emotionally with the loss of their father figure replaced by a demon and a deity.
