Thoughts and opinions on The Timeless Children? (If you happen to watch it some time ago.)
Err honestly (and you may hate me)?
Timeless Children is the worst episode of Doctor Who that’s ever been made.
Timeless Children is a complete logical fallacy that debases and ridicules 55~ years of history before it. It doesn’t make any sense whatsoever. From Chibnall’s viewpoint it serves to 'fix' Morbius (which didn't need fixing in the first place, by the way) but at its most basic level, we can understand that the Doctor has now become a god.
Don’t get me wrong, I enjoy a ‘the Doctor is super special’ narrative more than most, but to make him a literal god just doesn’t sit well with me. The beautiful thing about Doctor Who is this alien’s always been ... us. He’s a regular guy/gal born into a society he didn’t like, who stole a TARDIS and took everything he knew and turned his privileged knowledge into something positive. Along the way he’s been swept up in a few things which, to some people, does make him seem godlike. But he never invited that.
We’ve always known in our hearts that the Doctor’s a special person, but he’s never actually been special. For a 1000 years the Doctor’s been that one in the crowd who stands up and says ‘hey, this isn’t right’, and then does something about it. The Doctor’s been the one that in the middle of a firefight who rushes forward to save the person who’s just been attacked, even when the threat’s still there.
But apparently now he/she is a person who cannot actually be permanently killed. Asides from the rather obvious literal issue that causes (which Chibnall hadn’t acknowledged yet and probably never will) this makes his/her sacrifices from this point on almost baseless.
How many people have died to save him? How many people gave their lives? Even if the Doctor didn’t know he’s effectively immortal at the time, he does now, and 13 has the utter audacity to turn around and say ‘this won’t affect me’?
Also, it's made the Doctor as a character incredibly boring and unrelatable. A massive love of mine is the relationship between the Doctor and the Master, but the Doctor and the Master aren’t equals anymore. The Doctor has no equal. The Doctor’s effing god.
I’m not down with that.
