Story Origins

When I write fanfiction that features an original protagonist, I do it because I want that character to add something to the existing story, something that no canon character can bring to it. I like the feeling and the challenge that come with writing a story and a protagonist that fit into the gaps provided by the canonical material while said material remains unchanged, and I love having my lead character being able to affect canon characters without warping the established plot.

From the Sidelines is the only story where I have deviated a little from my personal don’t-mess-with-canon rule. That came about when I realised that the show had created glaring plot-holes that remained unaddressed to the end. Elena and Damon’s happy ending was the first of these — their relationship was acknowledged by both as being toxic and dysfunctional, and yet it was endgame and had a happily ever after despite their never being able to resolve their issues. The manner of Caroline's magical pregnancy was the second gaping plot-hole — the Gemini coven transferred the fetuses into her womb and cloaked them using a spell that was previously known to transfer a person to a prison world. The sudden change in purpose of the spell was never explained, and neither was an explanation given as to how a vampire’s womb could support fetuses without some kind of magical preparation.

Then came fantastical elements that would fit better into TVD book-realm than the TV series. Elements that gave a Harry-Potter-like feel to a supernatural show which for six seasons boasted no such vibes. The Phoenix Stone and its trapping vampire souls in it; the post-mortem preservation of the Everlastings' bodies; Rayna Cruz's blood that is poisonous to witches; the flesh-eating Sirens; the Founders’ Bell that opens a portal to Hell and summons hellfire.

All that made me realise that the inclusion of an original character could add something to the story, by means of purposeful interaction with canon characters and without altering events from the very outset. But it also drove home the fact that in order for that to happen, certain late divergence from the established canon would be necessary.
