I saw a picture of a chorus and orchestra at Carnegie Hall and all I could notice was the set of timpani on the side. @cadmium-ores and I had a good talk about me turning into a concerningly-overenthusiastic timpanist.

A day in the life of a Timpanist

Ini adalah project ke-2 says bersama komposer @anandasukarlan dalam rentang 10 tahun! Tahun 2010, saya ikut serta dalam pementasan perdana “Stanza Swara” di ITB, Bandung. Dan project kali ini mengangkat kisah “Saidjah dan Adinda” yg diangkat ke dalam movie opera. Sesuai alur ceritanya, ada agitasi dan ada melodramatic. Dalam visinya, ia membayangkan ketika salah satu tokoh yakni ayahnya Adinda mendapat hukuman cambuk dari pemerintahan penjajah Belanda, digambarkan melalui musik yang kejam, sadis dan sangat tidak mengindahkan nilai kemanusiaan. Maka dia minta saya pakai mallet yg paling keras. Saya ada mallet dengan ujung terbuat dari kayu. Tapi masih kurang garang dan amarah menurutnya. Maka saya balik mallet saya dan saya menggunakan pangkal mallet untuk menterjemahkan adegan penyambukan tsb. Cymbal yg dimainkan oleh sang komposer, adalah representasi dari cambuk itu sendiri ————- This is my second project with composer Ananda Sukarlan, in 10 years span! The 1st one in 2010 was a world premiere entitled “Stanza Swara” in Bandung. This one in 2020 is his interpretation to the old Indonesian literature work called “Saidjah and Adinda” it’s a melodramatic epic also with some violence as it happened during Dutch colonialism era. The music I play, according to the composer has to be agitating, full anger, unmerciful. So he asks me whether I have the hardest ever pair of mallets. I said, I’ve got these wooden tip mallets if you want. But those are not enough. So I use the butt-end of the mallets and that’s it. The sound of anger. With the composer on the cymbal representing the whip. #superduperthrowback Dalam perjalanan saya menuju Cloyd Duff Timpani Masterclass, saya menyempatkan diri ke Chicago, mengunjungi Maestro Robert Nordling, Music Director of the @bandungphil . Beliau menyempatkan diri mengajak saya pergi (padahal hari itu adalah wedding anniversary nya) untuk menyaksikan konser one of the best world orchestras ; @chicagosymphony . Disana saya berkenalan dengan Principal Timpani CSO, Mr. @dvhtimpani - he was so kind to show us around the backstage, the timpani room, and letting me play his set of gorgeous timpani. I was so nervous. Takut merusak.... Gila keren bgt timpaninya.... mantap.
