Titans- Which Can and Cannot Speak

I was inspired by this post, but figured I should make my own for my AU. lol

Whether a titan has the ability to speak mostly depends on where the breed sits on the evolutionary tree. The primordial and ancient titans are completely incapable of speech, whereas (naturally developed) recent breeds are fully capable of human speech.

Primordial Titans include the Founding Titan(the first ever breed) and the Attack Titan(it's direct descendant). While the founder is capable of commanding other titans, it does so by controlling their parasite, no language needed(the parasite doesn't understand human language anyway lol).

Ancient Titans include the Armored Titan and the Colossal Titan, both bred by the ancient Marleyans for war. The Colossal was later adopted by the royal family of Paradis for use in defense.

Middle Titans(more recent than ancient, but still older than modern society) include the Beast Titan, Jaw Titan, Cart Titan, and War Hammer Titan. Sitting further up on the branches of the Titan's evolutionary tree, these have evolved the ability to use/mimic human speech.

The only currently known Modern Titan is the Skinless Titan, but because it was bred from ancient and primordial breeds, it is incapable of human speech.

Do you think Eren will turn all pure titans back to human by the end of the story? Specifically all the colossal titans and the two titans that can’t move?

Currently those colossal titans are Paradis’s main line of defense, so any talk of them becoming anything other than weapons would require Paradis to first be completely safe from outside threat. If the rumbling succeeds and Eren is confident his island is protected, I’d think removing the titan curse and doing something with the remaining pure titans would be somewhere high up on his to do list.

If they can become human again at that point. We’ll see.

How can Pieck control her titan if her upper body is outside of it? Aren't they connected to their titans through their heads? Was it explained before and I just don't remember? I'm confused

It’s never been explained.  I think it’s an illustration convenience and not something we’re supposed to think too deeply about. Ymir did the same in chapter 48.

If Eren survives decapitation and regenerates like Zeke did, how will he do it? Will his severed head grow a new body or will his headless body grow a new head?

I wish I knew the answer. Very few people are worried that Eren is going to die so the real question this month is how is he going to pull himself back together. 

The most popular theory from this month’s poll is that Eren will do what Reiner did when he was nearly decapitated and transfer his consciousness to his spine and regrow a new head. The second most popular is that sand girl will get involved. Third is he’ll be healed by unspecified PATHS shenanigans. Fourth is something involving WHT power.

In this months podcast, we didn’t settle on any actual ideas for what’s going to happen next, but I really loved the suggestion from our guest Neetaku that perhaps because of the unique nature of the Founding Titan, and how it’s intended to be passed down a specific lineage, it can only be killed by being consumed. This could make sense because if the power was lost in any other way, it would go to a random child. The likelihood of that child being a Fritz would be remote. So perhaps a failsafe was built into that specific titan power to keep it from being randomly passed on.

I really hope next month’s chapter resolves this. I haven’t been so curious about what comes next in a long time.

So we know that Jean and Connie have seen Eren’s edgy head get launched like a tee ball, so that gave me a thought: if they see Eren degenerate, if he regenerates, will there just be a headless Eren body?? Or a bodiless Eren head that he’s gonna have to explain? Do human body parts of Titan shifters dissolve??

I’d like to think when a shifter dies their body decays like normal because that makes the most sense to me. Grisha’s death, however, casts some doubt on that. In chapter 62 we see his dismembered corpse, but in 71, the clearing where Shadis finds Eren was completely free of any remains, including clothing. 

It could be that Eren moved away from the body, but I feel like realistically Shadis would’ve looked for Grisha and if there had been any body parts or clothing he’d have discovered them. So who knows.

What we know about Eren is that the child in PATHS realm has sandcastled his body like she did with Zeke in 115. That’s why Zeke waited for so long. The process of rebuilding a titan shifters takes forever and an instant. Eren woke up when the child finished the process. 

While Zeke was getting sandcastled by OG Ymir, the mpreg titan was stuffing his physical form into it’s gut to assist in the physical regeneration as well. It would be really weird to me if Isayama does that again with Eren.

But if getting sandcastled in PATHS means a successful physical regeneration as well, then it will be interesting to see which portion of Eren spawns a new form. Since we know from Reiner that the consciousness can pass through the nervous system, it could go either way.

I’m really on the fence about what happens next. I’m just gonna anxiously wait for the next several chapters without making a lot of predictions.

Man, the idea of the mole titan is fucking great-would this mean, that the BT is the wild card of the titans? Since all the others have very specific appearances and abilities (what can slightly change depending on the shifter), but the beast can be literaly anyhing-like it could be some underwater beast(what still would be useless in most wars), or maybe, even fly..

That’s the hope. Or my hope. I feel like Isayama has had a lot of fun with titan designs so if he gets a chance to be creative with the Beast Titan he will. I also feel like Xaver’s backstory isn’t done so maybe we’ll see his titan form when we learn how he acquired the power. 

A favorite fandom theory is that Falco will become the flying titan. At this point I’d bet actual shingeki bucks that it’s going to happen. I initially didn’t want Falco to inherit a titan but since he’s a scream away from becoming a mindless one, it could be his salvation. 

The beast titan changing appearance based on the interest/personality of its holder would be so incredibly cool. It would also explain the horse titan in the Marleyan history of chapter 86

…and yes I think that horse is a titan, fight me. It’s been my pet theory for a very long time. It’s pictured standing on it’s own fissure of land like the other titans, but maybe like Xaver, it was useless in the fight :)

So the thing is... the only account we have that only Eldians transform when injected by the serum is by a marleyan soldier who was injecting ppl and was clearly brainwashed into blindly hating the Eldian marleyans. That is not an account we can trust. The marleyans clearly use the ppl in internment as cheap labour and military resource, they benefit greatly from propaganda. Until we see someone who is not eldian injected with the serum, we can’t say that nothing happens to them, its propaganda

It was interesting in chapter 110 that the Marleyan soldiers helping Zeke with the dispersion of spinal fluid were wearing masks. Of course this entire account is questionable now with what we know about the wine. And even if the story is true, the gas masks might have been used to protect the Marleyan soldiers from whatever dispersant was used.

Part of the reality that Kruger revealed to Grisha was that if the story of 2000 year of Eldian domination were true, there’d be no one remaining without some percent Eldian blood. Yet Kruger had previously talked about needing to fake his blood test in order to pass as a Marleyan. It’s confusing.

So I agree with your point. Since only a handful of people know the actual truth, there’s room for all sort of possibilities. I tend to believe that there is something unique to Eldians, but the story could prove that very wrong.
