The Overpass

a multi-level overpass over the San Bernardino freeway, in what used to be Pomona, CA. covered in tags and partly crumbling on the north side, this spot in zone 4 serves as the base of the category/community of killjoys known as overpass 'joys or overpass kids. it is fiercely guarded by killjoys who make camp in the shadows. dracs should steer clear of the area and any passerby's watch out for falling and/or thrown explosives, small grenades, and sniper fire. the overpass kids are territorial and hostile to anyone attempting to drive below, especially city vehicles. driving through or using the overpass will prove impossible as it has been fortified with scrap metal and the roads nearby booby trapped with barbed wire and long strips of nails to prevent anyone unwanted getting close.

Constellation Basin

constellation basin is a depression full of flowers in zone 6 that blooms in late spring. due to the basin being at the base of mountains, the late spring rain causes large swaths of flowers to bloom in the low area. the bloom of these flowers marks the end of spring and beginning of summer, and their rich blues, dark purples, and scattered yellow and orange spots bring to mind the constellations of clear and dark summer nights. the blooming of these flowers comes around the same time as spring celebrations come to an end and other flowers of the area go out of season. it is said the bigger constellation basin blooms, the kinder the summer weather will be, but not many in the zones are able to make it up to the area see the bloom for themselves.

she just found her mom. there’s some explaining to do.

to every question, she has an answer. it all feels like a fever dream. after all these years- she’s alive. she’s been alive. hiding in plain sight.

as time goes on, The Girl learns more. why her mom never looked for her? because she’d have to kill her- she was a drac with a directive to eliminate. she would have had to do her job.

why she was a drac in the first place? The Girl learned this one as they went through the back-room of Tommy’s for clothes. she took it up because it was the easiest. because it was, ironically, the safest. the lowest chance of getting killed by the city, higher chance of getting to find out information. in the zones, she’d only get killed if she got close- most don’t want to kill, but they do what they have to do to survive.

how poison had gotten the mask? all those years ago? how she didn’t die. she couldn’t. the rage that gave The Girl the bomb, gave her mother the strength- or, maybe that was the Witch. always messing with time and space. said her journey wasn’t done. at least now, she’s on god’s good side. from that time on, she’d been protected- the mask wouldn’t take her. underneath, she still remained herself.

she spent years watching. peering through the cracks on the sidelines. through claps, she saw her little girl had grown up. but she couldn’t let anyone know.

Poison would always have a suspicion, The Girl remembered. they would always wonder why the dracs would never touch her, but again, it could be anything. they could just know what the Fab Four knew. they could harbor enough conscience not to kill a kid. anything. but it always felt deeper. now she knows it always was.

through the years, The Girl is always learning. sixteen years of catching up to do doesn’t happen in an hour. rome wasn’t built in a day. neither was the border, which eventually, gets demolished, as do city ideals. 

as time goes on, Battery City doesn’t die, but the batteries do run out of juice. ideals grow old and underused. people get to their senses. things fall into place.

people become people just as The Girl grows up, becomes a woman, becomes strong, like her mother. and beyond this, beyond the Boom, her shadow lives on. so do four others, four others that walk beside her. another, wheels on alongside them, makes six. one last one always walks opposite her, on the side not occupied by her mother, who holds her hand so tight, The Girl knows she’ll never let go. the shadow besides her whispers words of wisdom in her ear. maybe it’s her conscience. maybe it’s someone else that starts with “c”.

and of course, the ultra v’s walk somewhere behind. they are a part of her story. they always will be. they add their five shadows, but they have their own destinies to fulfill. they have their own pin to pull, their own exploding to do.

so eight shadows walk along. they always will.
