I don’t know what it is about Ellie In a black and white filter but I do know I want her🧍🏽♀️
THE LAST OF US PART II
My thoughts and review of the controversial game:
After a long wait, the sequel to one of the most impressive and beloved games of the last decade is here and the response to it has been very mixed, between absolutely delighted fans and horribly disappointed players who find the game to be an affront to the original.
My review: It’s a fine game, but it forgets what made the original so great. The first The Last of Us game centered on Joel, a character who transports a young lady named Ellie across a post-apocalyptic United States, which has been decimated by a fungal infection.
By contrast, The Last Of Us Part II abandons these characters completely in favor of an ancient kingdom called “Drangleic” which seems to be more medieval in nature, though apocalyptic undertones still dominate the setting.
The new game has far fewer (and less dramatic) cutscenes, and focuses more on (extremely) difficult combat and an Action/RPG style gameplay where swords, not guns, are the order of the day. The new game also adds a new kind of boss fight, many of which are against armored ghost knights and monsters like this:
Now, a lot of the criticism hurled at the game is about how it abandons its main characters but I feel it’s important to judge a game based on what it is, not on what we expected, or what it isn’t. The Last of Us Part II has intense gameplay, a vast and strange world to explore, and far more creativity than the original where it mostly functioned as a zombie story.
The new game is still very much filled with zombies (Now called “Hollows”) but it goes so far beyond this original staple to present a whole world that must have changed over centuries from the first game’s fresh disaster zone.
Now, my own criticism would lie mostly in the game’s difficulty. Get used to seeing the “You Died” message over and over as you explore this difficult world, where many enemies can kill you in one shot, and perfect gameplay must be developed by trial and error. Each time you die, you’ll lose your currency (called “souls” in the new game) and won’t be able to level up. It’s quite frustrating when you make a lot of progress only to lose it all by dying a few times to the same, seemingly impossible enemy.
But still, the art design is jaw dropping-
And the level design is very impressive, at least in microcosm. On the whole this might’ve been served better by a more open world like that of Breath of the Wild, or that interconnected game from like 2011ish with the bonfires, with which The Last of Us Part II shares many game mechanics.
Additionally I want to mention that some reviewers seem to be put off by the game’s LGBT representation, which I think is absurd given the lack of dialogue to even hint at such topics within the game. I have no clue what game these people were playing but The Last of Us Part II is no more than a constant gory action game, where I might add you build your own main character (in another change from the first).
So all in all, I don’t see anything really wrong with the new sequel and doubt some of these reviewers even played the right game. Props to FromSoftware and Hidetaka Miyazaki for this new, different take on the original concept.
4.5/5, worthy sequel, would play again.
now i really wanna know how you would rate it. i dont think you do
“Ellie your mask... We can share mine.”
Dina will forever be known as that bitch.
I already liked Dina a lot from the start of the game but this is the moment when I fell in love with her character.
Ellie: Swear to me
Joel: Fuck
Ellie: No-
