hey so uhhh. kinda started thinking about oliver banks and wow he is suchhh an interesting character idk why more ppl aren’t talking about him?
I like that he’s not really as outwardly ‘evil’ as most of the other avatars we meet. he didn’t purposefully seek out The End, he doesn’t appear to take a lot of joy in feeding his patron the way they do (like the ‘statement’ jon gets from him in s5 being a literal coroner’s report— kind of showing how this is just a job to him, something that has to be done). in fact, oliver at first actually tries to use his abilities to help people avoid their fate, by warning them about their impending deaths— even though, of course, he eventually accepts that it’s something that they can never escape.
and I’m not trying to woobify him or whatever, he definitely did kill a lot of innocent people lol. I just think his demeanour/attitude towards his patron stands out from the other avatars, which makes sense because The End is a pretty unique fear (it’s the only one that will eventually, inevitably, ‘win’ over all the others, even after the eyepocalypse). I also LOVE the trope where personifications of Death are portrayed as morally neutral rather than straight-up villainous, and I feel like he really fits that.
also, he’s canonically hot and gay. just saying.

The Magnus Archives is a podcast distributed by Rusty Quill and is licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International Licence. This podcast is mainly about the 14 Fear Entities that feed on humanity's fear, in one way or another. The Entities are:
The Eye; fear of being watched, followed, having secrets revealed.
The Lonely; fear of being left out, forgotten, lost.
The Hunt; fear of being chased.
The Slaughter; fear of being killed, mainly for no reason.
The Flesh; fear of...many things, such as your appearance, cannibalism.
The Web; fear of manipulation, and spiders.
The Spiral; fear of losing it, going insane, etc.
The Stranger; fear of the unknown, could also be the fear of being replaced.
The Corruption; fear of being considered toxic, and of insects.
The Dark; fear of the dark.
The Desolation; fear of fire.
The Vast; fear of heights, big spaces, your insignificance in the vast, vast universe.
The Buried; claustrophobia, fear of being trapped in a narrow space, and being buried alive.
The End; fear of death, things ending.
In each statement starting from episode one, the Fears (one at a time) are prevalent. If you know these Fears, you'll be able to discern which statement is which.
Each fear overlaps; sometimes it's hard, or even impossible, to discern which is which. They bleed into each other, like the Buried with the End.
Roberte Smirke, an architect, studied these Fears and categorized them as we know it. He's mentioned a few times within the podcast.
There's this guy, Jurgen Leitner, who has books which essentially trap the essence(?) of a Fear Entity. He had a library, and his books are known by the inscription from the Library of Jurgen Leitner.
I'm not going to get into the main storyline. Spoilers, after all. I'm just going to let you know about the main characters:
Elias Bouchard; head of the Magnus Institute, London.
Jonathan Sims; head archivist of the Institute.
Timothy Stoker: archival assistant.
Sasha James; archival assistant.
Martin Blackwood; archival assistant.

Funny story about how I accidentally spoiled the biggest plot twist in The Magnus Archives for myself.
I was looking for tma fics, I think I was around the end of S2 or 10 episodes into S3?
You know how you choose the characters that you want to read fics about?
Yeah, that's how I found out who Jimmy Magma was before the big reveal...
I tried to gaslight myself into thinking I was wrong.
(It didn't work)
So every time he spoke after that and when he read those letters, I just sat there wondering if I could have figured out his real identity on my own.
(Compelling): Tell me, what spoilers did you come across, and how?
For some reason I’m absolutely convinced that Gertrude Robinson, sometime after loosing all her assistants, wears slippers full-time instead of normal shoes, but she has slippers that have something like crocs sport mode so she can run, climb and everything. Not sure if it’s just something she does to disarm people by making them think she’s just an old confused woman, or if she just likes them more than shoes.
Gerry tried to get her shoes many times, especially when they were traveling, but she refuses every time. She even managed to get him to wear them. He’s not at her level of trust in the slippers yet, but he does wear them inside the archives.
She makes it appear as if it’s now a rule that everyone who enters the archives has to wear slippers or nothing at all - especially no shoes that were outside! - and uses it as a petty rule against Elias and only Elias, he knows that’s bullshit but isn’t willing to call her out on it
Getting into arcane after a while of being basically only (active) in podcast fandoms is so fun at times
