Tennessee PTA Statement on School Closings
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: Tuesday, March 17, 2020
NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The following statement may be attributed to Tennessee Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Board of Directors, Kim Henderson President.
“With the spread of COVID-19 statewide following on the shadow of recent tornadoes in Middle Tennessee, we are supportive of Gov. Bill Lee’s action to protect students, educators and families by calling for an immediate closure of our public schools statewide.
With school closures it is critical that the Tennessee Legislature and the Tennessee Department of Education implement plans to ensure student’s’ and school staff needs are met during a school closure. Many Tennessee students rely on their school for a hot meal each day. Parents and families may not have the ability to supervise their students while not in school. Many families will experience changes in their schedule and financial status. Students and staff alike will be focused on the emergencies and may have emotional needs that need to be addressed in addition to their educational needs. School staff should not be required to use sick time or go unpaid while their school is closed.
Education while out of school must remain equitable and provide opportunities for all students. Many students are also without computer or internet access at home, and thus unable to participate in virtual learning. Students that require accommodations, including but not limited to special education students, will need special consideration. High school seniors also need to be considered as they need to complete their high school education in a timely manner to allow for continuing education options. Concerns about the required number of
school days and the possible extension of the school year need to be evaluated and should be discussed with the community before decisions are made.
Tennessee PTA is also concerned about the upcoming TNReady. The U.S. Department of Education has already released guidance stating it will consider waiving requirements for state-wide tests. Tennessee students and educators are dealing with increased stress and uncertainty following the devastating storms in Middle Tennessee and now a global health crisis. It is inappropriate to move forward with TNReady testing this year. The Tennessee Parent Teacher Association along with many other education associations is calling on the Lee administration and the Tennessee General Assembly to cancel all TNReady and other high-stakes testing for this school year.
The Tennessee Legislature and the Department of Education must continue to focus on the issues surrounding the health and well-being of students, educators and families in Tennessee during this crisis. They must act quickly to address these concerns and work to identify a solution to protect our students.
