Am I the only one hugely surprised they even had to address as some kind of true love thing between Neal & Emma? I dont get it or did I miss something?, I never got that vibe esp choices Neal had towards Emma. Can u make sense of it & the necklace?
Are you asking me if Neal and Emma were True Love or why the writers brought out the swan necklace?
Because the answer I would give to the first question is no they were not. The show never build up ST to be true love. In fact they never build it up at all. ST had two functions. 1) It gave Emma an angsty backstory. It explained why she had issues with romantic relationships. Of course it was no coincidence that we learnt of Emma’s romantic fears on the same episode she met Hook. The point was that she was wrong not to trust him, but Neal was the reason why she didn’t. 2) It served as obstacle for CS. By this I don’t mean that Emma was ever going to run off with Neal. I mean that he brought out the insecurities of both Emma and Hook. I wrote about this before, but again it’s not a coincidence if ST scenes this season were so many times used as an excuse to film Hook’s sad face. The reverse is not true. Neal was absent for most of the CS development.
The writers never developed the ST romance. They never told us about their first date, their first kiss etc. We never found out how they fell in love. That wasn’t deemed important enough to spend time on it. In the present ST served as a plot device for both Emma and CS development. Neal was not important on his own. I still don’t know much about him. We will never find out how he felt about Tamara’s betrayal beyond that last joke he made for example.
Neal and Emma were never meant to be a big TL couple. They were not written that way.
It would however make sense for Belle to believe they were. Belle obviously cares for Neal. He is the son of the man she loves. And Belle seems to like Emma. We can’t say the same thing about Hook. She never liked him. He did try to murder her twice and she believed his heart to be rotten. Most CSers take issues with that. I actually believe she was right at the time and I wrote about why last year, but it’s not relevant here. Point is that if Belle had to root for a ship it would be her step-son and the nice blond girl vs the nice blond girl and the most horrible man she has ever met. It makes sense from her character’s point of view to believe ST to be True Love.
This brings us to why they brought up the necklace? True is, I can’t be sure. There is more than one possibilities. 1) They may have wanted to give STers one last bit of happiness before killing half of their ship. 2) They may have done so in order to clue in the audience on the reason why Emma may start to wear the necklace again. Emma is notoriously sentimental. She keeps keepsakes of the people she cared about. She wears Graham’s shoelace around her wrist. I could see her hanging on to something of Henry’s father who died a hero to help them. He died her good friend. She would want to remember him somehow. 3) Because the necklace might come back as a symbol for Emma. Zelena likes symbols apparently and that swan represents a lot of things to Emma. It’s Neal’s death. It’s the loss of Henry. It’s her distrust of lovers. It would work as a symbol for her.
It could be any of these 3 possibilities which means we may never hear about necklace again or it might have a use for the plot.
But no ST is not TL if they were the writers would have spent time on developing them.
