been working on a nowhere-near-complete design of beast!ricky for an AU where he's an asshole wizard who's been cursed, and i like it so far, so have a sketch in case it disappears into my WIP folder for eons. it started out as a toa changeling AU design (because they're fun to make and it was bound to happen sooner or later), and then recently my furry monsterfucker ass decided to take it further and make it into its own thing. not least because toa changelings don't tend to have coats and beafte ricky needs to be Fluffy

it's been fun so far trying to translate things like his body type onto a different framework without losing the integrity of Him Shapes, and i'm both dreading and looking forward to doing the same for a fantasy setting version of his outfit. (i am so bad at outfit design. i am So Fucking Bad at it. but by god i'll do it for him)

tbh i also like badger snake strickler with an exploded snake primary model because it provides an interesting contrast to barb's LOUD snake lion with an exploded badger primary model. their primary houses are both... i'm not sure if 'burned' is the right word for both of them--barb's is for sure burnt as hell--but they're twisted in really interesting ways. they're loyalist primaries who've disconnected the actual wellbeing of the people they're loyal to in favor of feeling like they're living up to their primaries.

strickler is a badger who works toward the long-term good of one community--changelings--while also dehumanizing the hell out of them because that's what people are taught to think about changelings, including changelings themselves. and he can't do what he does with the humans, playacting at being a beloved and helpful citizen of his community because he can pretend for a little while that he's not working toward their deaths.

with humans it's all Good Fuzzy Community Feelings now; with changelings he has to ignore their pain, perpetuate their abuse, commit atrocities against them now, and he can't fucking handle it. so he shuts it off. he can work for 'the good of all changelings,' but he can't look individual changelings in the face and care or it will destroy him. he's a badger who's been so thoroughly broken as a person, who relies so utterly on cognitive dissonance to keep living, that he looks like an idealist--a horrifying one--and it fucks me up. it fucks me up so bad.

it's also what makes his arc in s1 so compelling to me, because it's the story of him being shoved out of the status quo and unbreaking. his horror and reluctance at realizing jim is the trollhunter, that he's going to be forced to dehumanize him; the nasty shock of both his lives crashing into each other in a way he can't cognitive-dissonance away any longer; the wakeup call of losing one of his communities after how he's treated them for so long because he taught them to dehumanize him too; the life-changing experience of having someone stand up for him by affirming his humanity for once... fuck, man. fuck.

barb i'll have to come back to in a reblog, i think. her sorting-related flaws are super interesting and complex as well, but they are... a whole lot more triggering for me than strickler's, so they're harder to write about. in the meantime have this because it kills the man

002- barbmura OR stricklander/angor rot

Barbmura

When I started shipping them: Some time between season 1 and season 2 airing.

My thoughts: I love Barbmura a lot, I wish it was more popular because I want more content of them. :^/ @im-the-king-of-the-ocean has a lot of really wonderful Barbmura fic that they’ve written which I still like to go back and revisit.

What makes me happy about them: WLW, human/changeling relationship, absolute tragedy in the making....

What makes me sad about them: Barely any canon interaction! The ToA writing team hates me personally.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Nothing in particular!

Things I look for in fanfic: The Angst. Both of them being morally grey is also My Jam.

My wishlist: Yandere!Nomura shit........ and Barb being really into it lol. Also fics where both of them are Jim’s bio parents.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Morgana and Claire for both, Stricklander for Nomura.

My happily ever after for them: Married and approximately 2,000 miles away from Stricklander.

Strickrot

When I started shipping them: The second they had a canon interaction.

My thoughts: Very fucked up, extremely underrated ship! Peak homoerotic antagonism! A lot of my favorite tropes rolled up into one.

What makes me happy about them: They hate each other so much.

What makes me sad about them: They hate each other so much.

Things done in fanfic that annoys me: Not enough fic of them for this to really qualify, but with rare exceptions I am not big into fluffy happy Strickrot. I like them because they’re yucky!

(Although again, Whirl has a really great AU for them that’s very Soft in a way that I actually really like.)

Things I look for in fanfic: Homoerotic antagonism!!! Toxic codependency!!!! Despising each other and everything the other stands for, but being unable to live without them!!!! Nasty and fucked up!!!!

My wishlist: C o n t e n t. Any fucked up content with them, please.

Who I’d be comfortable them ending up with, if not each other: Jim for both! I also like Stricklander with Nomura and/or Otto lot.

My happily ever after for them: No happy endings in this house!!!!

i'm starting to realize i have a thing for characters who are Bastards with at least one fundamental good, admirable principle at the core of their personality, which they've managed to corkscrew completely inside out in their pursuit of until they're making the world worse in exactly the ways they stood against initially. it is really unfortunate that the only fucking context this is ever deployed in, as an explicit, intentional theme of a work, is Baby-Eating Leftist tropes where the lesson is that trying to stop racism makes you racist and also an orphanage-bombing terrorist, because there's SO much interesting shit that comes of examining this kind of cognitive dissonance to figure out where the fuck it started.
