pairing; haechan x reader
genre; fluff, suggestive, childhood friends to lovers au
warnings; mentions of unprotected sex
The first thing that jolts you awake isn’t the numbing cold prickling your skin, nor is it the familiar sensation of having the duvet tugged away from your sound asleep body, no, it’s the abrupt animalistic snore in your ear.
You scramble into a sitting position, back resting against the headboard and legs tucked. Your heart lurches in your chest and you place your fist to it like that would do anything to calm its hammering. This paralysing fear only worsens the headache you’re currently experiencing. Cold sweat runs down your back as you face the person—or entity—that had just created that horrid sound.
With the strands of his soft hair falling into his eyes and his smooth golden skin illuminated by the fresh morning sunlight pouring through the blinds, Donghyuck looks beautiful, no, ethereal, nestled away beneath the covers. Your cheeks begin to grow warm. It’s unfair really, how nice he looks, peacefully asleep (besides the trail of spit dribbling from the corner of his mouth, that is). You can’t believe a sound that unholy came from someone who looks like that.
Your eyes dart warily across the interior of the room. Muted grey walls surround you, pictures of varying sizes hanging precariously from nails. A shelf lines the wall to your right, the first and second shelf packed with books of different kinds. Most of them, you recognise, are ones you have too. The college listed them as mandatory and you remember grumbling to Donghyuck about the ridiculous cost of them. On the right of the bookshelf sits a table, crowded with notebooks and eraser shavings. A laptop is half open on the table and there’s a single sticker beside the mouse pad. A familiar photo of you and Donghyuck from high school rests against the wall and past you smiles at you. You’ve been here before. Even though Hyuck just moved in with his best friend Mark last week, you’d been here twice, not including now. Since you’ve known Donghyuck, which was in like kindergarten, his room had somewhat become yours and vice-versa. You turn to face your childhood friend beside you.
Your heart rate begins to accelerate. Why are you in the same bed as Donghyuck? And where the fuck are his clothes?
You vigorously shake him awake, unable to hide your fret. “Hyuck!” He mumbles something in his sleep. “Hyuck! Wake up!”
Donghyuck groans, eyes squinted as they’re immediately greeted by the blinding sunlight flooding the room. He rubs the sleep out of his eyes with the back of his hand, propping himself up with an elbow.
His eyelids are still droopy and you frown. “Are you high?” Some stoner friend of Hyuck’s had come over last night and you wouldn’t be surprised if Donghyuck had taken a hit.
He shakes his head slowly, hair sticking out in all possible directions. “No, I’m just- I think I'm just hungover.” You visibly notice the way the early morning grogginess leaves him and is replaced with a feeling of bewilderment. “Why are you in my bed?” His head swivels to scan the room, face contorted into one of confusion. “How did we get here?”
You disregard his concerns, because both of you being half-naked is far more concerning. You decide to leave that mystery for later. “Hyuck, why are you naked?”
As if he’s just realised the fact, Donghyuck shields his bare chest from your eyes with his arms. “I’m not completely naked! I’ve, uhh,” he lifts the covers, peeking beneath them, “I have some shorts on.” You roll your eyes. That doesn’t help in the slightest. Donghyuck scoffs at your reaction.
The two of you stare at each other in silence, trying to process what’s going on and what on Earth happened yesterday. All you can recall from last night is showing up to Donghyuck’s party, the both of you immediately scurrying to the alcohol and downing anything you could get your hands on. Everything after that has now become one of Mother Nature’s greatest mysteries.
You try to come up with a logical explanation with all the evidence presented to you. You’re in bed in only an oversized shirt and your underwear with Hyuck, and he’s half-naked. You two had gotten absolutely thrashed last night and had no semblance of an idea as to what had happened. Did you two… No, you hadn’t… But, maybe you two—
“Did we have sex last night?”
You flush a deep red. You didn’t expect Donghyuck to bring it up so casually. You bite the flesh of your inner cheek. “I don’t remember. In fact, I don’t remember anything that happened last night.”
Donghyuck huffs. He flops back onto the bed, clasping his hands atop his toned stomach. You haven’t seen him so… exposed before. The last time you had was probably five years ago at your ex-boyfriend Jeno’s pool party. He’s definitely more well-built now, an ab-line beginning to reveal itself. Donghyuck’s cheeks seem to be adorning an adorable pink tint too. “Me neither.”
Seeing his nonchalance, your shoulders loosen considerably. You let your head fall back onto the headboard, stretching out your bare legs. The movement catches Donghyuck’s eye, but he swiftly averts his gaze, clearing his throat. “So, I guess we did.”
“Oh.” Donghyuck nods curtly. “Cool.”
“Yeah,” you pick at your nails, “cool.”
Donghyuck glances to the bedside drawer and then to the rubbish bin. “Did we, uhm, did we at least use protection?”
“Well, shit, I hope we did,” you fiddle with the edges of Hyuck’s covers, “I mean I really like you but I wouldn’t let you raw me the first time we have sex.” You can feel his intent stare, his eyes boring into you, making your skin crawl with unease. “But I’m on the pill, so I should be fine.” Hyuck still hasn’t let up, probably because his childhood friend of fifteen hears just confessed to him. “Follow me to the store to get a morning-after pill, okay?”
Donghyuck blinks. Once. Twice. “Oh, yeah, totally.” You’re praying he doesn’t bring up what you just said.
“You like me?”
Damn.
“Well, yeah.” You tack your gaze onto the ground.
Donghyuck, being the cheeky little bastard he is, shoves his face in your line of sight. He grins, planting both of his palms on your cheeks, forcing you to face him. “Say it again.”
Your face grows crimson. You feign ignorance, averting eye-contact. “Say what again?”
“Don’t act dumb,” Hyuck says, smiling coyly. “Say it again and look at me while you do.”
Your stomach twists, a sudden wave of bashfulness crashing into you. “Hyuck…”
His grin grows wider, a hint of amusement present. “Come on, baby. I won’t ask you again.”
Your face is a deathly shade of red now and the tips of your ears are burning. “I like you.”
Despite the fact that you are experiencing such a nerve wracking ordeal, the half-naked boy before you laughs. He’s delighted. “Say it again.” At your pout he giggles. “Please?”
“I like you. I like you. I like you. I like you, Lee Donghyuck.” You furrow your brows. “Happy now?”
Donghyuck has to stop himself from kissing you right there and then. “Very.”
“Now say it back.”
Instead, he satisfies his urge by pecking your forehead. “I like you too.”
“What the fuck are you guys doing?”
Both you and Donghyuck’s gazes immediately snap towards the door where a disgruntled Mark is leaning against the frame. Mark’s usually all bright smiles but right now, he looks disgruntled. He’s probably crazy hungover.
“I’ve only brought you in here half-an-hour ago Hyuck, and you can’t even keep it in your pants for that long?”
Donghyuck tilts his head in obvious befuddlement. “What do you mean half-an-hour ago?”
Mark scoffs. “I carried you in here? Half-an-hour ago? Because you were passed out on the floor? And I’m a super nice best friend?”
“So, I’ve only been in here for half-an-hour?”
Mark groans. “Are you still drunk? Yeah, I just said.”
“But why are we half-naked?
“You don’t remember?” Mark runs a hair through his disheveled hair, pushing his wire-framed glasses up his nose. “While we were cleaning up, you spilled a drink on yourself and puked on her, dude. Man, you must’ve been really drunk.”
“So then me and—”
“Anyway, can you guys keep it down? I’m trying to facetime my girlfriend.”
Donghyuck snorts. “Looking like that? You look like shit.”
Mark scowls. “Fuck off, asshole. I should’ve just left you on the floor, prick.”
As he storms away, Mark mutters a string of curses under his breath. You and Donghyuck sit in silence again, letting all that information which was unceremoniously relayed to you sink in.
“So, we didn’t fuck?”
“I guess not.”
Hyuck smiles slyly. “You want to right now?”
You reply by whacking him square in the face with a pillow as his laughter rings in your ears and Mark yells at you two to shut up.

The faces of thousands of strangers are mirrored on the airport’s epoxy flooring. Scattered chatter surrounds you, snippets of these people’s lives floating into your ears like a radio dipping into hundreds of different channels with every turn of the knob. You tighten your sweaty palm around the metal railing beside you. Your face is warbled on its steely curved surface.
The bustling of a fresh crowd catches your attention. People with an assortment of expressions emerge, dragging along pebbling suitcases or sagging backpacks. You can’t stop yourself from shooting up from your seat and sprinting across the space the moment you spot a familiar head of hair.
Mark looks up before you even yell his name—which you were fully intent on doing. A maroon beanie crowns his head and his tattered sneakers trudge across the floor. His undereyes are crescent moons of fatigue, yet when he spots you, charging at him like a bull, his smile rivals the Sun. Instead of reciprocating your vigour however, Mark remains rooted to his spot, only outstretching his arms in silent offering. At an airport, under these circumstances, that is a universal message. Your mind is stripped of every other thought that doesn’t revolve around the beaming boy before you.
It feels so inexplicably right: jumping into Mark’s arms. You’ve never done it before, but it was practically instinct. If this were a romcom, the camera would start to whirl around the two of you and the music would be amped up to 100. People would stop and ogle, strangers would coo and you’d share a passionate kiss right here, in front of dozens of others.
However, besides the embrace, there is no other extravagant romantic gesture. Just a delicate stroke of fondness. Once you pull away, Mark casts you that dorky smile you love. The one where he has his eyebrows subconsciously peaked and his teeth peeping through. You extend your hand to caress his face experimentally, like you’re unsure if he’s even real. But he is. Here is Mark Lee. In the flesh.
You relish in every bump of his skin, in the grazing stubble on his jaw, in the tightness of his cheek as it stretches into a smile.
“Wow,” is all you manage to breathe out. Your hand still hasn’t left Mark’s face which is warm, full and… real. “Wow,” you repeat.
Mark laughs. “You took the words right out of my mouth.”
“Sorry, I just,” you swallow, “I’m overwhelmed, I guess.”
“What?” He inches you closer to him. The security of his body is irresistible, and you’re melting deeper and deeper into him. “Do I not live up to your expectations?”
“No… you’re like… beautiful, Mark. Wow.”
The sight of taffy tinged cheeks has never appeared more ethereal. The heat emanating from them feels surreal. Mark is adorable when he’s flustered. You can’t believe you’ll be able to witness this for the rest of your life.
“God, you’re so cute. I could just kiss you.”
“Please do.” You nod your head unabashedly. “That’s all I’ve been thinking about this entire week.”
↳ Out on a day trip to the beach with your boyfriend and his friends, you’re anticipating a fun time filled with sunny memories and sand filled swimsuits. What you’re not expecting is the cold shoulder from your usually happy-go-lucky boyfriend, but you’re going to get to the root of this issue, even if it’ll kill you.

Perhaps you’re being delusional. Perhaps you’re just dehydrated or, maybe, you rationalise, the scalding rays of the evening Sun have burned not only your skin but your brain cells too (if there were any to begin with). Maybe all of this is just in your head and you’re overthinking it.
“Hey,” someone hisses, “is it just me or is Donghyuck giving you the cold shoulder?”
At the question, or rather observation, your head swivels an almost sharp 90 degrees to stare Yuta straight in the eyes. “So, it wasn’t just me thinking that!”
Yuta chuckles. “Yeah, he definitely seems off…” He peers at Donghyuck discreetly from beneath his sunglasses before turning back towards you. “Did you guys get into a fight or something?”
“A fight? No way!” You pause, suddenly doubting yourself. “At least, I don’t think so…”
Though you’re confident in your verdict of innocence regarding a fight, Yuta’s question prompts you to briefly run through the events of the day. To preface things, you, your boyfriend, Donghyuck, and a few of your friends—namely, Yuta, Jaehyun and Mark—had decided around half a month ago to clear up one day in advance for a ‘beach day’ this week. The idea had sprung after someone had brought up how nice and sunny the weather had been lately, and everyone just unanimously came to the conclusion that sunny weather equals beach day.
You had begun packing for this trip a few days ahead to the surprise of everyone including yourself, which is a testament to your overwhelming excitement, because you rarely--if ever--pack that early for just a single day trip. But who can blame you? This would be your first official trip with Donghyuck. No, you should rephrase that. This would be your first official trip with Donghyuck as your boyfriend. You’ve been on plenty of trips before when you two were just ‘friends’, but now--and maybe this is the romanticist in you which you’ve successfully kept stored away up until recently speaking--it just feels different. You’re sure someone out there can relate, because you’ve never been one to obsess over something as feeble as a label, yet this trip has had your stomach in knots for ages.
The packing process had gone smoothly--neither you nor Donghyuck had forgotten anything--and so had the car ride over. As far as you can recall, your day at the beach so far has gone without a hitch too. You’d had a little picnic, dipped in the oddly warm sea, played some beach volleyball (badly) and gotten some icecream afterward. No fights, no issues, no nothing.
Maybe, you think, he found out I was involved in that little switch up with the sea water. You don’t entertain the idea for too long though immediately casting it away, because you know Donghyuck would never be the type to get so upset over a prank.
So, why the attitude?
You gaze at Donghyuck’s back, hoping that this mystery might just unravel itself if you stare long enough.
“Huh…” Yuta’s voice tears you from your zealous staring competition with Donghyuck’s shoulders. “Then I wonder what’s up…”
You sigh. You know you should confront him and have a mature conversation about what’s bothering him, but that’s so much easier said than done. Maybe this is God’s way of punishing you for ridiculing all those scenes in cheesy teen flicks where the couple would experience a major fall-out because of poor communication. During said scenes, you’d be pulling your hair out, internally screaming at the couple to just freaking talk already, yet now that you’ve been presented this obstacle for you to overcome yourself, you’re erring on the side of caution.
Come on, you reason, I’ve been friends with Donghyuck for over half-a-decade and we’ve gotten into our fair share of arguments during those five years. What’s so different about now?
Yeah, you’re right. You find yourself agreeing with your own thoughts, physically nodding along like you’re speaking to someone. Yuta raises a concerned eyebrow at you. Nothing’s different compared to then. You’re doing it again. He’s just my boyfriend, and that’s just a label. Stop. Obsessing. Over. Labels.
Admittedly, it’s a bit embarrassing having to psyche yourself up to do this, but that’s not what’s important right now. What’s important is that little pep-talk, no matter how laughable it sounded, has gotten you to stand and saunter to Donghyuck with utmost confidence. In hindsight, you should’ve said something to Yuta beforehand instead of just springing from your seat and marching away. The thought hadn’t crossed your mind though, as it was obviously preoccupied with something arguably much more important than giving him the luxury of context.
You decide not to be too transparent about your feelings at first as you take a seat beside Donghyuck on the sand, leaning your head on his shoulder, hoping that all of this was really just your imagination getting the best of you. You silently plead that he’ll perhaps treat you like he normally would, giving you a little peck on the cheek or at least wrapping his arm around your waist. Unfortunately, your hopes are smothered just as quickly as they arise because Donghyuck doesn’t even bat an eye at you, continuing to chat with Jaehyun and flat-out ignoring your presence. Still optimistic for a reaction, you leave a chaste kiss to his bare shoulder, just to let him know that “Hey, I’m here!”, but to no avail. Infuriatingly, he doesn’t even flinch. All he does is drone on to Jaehyun about something you couldn’t care less about.
You huff. Audibly. A last ditch effort in vying for Donghyuck’s attention. It goes just as well as your previous attempts. You cross your arms, glaring at the side of Donghyuck’s stubborn little head, hoping to bore a deep hole through his brain. Maybe then he’ll finally take notice of you. Sensing the undeniable tensity in the air, Jaehyun clears his throat awkwardly, offering Donghyuck some lame excuse about needing to take a piss, before shuffling away. Well, at least someone knows how to take a hint.
With Jaehyun’s departure, you’re left alone with Donghyuck. Usually, he’d be leaping to drown you in affection the second you two had privacy--or even if you two didn’t, to be frank--but all he does now is fiddle with the strings of his swimming shorts absentmindedly.
“What’s wrong, Hyuck?” you finally ask, desperate to break this frustratingly suffocating silence. “Is something wrong?”
Finally, after what seems like centuries, Donghyuck acknowledges your existence, though the look he gives you is not a pleasant one. In fact, it’s one of agitation. His tongue prods at his inner cheek before he says, tone bitter, “I don’t know. Why don’t you tell me?”
Evidently taken aback, you crease your eyebrows at him. “I… Did I do something wrong, babe?”
“Oh, come on,” he scoffs, scornful amusement overtaking his normally amiable features. “Don’t pretend like you don’t know. You can just come out and say it.”
“Say what, Hyuck?”
“How much more you’re into Mark than into me,” Donghyuck says like it’s the most obvious thing in the world.
You can’t help but laugh, simply bewildered as to how on Earth he came to this conclusion. “I’m into who now?”
“Mark,” Donghyuck rolls his eyes, “don’t have to pretend like you’re surprised.”
“I’m not into--” you sigh, a smile of disbelief tugging at your lips. “Okay, tell me why you think I’m into Mark.”
“I don’t think. I know,” Donghyuck argues and you scoff, “but it’s obvious. And I have proof. Take when we were playing volleyball for instance. The whole time, you kept eyeing Mark up and laughing at his jokes. All of them. Even the weird ones that nobody gets.”
You snort. “Baby… I wasn’t ‘eyeing Mark up’, I was watching him just in case he missed the ball. And about the joke thing, to his credit, some of them were actually pretty funny! But, as for the the rest--and don’t tell Mark I said this--I felt kinda bad nobody else laughed at them, so I just laughed along with him. Trust me, I’ve been in his shoes before and it sucks. Not all of us are born as naturally as funny as you, Hyuck.” You’re a little remorseful that you’re essentially dissing Mark, but you’re sure he’d understand. Your relationship’s on the line here.
Donghyuck harrumphs, but you can tell by the slight quirk of his lip that he’s a little tickled by you poking fun at Mark and he’s totally been swayed by your compliment.
“Okay, fine that explains that, but how about when we went swimming just now? Why did you and Mark keep exchanging funny looks?”
“That?” You giggle. “You know how your drink was mysteriously replaced by seawater?”
“Yeah,” he trails off, his suspicion growing by the second.
“Who do you think that was?”
Donghyuck groans. “Wait, that was you? Seriously? That was mean, babe.”
“Aww, I know, Hyuck. I’m sorry,” you coo. Your hand inches its way closer to his as you attempt to intertwine your fingers together.
Donghyuck rejects your endeavour of fondness. “Nu-uh, no way. I’m not done with you yet.”
“Oh my God, Hyuck, there’s more?” you complain, though there’s a tint of amusement in your voice.
“Yes, there’s more, and you won’t be able to worm your way out of this one either,” he says smugly, as if it’d be a good thing if you in fact, couldn’t worm your way out of his next accusation. “How about when we went to get ice cream and you kept sliding up next to him?”
You pout. “I just wanted to try the watermelon popsicle he got.”
Donghyuck blinks at you, his once irritated expression dissolving. He seems dumbfounded as you hold his gaze, your mirthful smile never faltering. He turns away from you. “Oh, well… then whatever. I guess you aren’t into Mark.”
“Hyuck,” you say, hand crawling up his arm, “were you jealous?”
“Well, yeah, obviously,” he deadpans, still refusing to meet your gaze.
You giggle. “You’re cute when you’re angry.”
His cold facade is immediately abandoned at your teasing intonation, and just like that, your cheery Hyuck is back. “Baby,” he whines, readjusting himself so he’s facing you head-on, “don’t tease me. I couldn’t help but be jealous, you know?”
“And why is that?”
Donghyuck purses his lips. “Why? What do you mean why?” He gestures up and down, eyes sweeping over you. “Look how pretty you are! What am I supposed to do when you look this good all the time? It’s unfair, really, that you’re this pretty.”
A blistering heat, one that is much hotter than the Sun, gathers in your cheeks. “Oh really now, Hyuck?”
“Yes, really,” he says, genuity seeping into his every word. “Literally, everyday I’m surprised you’re even real.” You grin bashfully and Donghyuck pounds his fist to his chest dramatically like he’s been shot. “See! You’re only smiling and I’m already having heart palpitations at just twenty years old.”
“Okay, okay, Hyuck. You can stop hyping me up now,” you chuckle. You’re beyond glad that your boyfriend has returned to his spirited self, but you know you should address what just happened seriously, just in case. “But hey, I’m sorry that I made you feel that way. Looking back, it definitely could’ve been misinterpreted as flirting and I would never want you to have any reason to feel insecure about our relationship because you own my heart, Hyuck.”
“Aw, babe, you can be really cheesy when you want to be,” says Donghyuck, pinching your cheeks. He plays what you said off casually, but you know that deep down, it resonates with him, and he honestly appreciates your sincerity. “Come here, I need a hug.”
“Right now? There are people around, Hyuck.”
“But you look so good right now. I can’t resist.”
“I don’t know, Hyuck…” You smile demurely.
“Alright, then what about,” Donghyuck reaches to tuck your hair behind your ear, whispering, “we ditch the beach day and go cuddle in the car? My skin’s burning, anyway.”
You grin. “They’re gonna notice that we went missing, you know?”
“So?” Donghyuck challenges, leaning in to place a short but telling kiss on the juncture which connects your ear and your jaw. “Even better. I want them to know.”
↳ On an awfully planned trip with your best friend Mark, the place you end up spending the night in is not what you had in mind. Oh well, at least Mark’s there to keep you company. And apparently, he’s a pretty great kisser too.

Request 32: Mark + “I need a hug.” (42) + “Stop being so cute.” (67) + “Put me down!” (153) + “There’s only one bed...” (154) [F2L + Suggestive]
— 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝.
In hindsight, a trip with your best friend sounded like a more than sound idea. The two of you had combined what limited knowledge you had about general adulting, scrounged up most that you could considering your financial situations as two college kids, and, in essence, had made things worked.
Or at the very least, you think, eyes scanning the room, taking in the general gist of the next addition to your mountain of already existing issues, made things happen.
And to answer a question; yes, there is a significant difference between work and happen.
Mark sighs wearily. It’s most likely due to the ridiculously lengthy car ride the two of you had been subjected to just to get here (and the back-and-forth bickering over whose bright idea it was to decide to go on holiday when the travelling industry is at its peak—it had been Mark’s, by the way, something about promotions and discount prices) and the even more absurd hike—or as the cheery staff liked to call it—expedition to your room.
“I can’t believe you convinced me to take a trip to the middle of nowhere, Mark.”
“Excuse me, this is not ‘the middle of nowhere’. According to the website, this is a ‘refined establishment which offers a fresh look into life alongside Mother Nature’,” defends Mark, letting the duffel bag stuffed with clothing he has slung over his shoulder slip to the ground with not an ounce of care.
“Well, that’s marketing for you.” You roll your eyes. “Just admit, you screwed up.”
Mark scoffs, unwilling to admit his defeat. “Not my fault that you’re a city girl.”
“This has nothing to do with me being a ‘city girl’. And you say that like you’re not a city boy.” Mark is tempted to say something petty in response but bites back his words. “And we have a bigger problem at hand right now, Mark.”
“I wouldn’t say it’s a big problem…”
“Dude,” you deadpan. “It’s a big problem. There’s only one bed.”
Mark clicks his tongue. “We can come up with something… I, uh, I could sleep on the floor?”
“In this weather? You’ll be dead of hypothermia by morning. So, no.”
“Christ, alright then I guess we’ll just have to sleep on the same bed,” says Mark casually, falling onto the linen sheets. The bed creaks under his weight.
You shoot him an incredulous look. “Together? On the same bed?”
“Yeah, why not? We’ve done it before when we were kids.” Mark stares blankly up at the ceiling. “What’s so different about back then to now?”
You laugh wryly. “What’s different? We did it when we were kids, Mark. Kids.” Your face warms as you give Mark a once-over, taking it how much he’s grown into his good looks over the years. “I can list off plenty of things that have changed since we were literal children.”
Mark flips onto his side to face you head-on, an elbow propping him up. “Why? What’s wrong? You got a crush on me now?”
You roll your eyes, but your cheeks pool with even more blistering heat. “Ugh, as if.”
“Damn, alright then, Cher Horowitz,” jeers Mark.
You stick your tongue out at Mark. “Whatever. Pass me a pillow. I’ll take the floor.”
Mark jolts upright like a meerkat on the lookout. “What? No, you take the bed. I’ll take the floor.”
“No, I’m good. You can have the bed to yourself. I don’t mind, honestly.” You jerk your thumb towards yourself, pushing your chest out proudly. “This ‘city girl’ can handle a little bit of cold.”
There’s the muffled rustling of sheets and the padding of feet against the floor before a pair of arms coil themselves around your waist from behind you, which by the way, doesn’t help your cheeks which only grow hotter by the second. You turn to face Mark who stares at you with nothing but genuine concern.
“No way. This ‘city girl’ is taking the bed.” His arms curl tighter around you, pulling you even closer to him. “Come on. I’ll sleep on the floor.”
“No, Mark it’s—”
Your refusal is cut short when you feel your body grow weightless as your feet are lifted off of the ground.
“Oh my God! Holy shit, Mark.” Like a hapless ragdoll, you’re almost effortlessly thrown over Mark’s shoulder. You’d be impressed by how surprisingly strong he is given his skinny-looking exterior, but you find that this isn’t quite the right time to be complimenting his physical abilities just yet. Mark grunts when you writhe in his hold. “Put me down!”
“With pleasure.”
You yelp, startled when Mark nonchalantly drops you onto the bed, following suit not too long after, his face inches from yours. His arms cage in your face and you feel your head grow dizzy, intoxicated by his scent. Your heart lurches when the bed groans with all the brute force being heaved onto it.
Mark grins cheekily at you, an airy laugh leaving his lips. “Jesus, you should’ve seen your face! It was priceless.”
You stare up at him, subconsciously drinking in his beautiful features; from the hairs of his eyebrows to the flutter of his eyelashes to the rosy apples of his cheeks and right down to the dip of his cupid’s bow, you gawk at him in silence for a moment or two. You realise that it’s actually been a moment or two too long since you’ve said something by the way Mark’s smile falters and his eyes begin to roam your face with just as much intrigue.
You clear your throat, averting his keen gaze. “Yeah, alright. Haha, very funny, Mark.”
For once, Mark doesn’t have any witty comeback for you in response. In fact, the room is drop dead silent save for the mechanical whirring of the ceiling fan. Mark’s adam’s apple bobs up and down in apprehension as his eyes scan your face once more. You can’t look away from him. Your eyes are glued to his as your heart hammers in your chest, its vibrations ringing in your ears.
He makes a move to get off of you but freezes when he feels your hand wrap around his bicep, urging for him to stay as he is. Mark watches you with interest, waiting for something more, but all you can do is continue gaping at him. You pull your bottom lip between your teeth, blinking up at him. You wait with baited breath as Mark licks his lips.
“What?” he whispers. “What is it you want from me?”
You inhale sharply.
Mark’s voice drops several octaves, turning almost gravelly, which is so out of character for him you nearly blanch. “Come on, I want to know. Tell me what you want me to do to you.”
You mumble your words incoherently, your mind too clouded over to formulate an actual sentence.
“Speak up, pretty girl. I can’t hear you.” Mark leans into your ear, his hot breath making your hairs stand on end.
“Want you to kiss me, Mark.”
“God, you’re so cute. Stop being so cute. Say it again.”
You huff, growing impatient. “Please, Mark. Just kiss me already.”
“Holy shit.” He tucks a strand of your hair behind your ear. “That's really hot.”
Mark kisses you tenderly. His lips press softly against yours, testing the waters and gauging your reaction. He tastes of the spearmint gum you gave him on the ride here and he smells like the fabric softener you always use when you go over to his place.
His hand cups your cheek, and at your hum of appreciation, he finally decides to kiss you with a little more fervour.
You’re not sure how, but you soon find yourself in Mark’s lap as he rests his back against the headboard. You chase after his lips when he pulls away and he giggles, the sound so bizarre considering the atmosphere. You don’t stay displeased for too long though, as Mark begins kissing down your jaw, which tickles, if you're being frank.
Mark’s grip on you turns bruising when you scratch at his nape, savouring the way his breath hitches. As things progress, you can’t help but wonder how this exactly happened. Sure, you’ve had those moments where the idea of being more than friends with Mark excited you, but it’s not like you dwelled on the thought often. All throughout your friendship, you’d never had any moments like this, but you’re surprised you two hadn’t done this sooner, because God, this feels amazing. Thinking back on it, there have been moments where you’d caught Mark staring a little too intensely at you and vice-versa, but you brushed it off as a common occurrence, being friends with a guy. But, you suppose, given the fact that you and Mark are making out right now, probably means that those stares meant a little more than you had first surmised.
You pull away when Mark grips the back of your neck. He pauses, his gaze finding yours.
He swallows dryly. “You okay?"
You exhale shakily, a whirlwind of thoughts consuming you. “Wait- I- Can we,” you take a breath, “can we stop?”
Immediately, Mark’s expression melts into one of distress. “Yeah, of course we can.”
“Thanks.” You nod timidly, climbing off his lap and sinking into the spot beside him. You chew on the flesh of your inner cheek, guilt washing over you. “I- I’m sorry.”
Mark’s head swivels to face you. “What? No, don’t be sorry. It’s fine.” He fiddles with his fingers. “Are you okay? Did I do something wrong? I didn’t hurt you did I?”
“What? No, no, you didn’t.” You laugh reassuringly. “I just- I don’t know- I just—”
“No, it’s okay. If you want to stop, I'll stop. No explanation required.” Mark smiles at you. “But… we’re still cool, right?”
“Of course we are, dude.”
Mark snickers. “Wow, I can’t believe you just called me dude after we made out. You’re really something else, huh?”
“Hey! You should take that as a compliment.” You shove him playfully. “I don’t call just anyone dude.”
“Well then, it’s an honour. Dude.”
Your conversation dwindles into silence. You feel anxiety begin to make its way up your spine as it latches onto you, sinking its gnarly teeth into your back. What now? Can you two really go back to being just friends if that’s what you ultimately decided? The faint spinning of the fan is the only thing that nulls your worries. Cautiously, you reach for Mark’s hand beside you and thankfully, he reciprocates the gesture. You sigh happily, finding solace in the warmth radiating from his fingertips.
“Can I—no I mean—can we cuddle?” You await a response from Mark, only to be greeted by nothing. “Uh, I’m sorry. That was dumb of me. Pretend I didn’t say anything.”
You attempt to pry your fingers from Mark’s but he refuses to let you slip away. Instead, he brings your hand to his lips, placing a chaste kiss on the back of your palm. “Hey, no. Let’s cuddle. I’m down for that. I need a hug, anyway.”
It’s astounding how easy it is to get into a spooning position with Mark. And as corny as it sounds, you feel like you fit perfectly in his arms, snug against his chest. You allow yourself to relax in his embrace until you feel something digging into your thigh.
“Is that—”
“Yeah, sorry,” says Mark sheepishly. He shifts in his position, but to no avail. He just hisses in discomfort. You smother a giggle. “I’m still, uh, a little… excited?”
“My bad.”
Mark pokes your waist, fishing that repressed giggle out of you. “Dumbass.”
And as you lay there with Mark, your laughter fading as the moon rises, you can’t deny the sparks of attraction that have ignited. You’re not quite sure exactly how you feel, but you think, whatever the outcome, the two of you will be alright.

— 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝.
Your fortnightly movie nights are always something you anticipate eagerly, no matter how frequent or repetitive they may be. It’s always nice being able to take a breather from the grievous monotony of your daily schedule to just kick back and—essentially—do nothing. You know the rest of the members cherish these ephemeral moments too, because despite all odds, they’ll valiantly try to show up and join you, or at the very least make an appearance. Once, Ten had even barged in, still with his extensions intact.
To be fair, you’re not any better. When you heard that Jaehyun was participating the other day, you had dropped all other priorities just to come over. Safe to say, your roommate was not pleased seeing the state of the abandoned living room.
Your vision sweeps the perimeter of the room. Usually, it’s packed to full capacity, but there are only four others here besides you today.
“The glasses.” Doyoung purses his lips, planting his stare on a startled Jungwoo. “Where are the glasses? I thought I told you to get them?”
Jungwoo smacks a hand to his mouth, the sound of skin against skin so loud that you wince on his behalf. “It totally slipped my mind. Honest to God. I got sidetracked.” He clasps your—an innocent bystander’s—shoulder with such force that you physically jolt forward. Jungwoo flashes you his signature million dollar smile.“Hey, could you be a dear and help me out? I still haven’t decided what movie we should watch tonight.”
“Yeah, sure.” You grimace, already turning on your heel, mumbling, “You didn’t have to hit me.”
“Thanks!” he calls after you. “And sorry!”
His voice cuts through the hurried chattering between Jaehyun and Johnny which comes into earshot as you step into the kitchen. Their mouths move at the speed of bullet trains and Jaehyun’s hands flutter around his pensive face frantically. Maybe it’s the rose-tinted lenses, but the sight endears you. The slightest of chuckles escapes your lips at his delirium.
Their bodies seize, their zealous conversation slipping into a steady silence.
“What’s wrong?” you smirk. “Were you guys talking about me?”
“No,” Jaehyun snaps, so quickly that it almost prickles. “Why would we be talking about you?”
“Ouch,” you pout, masquerading the sting with a frivolous cadence . “How mean.”
“I’m sorry, I didn’t mean it like that,” he says. “What are you doing here? I thought you were, uh, clearing the table?” There’s a nervous edge to Jaehyun’s voice which insinuates that he knows something you don’t.
“I was, but then Jungwoo asked me to get the glasses in his stead since he’s too busy fussing over which movie we should watch.”
Johnny laughs. “I should go help him out then, or he’ll be stuck on the selection page for ages.” He pats Jaehyun’s back as he leaves. “Don’t make a fool of yourself.”
You toss an inquisitive glance at Jaehyun. He turns away, cheeks blooming with colour.
Admittedly, you’re more than intrigued by what Jaehyun had been so ardently conversing about. A small part of you whispers the possibility of it being you, and your heart soars. Now you’re the one getting sidetracked. Of course, you are. This is one of the rare moments you and Jaehyun have shared alone. Although you see him almost daily, there’s always someone closeby; a fellow staff or member of the group. And while you’d consider yourself someone who thrives in social situations, there’s nothing more you desire than a few seconds in solitude with the charming man.
You swing the plywood cupboard door open, extinguishing your idle delusions, the handle cool in your grasp. Three shelves greet your vision; each stuffed full with either miscellaneous tableware or seldom used kitchen utensils. You spot the mug you gave Mark for his birthday collecting dust in the corner and scoff bitterly. And he said it’s his ‘favourite mug’.
Your face screws in bewilderment. Usually, the glasses are graciously arranged on the bottom shelf; easily accessible for the people who are less gifted in the height department (namely you). Strangely, today they are at the very top, shoved deep inside, so far in that you’d think that it had been done with malicious intent. If they were in the middle, perhaps you could’ve reached them with a little extra effort, but given their current position, even on your tiptoes you wouldn’t even come close. The tips of your fingers barely graze the bottom portion of the glass. You huff.
“Do you need help?”
Your head swivels to see a clearly humoured Jaehyun, his eyebrow arched.
“Yeah, someone’s kept the glasses on the top shelf,” you grumble, tenaciously continuing to reach for them despite knowing that you and your height—or rather, lack of it—have been bested. “Must’ve been Johnny. The tall-ass.”
“You’re probably right. It wouldn’t be his first time either.” You groan in exertion. “Hold on, let me help.”
“Thanks, Jae—”
Your eyes widen and your stature stiffens. Just the smell of his aftershave is enough to knock you out.
Jaehyun’s chest presses against your back firmly. His hot breath tickles your neck; the fine hairs stand on end. His right arm, hugged in the most breathtaking way by a black sweatshirt, reaches forward while his left is planted on the counter in front of you, caging you in. You’ve done your fair share of ogling at Jaehyun’s more than ravishing physique before, but only from afar. At this proximity however, you can individually trace every vein on his forearm. They’re like roots branching across the ample muscle. God, you’re making it very apparent that you’re staring.
While probably not the most proficient, you don’t dispute this method of reaching for glasses. You’re sure Jaehyun knows there are better ways to do this too.
Stunned, you all but stare in what you can only describe as awe at Jaehyun’s side-profile. Sharp lines accentuated by peculiarly delicate features, you can’t help but imagine how it would feel like running your fingers over the curves of his cheekbones, the arch of his nose and the dip of his cupid’s bow.
Jaehyun’s gaze latches onto yours, his arm still hanging above your head. You swallow dryly before licking your lips. Jaehyun’s jaw clenches, the movement guiding his eyes to them. The counter is digging into your hip.
“I got the glasses,” he breathes, your vicinity means you can practically taste the mint on his tongue.
“Thanks,” you mumble.
Neither of you move farther or closer to each other.
Jaehyun places the glasses beside you. “I should probably go set up the projector now.”
“Yeah, you should.” No, don’t.
He nods curtly, prods the inside his cheek with his tongue and shuffles out of the kitchen. You lean on the counter, recomposing yourself. Your heart pounds in your ribcage. Jaehyun’s lingering aftershave muddles any chance of a coherent thought.
What was that?
Sure, over the past week or two, you and Jaehyun have made your ever augmenting attraction to one another remarkably tangible, but neither of you had acted upon it. Until now.
Dazed, you almost forget to do what you had initially come in here for. You have to literally turn a 180 to retrieve the five glasses which sit innocuously on the countertop; they lay witness to your sins.
“So, how’d it go?”
“Did you do it?”
“Well, technically no, but—”
The four men are huddled together in the middle of the living room, each with equally suspicious expressions carved into their faces. Jaehyun’s back is turned to you as he’s hunched over, almost like he’s sharing some petty gossip.
You set the glasses down on the communal dining table, shift your weight on one leg and perch your hands on your hips like a disgruntled teacher waiting for her class to fall silent. Doyoung is first to sense your presence, nudging Johnny and jutting his chin towards you.
You can’t suppress the snort that courses through you when—simultaneously—all four of them disperse. It looks almost rehearsed.
“Why are you guys acting so weird today?”
Johnny sputters, Jungwoo chokes on presumably his own spit, Doyoung makes a sound which resembles more of a wheeze than a cough, and Jaehyun’s body goes completely rigid.
“We’re not acting weird,” scoffs Johnny.
You’re unconvinced. Just the way the whole room was immediately shrouded in a thick cloud of tension at your question was very telling.
“Yes, you ar—”
“Alright then,” Jaehyun clasps both of his hands together like a middle-aged man in the midst of a conference, “the movie! Jungwoo, what did you pick this week?”
Jungwoo hammers a fist to his heaving chest. “I picked Jojo Rabbit.”
“Oh, Minji noona watched it the other day. She told me it was so good she cried,” Johnny says. “And she rarely—if ever—cries over movies, or anything, really.”
“Why didn’t she and the others come over today? They’re always here for movie night.” By the others, you’re referring to the rest of the staff who are usually present. Being more or less the same age, the members naturally gravitated towards the rest of you; your closeness in years meant that you could easily relate to one another. You’d consider yourself a decently convivial person as well, which was probably another fundamental factor.
Once again, a restless fog congests the room. You seem to have struck another nerve.
Jungwoo tightens his grip on the remote. “They were… busy.”
His spontaneous lie is deplorable at best, but you let it slide.
You assume they think your conjectures have diffused because they seem to share a relieved glance; Jaehyun casts an appreciative smile to the bunch. He clears his throat. You don’t miss the mental exchange between him and Johnny, who grins wittingly.
“How about the snacks?”
All eyes are on you.
Your eyebrows cinch. “What?”
“The snacks,” Jungwoo reiterates. “You’re on snack duty.”
The way he says it makes it sound like you were aware of this. “No, I’m not.”
“Yeah, we told you in the groupchat,” Doyoung says. Jungwoo seems to be restraining a smile.
“No, you in fact, did not.” Scorned by this blatant accusation, you begin fishing your phone from your front pocket to show the others that none of you had come to that agreement.
Jaehyun’s hand coils around your wrist, halting your movements. “I’ll come.”
“I’m sorry?”
“I’ll come along with you to get the snacks,” his grip loosens, “if you want me to.”
“Oh.” Your arm falls limp to your side. You study Jaehyun’s earnest gaze. “Sure.”
It’s painfully palpable that the rest of the group were expecting this; their lips curling with a smirk of gaiety.
“Great, I’ll go grab some cash.”
You really should have thought twice about letting Jaehyun tag along.
“You should’ve stayed at home.”
“I wanted to come.”
You’re reasonably terrified, both for you and Jaehyun’s sake. Getting recognised out in public is an all too plausible scenario, and you really do not have the resolve or strength to fend off a horde of fans right now.
“Relax, it’s like 11pm. Nobody’s going to be just walking out here. At least, not anybody sober.”
While he makes a valid point, you’re still skittish. “Alright, but keep your head down.”
“How will I see where I’m going?”
Collecting your wits, you reach for his hand to tug him forward. “I’ll lead the way.”
Though Jaehyun is more than capable of staying grounded in his spot, you drag him along with relative ease, like a lifeless rag doll.
“I… was just kidding.”
Not looking back, you say, “Does that mean you want me to let go of your hand?”
Brazenly, Jaehyun intertwines his fingers with yours, strengthening his palm’s embrace. A jolt of exaltation zips up your spine.
“No, don’t.”
The remainder of the brisk walk to the convenience store is spent in exhilarating quietude, one that conveys a hundred messages. Not once does Jaehyun’s hold of your hand weaken.
The intimacy of the store welcomes you wholeheartedly. From its single constantly flickering bulb, that one cooler door with the rickety handle, and to the out-of-order slushie machine, you could peruse this store with your eyes closed. Being NCT’s camera operator first and designated snack buyer second, you’ve been in here more times than anyone should ever have to be in a lifetime.
It’s not the most popular store on the block. Their selection is limited, their interior outdated, but in your humble opinion, they are leagues ahead of any other store out there. Plus, it’s usually vacant, meaning minor risk of being spotted. Other than you, Jaehyun and the single weary employee, there’s only one other person in here, a tattered hood draped over their head. While they’re sketchy in a certain sense, you’re confident that they don’t pose a threat to you or Jaehyun’s safety.
“I’ll go get the crisps and you get the chocolates,” you declare, standing on your tiptoes.
“Chocolates? We’re getting chocolates? We already have some in the fridge.”
“Okay, then I’m getting chocolates.”
Another reason you love this place to bits is because of its prices. Everything is outrageously cheap. The first time you had visited, wet behind the ears, soul bursting with vigour yet pockets embarrassingly empty, you almost cried. You had one of the best dinners of your early adult life in this very store. Sure, it was just a truckload of processed, packaged food, but here’s the thing: it was a truckload. And when you’re as financially stable as a thumbtack balancing on the tip of its point, a truckload of food is a blessing bestowed by the Gods.
So, safe to say, you and Jaehyun definitely got your money’s worth.
In fact, in the time the two of you expended scouring the aisles for tid-bits, a forlorn cloud had consumed the sky. It had started raining. Lightly at first, but the drizzle had swiftly transitioned into a furious storm.
Thunder claps in the distance, the sound so tumultuous it shakes the tiles of the store floor, the vibrations so intense they reach the tip of your head.
“Do you have enough money for an umbrella?” you ask.
“Even with an umbrella, I think it’d be too dangerous for us to go out there,” Jaehyun says, and as if to illustrate his point, another bolt of lightning strikes the Earth. The convenience store trembles. “And no, I don’t have enough money for an umbrella.” From the tone of Jaehyun’s voice, his delight is hidden by the pretense that he too is upset by this development.
“Then I guess we’ll have to call one of the guys to pick us up.”
Jaehyun’s expression immediately turns sour. “I mean, yeah… I guess we could.”
Under normal circumstances, you would have been pouncing at the opportunity to spend some quality one-on-one time with Jaehyun, alas, three other undoubtedly starving men are waiting for your return.
A long, dull white counter, meant for customers to sit and eat at faces the heavy gloom outside. Droplets of rain cling to the glass like fluorescent crystals embedded to cave caverns, before slipping down in a wavering trickle, racing each other to the bottom. You take a seat on one of the plastic stools and Jaehyun takes the one beside you, dropping the bag of snacks to the floor.
“Hello?” Johnny’s sonorous voice greets through your speakers.
Jaehyun stares at you, anguished. To his right, the hooded stranger from earlier slips into the third stool, leaning forward and shelving their chin on a palm. They stare outside the window.
“Hey, Johnny. We got the snacks, but Jaehyun and I have a separate problem.”
“I know. It’s pouring.”
“Exactly,” you nod. Jaehyun looks like he’s about to crumble into a heap of anxiety. “Can you pick us up? We don’t have enough cash to hail a taxi.”
There’s a commotion on the other side of the line; hushed discussion and rustling of fabric. You can’t pick up a lot, only the words, “Yeah.” and “So, that’s what we’ll say?”
“Sorry,” Johnny finally says, after much delay. “I can’t.”
“What do you mean you can’t?”
Beside you, Jaehyun visibly perks.
“Car’s being repaired,” he replies languidly. “Mark popped a tyre while learning to drive the other day.”
You groan. “You’re joking.”
“Dead serious.”
“God, the car just had to be out today of all days.”
“Sorry, it can’t be helped,” Johnny sighs, a twinge of mischief to his voice. “The matter’s out of my hands.”
“It’s fine. We’ll just… wait it out or something.”
“We’ll try and see if any of the others can swing by and pick you guys up, so just stay put for now.”
“Alright thanks, Johnny. Sorry about tonight.”
“Nah, it’s fine,” he says. “Have fun with Jae.”
The call ends with a click before you can probe Johnny further.
“No go?” Jaehyun chirps.
You shake your head. “No, though you don’t seem bummed out about it.”
“Yeah,” he shrugs. “It’s not often I can spend some time alone with you anyway. In a way, I’m glad.” You bite the flesh of your cheek, face turning hot. Jaehyun turns in his seat, reaching down for the plastic bag. “And, we have snacks to—”
His eyebrows furrow.
“Jae?” His adam’s apple bobs in his throat. “The snacks?”
“They’re… gone.”
“What?”
“I put them right here beside me, but they’re gone! I swear I—”
The bell above the door chimes as the mysterious figure—the one who had been sat beside Jaehyun mere seconds ago—dashes out, with, lo and behold, a very familiar plastic bag dangling in their grasp.
You point a finger towards them. “They stole our snacks!”
Jaehyun’s head whips around to gawk at the culprit who has already made their way out of the store, head-first into Mother Nature’s wrath. He leaps out of his seat, hell-bent on chasing the person down, practically foaming at the mouth. “Motherfucker—”
This time, you’re the one who grips his wrist. “Jaehyun, wait. It’s not worth it.”
“They just stole all of our snacks! Am I supposed to just watch them get away with them?” he seethes. If not for his genuinely fuming expression, you would’ve laughed at the absurdity of the situation.
“They already had a head-start, Jae. I doubt you’ll be able to chase them down. And what if someone sees you? How are we supposed to explain why Jung Jaehyun of NCT was sprinting in the rain after a stranger with a bag of snacks?”
His shoulders sag. “But… our snacks… and your chocolate! What about your chocolate?”
“It’s fine. I didn’t even get the version I liked. They were all out of the original ones.”
Jaehyun slumps back into his seat, defeated. “Should we call the police?”
You snicker. “And tell them our snacks got stolen? They’d laugh in our faces.”
“I hate that you’re right. I wish they’d treat snack theft with the same severity of other crimes,” he jests, despite still being obviously disheartened. “Hope whoever that was gets struck by lightning and fucking sizzles out there.” He cards a hand through his hair. “I’m sorry.”
“It wasn’t your fault, Jae. I mean, who the hell steals snacks anyway?”
“No, not that. Well, I am sorry about that but what I meant was... I screwed this up.”
“Screwed what up?”
“You know how everyone was acting really strangely today?”
“You guys weren’t being very secretive about it.”
He huffs out a laugh. “Yeah, well, it was because they were helping me get us alone.”
Jaehyun’s confession is like the final piece of a puzzle; the final thread to connect all the dots together. “So that explains why everyone collectively decided to not show up today, and why the glasses were on the top shelf, and why you guys said I was on snack duty when I clearly wasn’t! And I bet the car isn’t even busted too!”
He nods, a wry smile etched onto his lips. “The glasses weren’t actually a part of the plan, but in the end, they were in my favour, so I’m not pissed about it.” You flush as the memory floods you. “They did all of that, and yet I still blew it.”
“Who said you blew it?” you say. Jaehyun lifts his head to look at you. “We’re alone right now, aren’t we?”
He swipes his tongue over his teeth. “Well, yeah, I suppose we are.”
“So, just tell me you like me already.”
Jaehyun jerks back in his seat. “You knew?”
“Of course I knew,” you grin, “because, I like you too.”
His face breaks out into the widest smile possible; one that stretches his lips so much that it must ache. “You do?”
“Yes, I do,” you giggle. “Even though you got our snacks stolen.”
By the time you two make it back to the dorm, clothes dripping rainwater onto the carpet, lips swollen from stolen kisses, and smiles teeming with euphoria, the rest of the street is already dark. Johnny, Jungwoo and Doyoung greet you with knowing smiles and playful comments.
“Look, I’m super happy for you guys and stuff but,” Jungwoo gestures to your empty hands, “where the hell are the snacks?”
Request 31: Jaehyun + “Leave me alone.” (3) + “Are you upset with me?” (17)
— 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐞𝐬𝐭𝐬 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐨𝐬𝐞𝐝.
Jaehyun is honestly, the sweetest, funniest and most romantic man out there. He’s like a bed of flowers; tender, kind and in all the sense of the word—beautiful. That’s Jaehyun, through-and-through. He’s truly the purest soul you know.
Yet all that does not matter at all to you at this very moment. The only thing that comes to mind as your eyes land upon Jaehyun’s beautiful giggling figure is a single word: prick.
You take it back, Jaehyun is not a bed of demure flowers, in fact he is quite the opposite. He is a big, fat, monstrous lump of dog poo. The kind of dog poo that you can smell from a mile away yet you don’t notice it splat on the concrete pavement until it’s too late and it’s smeared across your sole. The kind of dog poo that latches onto the grooves of your sole like super glue, refusing to wash off no matter how high the water pressure is.
“It’s not funny, Jaehyun!” you huff vexedly. “I was genuinely terrified!”
Your boyfriend snickers. “Yeah, you certainly seemed like you were.”
“You’re so annoying,” you whine. “I told you not to let go of the bike, didn’t I? But you did, and that’s why I fell!”
“Well, you didn’t tell me you can’t ride a bike,” says Jaehyun, an almost mocking grin etched onto his lips. “And that you have horrible balance.”
You toss a strawberry jam stained tissue at him, missing his head by a hair’s width. “I do not have horrible balance!”
“Sure, you don’t,” says Jaehyun, tone dripping with disbelief.
“I hate you, Jung Jaehyun.” You tsk indignantly, making a show of swivelling your head to turn away from him. “You’re the meanest boyfriend.”
“Are you upset with me?” Jaehyun pouts. “Aw, angel… Are you serious? Am I really the meanest boyfriend?”
Jaehyun’s calloused hand finds yours with ease, his long fingers intertwining with yours in one swift motion. The chilly metal of his rings are a stark contrast to your warm palm, and the difference in temperatures shoots a little thrill up your spine. The pad of Jaehyun’s thumb draws circles on the back of your hand in a soothing manner, diminishing your small grudge against him.
“Yes,” you reaffirm, but in all honesty, your childish hostility towards him wavers, if not shatters completely. “Leave me alone.”
“But I brought something for you! It’d be a real shame if I couldn’t give it to you…” Jaehyun’s sentence trails and he sighs theatrically, emphasising his disappointment. “But I don’t think you’d want it since I am the meanest boyfriend…”
You gnaw on your lip, your curiosity chipping away at your annoyance. What could he have brought you? Was it that necklace you’d been not so discreetly eyeing? Or that refreshing fruit tart that nearby cafe had on display last week? Your mind reels with endless possibilities.
“Well…” you tighten your grip of his hand, staring at him eagerly. “If you give it to me, I may consider revoking your ‘Meanest Boyfriend’ title.”
“That sounds fair.” Jaehyun pulls his hand from yours and smiles when the corners of your lips droop into a frown. “But you need to close your eyes. And put your hands out.”
“What?” you grumble. “Come on, Jae. I wanna see what it is.”
Jaehyun tuts disapprovingly. “Nu-uh, I really want it to be a surprise. Now, don’t be stubborn, and close your eyes already, babe.”
“Fine.” You cross your arms over your chest, the world going pitch black as your eyes flutter shut. “Happy now?”
“Very,” murmurs Jaehyun. “No peeking, okay?”
“Yeah, yeah, get on with it.”
“So impatient…”
You crease your eyebrows, your palms open in front of you as you await for whatever surprise Jaehyun has in store for you. He sure is taking his sweet old time, you can’t help but think. A tranquil silence envelopes you, the only sounds being the occasional rustle of the leaves of the tree you sit under or the muted sound of Jaehyun’s track pants against the picnic mat. Your heart thumps in your chest in anticipation.
Just as you’re about to open your eyes and ask him what’s taking so long, you feel it. His soft lips pressing against yours gently, almost timidly. They’re warm and familiar and, quintessentially Jaehyun. His hand reaches behind you to cup your neck, pulling you towards him, coaxing you nearer, intoxicating you even further as the kiss deepens. A flower of heat blooms in your cheeks, the petals making your skin tingle. You can hear you and Jaehyun’s synchronised heartbeats in your ears, the steady pounding drowning out all other sounds.
And just as abruptly, Jaehyun‘s lips part from yours. Your eyes immediately shoot open, your lips swollen and your pupils dilated. Jaehyun grins broadly.
“Jaehyun, what—”
“Did you like it?”
You gawk dumbly. “Like what?”
“The peach lip balm I bought for you,” Jaehyun raises a brow.
Your tongue darts out to lick at your lips, finding it in fact does taste faintly of peaches. “Well, it’s okay, I guess.”
“So, am I no longer the ‘Meanest Boyfriend’?”
“Well, I said it’s okay. I never said it was mindblowingly spectacular or anything…” You fiddle with the hem of your shorts.
“Oh, is that so?” Jaehyun’s lips quirk up into a wicked smile as he holds your chin between his thumb and index finger, leaning into you, lips glossy from the balm and no doubt your kiss. “Why don’t I kiss you again and we’ll see for sure?”

You didn’t mean to let this happen. You thought you had this under control—you usually do—but evidently you don’t. They crawl up from your gut, funnel through your lungs and squeeze past your throat. Tears sting your eyes; hot and unabashed.
“I’m sorry, Doyoung.”
He gapes at you, flustered by this onslaught of emotions. “Wait, no, babe, I’m sorry. Did I say something wrong?”
You paw at your eyes with the sleeves of your sweater, the pressure in your trachea building momentum despite your efforts. “No, you didn’t,” you sniffle. “It’s just… I’ve been such a bitch.” Again, you don’t mean to, but your last sentence leaves your blubbering lips in a half-wail and Doyoung’s arm instinctively pull your face to his chest. His hand rubs your hair which is undoubtedly greasy from all the neglected hours of self-care.
“A bitch? What? No way,” he says. “Why would you think that?”
He smells like pinecones and crackling fire. “Because I’ve been so mean to you all week.” Doyoung looks at you, confused like he and you have been living in two separate realms for the past seven days. “I’ve been snappy, and I ignored all your calls, and I pushed away all your hugs, and I got mad at you because the strawberries you cut for me the other day were sour when it wasn’t even your fault and—”
Doyoung lays two chaste kisses on the apples of your tear-streamed cheeks, effectively quelling your rambling. He shakes his head. “No, it’s okay, I get it.” You peer up at him, gaze bleary. “I know you’ve been stressed over finals lately, and that it’s been hard. I was an ass during my exams too, and I just want to be here for you through it all, okay?” He thumbs away your tears. “Now, stop crying and get back to those last few moments of studying so you can kick finals in the ass.” You nod weakly. “I’ll cut up some strawberries for you, and this time, I promise they won’t be sour.”
↳ The power just went out in your boyfriend’s place and unfortunately for you, you’re terrified of the dark.

When was the last time you felt like this?
“Ah damn, it’s happened again. What a pain.”
Your palms are covered in sweat, you’re quite literally frozen in place and all you want to do is screw your eyes shut and tuck yourself away beneath your warm soft sheets.
“I’m really sorry about this, babe. Honestly, this happens a lot more often than you’d think. Power should be back on in a few minutes though.”
Funnily enough, this almost paralysing terror that has overcome you reminds you of your childhood. In fact, that was probably the last time you felt this vulnerable. It makes your scalp tingle.
Your ears ring despite the drop-dead silence which envelops the room. Your chest feels like it’s expanding, forming this gargantuan cavity, yet your throat feels tight and you’re choking on the very air you breathe.
“Hey, you’re being awfully quiet…” Haechan’s voice is one of concern. “Are you okay?”
Swallowing your fear with a trembling pulse, you answer his question shakily. “Yeah, I’m fine.”
“Obviously, you aren’t.” Haechan’s hand still manages to find yours, even in completely darkness. “What’s the matter? Why’re you acting so weird?”
“It’s nothing, Hyuck,” you grit out.
“No way it’s nothing,” he says stubbornly. “Stop lying to me.”
You don’t know why admitting to Haechan that you’re scared of the dark is such a daunting task, but the words feel heavy on your tongue.
“Come on, you can tell me what’s bugging you. You’re not scared of the dark are you?” Haechan teases, but at the hitch of your breath and the stunned silence that follows, he realises with a start that he just answered his own question. “Wait, seriously?”
You fiddle with your fingers, leaving his question hanging in the air.
Haechan almost does a double-take and if you weren’t about to piss your pants, you’d probably laugh. “Wait, what? You’re serious. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“It’s dumb, Hyuck, that’s why.”
“No, of course it isn’t! Being scared of the dark is a pretty common thing, you shouldn't have to feel ashamed of it. Look, don’t think about it too much. I promise the lights will be back soon and guess what? I’ve decided that as your lovely and adoring boyfriend, I’m going to keep you safe until then.”
You can’t help but giggle a little at his declaration and how foolish it sounds. He sounds like a little boy. It still makes your heart flutter regardless.
“There’s my girl,” he says, a smile in his voice. “But seriously, is there anything I can do to help?”
You nibble on your bottom lip. “Can we cuddle? I think that’d help.” You pause. “At least a little.”
“Aww, baby, of course.” With your limited vision, you see Haechan spread his arms open for you. “Come here.”
At his invitation, you’re quick to clamber into his lap, burying your face in the crook of his neck. You really didn’t expect this to work so well, but the combination of the warmth radiating from his chest and the smell of his faint soap lulls your jittery nerves considerably. Haechan presses his lips against your hair.
“I’ll tell you when you can open your eyes, okay?” he breathes. “You’re gonna be alright. I’m here for you.”
