You gave everything to understand his world, only to realize he never wanted you in it
You had always admired the way his eyes lit up on the court.
It was different from how they looked at you—colder, sharper, more fleeting. But when the ball was in the air, when his hands were raised, when victory was within reach, he looked alive. He looked like he belonged.
And you wanted so badly to belong there with him.
So you tried. God, you tried.
You memorized rotations and signals, rewound televised games until your eyes blurred, filled notebooks with rules and terms you thought would matter to him. You stayed up late practicing how to call plays under your breath, whispering quick set and back row attack into the silence of your room like prayers you hoped he’d hear.
Every time you stumbled, you smiled through it. Every time he sighed, you told yourself, Next time, I’ll get it right.
But tonight was different.
You had waited for him after practice, sitting in the gym long after everyone else had gone. The fluorescent lights buzzed overhead, painting the floor in sickly pale streaks. You held your notebook in your lap, pages bent from being turned too many times.
He walked out, shoulders heavy with exhaustion, sweat clinging to his shirt.
“Good game,” you said softly, offering him the smile you always did. “Your serves… they looked faster tonight.”
For a moment, his eyes flickered to you. Not in pride. Not in warmth. Just… tiredness.
“It’s always been the same speed,” he muttered.
“Oh. I just thought—” You laughed nervously, flipping open your notebook. “I was reading about the difference between float serves and topspin serves, and I thought maybe—”
He cut you off with a sharp exhale. “You don’t get it.”
The words were like a stone hurled into your chest.
Still, you pushed. You had to.
“Then explain it to me,” you whispered. “Tobio, I’m trying. I want to understand. I want to understand you.”
Silence stretched. He wouldn’t look at you. His hands tightened around his bag strap, knuckles white.
When he finally spoke, his voice was quieter, but heavier. Final.
“You’ll never understand.”
And then he walked past you.
The echo of the gym door slamming shut was louder than any cheer, louder than any whistle.
You sat frozen, notebook still open in your lap. Pages filled with desperate ink stared back at you—scribbled diagrams of court positions, definitions you barely grasped, reminders to “ask Tobio what this means.” Every word was a sacrifice, every line a piece of yourself you had given up just to meet him halfway.
But halfway had never been enough.
Your hands shook as you tore out a page, the one where you had written Volleyball = Kageyama’s world. Try to love it too. You crumpled it, pressed it against your chest, and let the tears finally fall.
For the first time, you realized—
You weren’t losing to the sport.
You were losing to the only language he knew how to love.

KAGEYAMA
He was scared
“Don’t give me that bullshit”
“It’s true.”
“I don’t care if it’s true, I don’t want to fucking hear it,” you sigh tearily,
“If you’re scared grab a fucking blankie, or actually talk to me like an adult. Don’t fuck some rando in my fucking house.”
You were crying but your anger still made him wilt into himself.
‘Afraid of how you made him feel’. Fucking disgusting.
“I said I’m sorry! i don’t want to throw this away! Please!”
He took your hand.
“What can I do? What can I do to fix this? tell me and i’ll do anything.”
“You can’t do anything for me anymore. Just get out of my house, please.”
USHIJIMA
you were too much
“I’m sorry Y/N. I’m sorry I didn’t talk to you, I’m sorry I hurt you, I’m so sorry.”
He was crying, but you didn’t really get it. He clutched at your hands, crouched in front of you, tears streaming down his blotchy face. You were dead behind the eyes, far away from here, from him. You remember the start, when you were so young, so naive. You thought it would be better to lie, pretending you were quite and reserved, happy with minimal chit-chat, content with little affection. You thought it would be better to keep your personality and tastes under wraps just to hold onto him, not to make a nuisance of yourself. You loved him, you could change for him.
As time went on, you grew closer, more and more infatuated with each other. Trusting in him, you decided you could stop tweaking yourself, you thought you could be yourself around him, be a little louder than before, a little more clingy, and little more demanding.
You wish you had faked it longer.
The real you drove him away, how you felt was too much work, you were too much work.
Not only did you drive him away, you drove him into someone else’s arms.
You needed more affection than he could give, it was so easy to call her up, and relax. You could be so loud nowadays, and she was like a detox, helping him be rid of the edge of annoyance that your constant chatter could bring on. He still loved you, but... you were different now.
You were worse.
He only realised what he’d done when you’d found out. He realised he still loved you, but he didn’t know if it was in that way anymore.
“Ushijima,” Your voice was shakier than you liked, and he wasn’t fond of it either.
He waited patiently for you to continue anyway, however much it stung that you used his last name. He understood, he couldn’t ask anything of you anymore. He could only listen.
“You don’t want me still, do you?”
He paused. He wasn’t going to say it directly, but if you asked, he couldn’t lie.
“No, Y/N. But I-“
“Then there’s nothing else to say. I can just... um, I’m going to-“
Swallowing, you made to continue, but your face burned, and you couldn’t see. Your tears were fat in your eyes, blurring your vision.
You gave up pretending to be numb, and hunched forwards, letting your sobs overtake you. He shuffled back and covered his mouth with his forearm to muffle his own gasps, eyes scrunched with remorse. He hated seeing you like this, despite what he did. He cared about you, whether he realised it before or not. But he did this to you, so he was going to sit here and take it until you sent him away.
DAICHI
he didn’t know
Everything was perfect.
He wouldn’t change a thing.
He loved you, he loved you so much. More than he’s ever loved anything.
But when a pretty girl made eyes at him from across the bar, he faltered anyway. He didn’t want for anything with you. You were attentive, affectionate, understanding, stunning. Even as she led him away, he was questioning why he was there, what the hell he was doing. But her lips felt so nice, just like yours had felt that morning when you kissed him goodbye before work, and her touch was as soft as yours, just as inviting.
He knew it wasn’t good enough to say he didn’t know, but it was the only full truth.
He wish he knew but the question still remained,
Why?
Why?
Why?
“Why?”
“I don’t know, Y/N,” He said hoarsely.
“You what?” Your voice trembled, with misery or rage he couldn’t tell.
“I don’t know. She just... She came up to me, and I didn’t... I don’t know why.”
You scoffed, and flounced down onto the dining room chair, aggressively taking a sip of bottled water and closing the cap in a scramble. You were so angry you couldn’t think. He had betrayed you, ruined your perfect life together, and he wouldn’t tell you why.
“Really Daichi, the least you could do is tell me. Don’t try and spare my feelings now.”
“I really- I really don’t know. We were- are perfect. There’s nothing wrong with anything.” He had covered his face with his hands, resting all his weight on the wall. He was becoming hysterically, and he knew it was selfish to fall apart in front of you when he gave in at the lightest flirtation.
“I’m just pathetic and-and weak, and I love you. I love you so much Y/N, I don’t want this to end.”
You sighed and ran your fingers through your hair, tugging to the point of slight pain.
"lips meet teeth and tongue" you speak as you kiss him for the last time, walking away as tobio grabs your wrist, tears in his eyes.
tobio is crying now, "my heart skips eight beats at once" his words aee coming out as sobs. but he can't make himself look at you
"your love feels so fake" you snarl at your once boyfriend. you had caught him kissing a fan after a game, her hands in his hair as they made out.
"baby please, let me explain" you won't let him say anything, he knew better then to talk to you when you were mad.
5 years together and a ring on your finger, yet he was still kissing fans.
"if we were meant to be..." you cut yourself off, unable to keep speaking as you compose yourself, not wanting to cry, "we would've been by now"
your voice cracks as the tears start to flow, "see what you wanna see but all i see is him right now" you refer to the days when you had first met him, the guy who was obsessed with kissing groupies.
he loved the attention, he adored it. but when he saw you, it all fell into place, or you had thought.
"go ahead and watch my heart burn" you bute at him, your words like hot needles against his heart.
"y/n... i love you so much" he begs you to stay with those words that mean nothing now.
"how do i know you hadn't kissed others!?" it's obvious you are in a state of heartbreak, "how many-" you lick your lips to get the last taste of tobio off them.
"your lies will never keep, i think you need to blow them out" you spit at him again, he's not seeing how mad you are, not yet.
"8-8-2015, i still remember that" the day you met, "heaven sent a present my way" your anniversary was a day you both remembered, they were always lavish. he made sure of that, pampered you, treated you like the princess you deserve to be.
"i won't forget your laugh" he mumbles, still unable to look up at you, unable to look at the woman he made his with a ring, with a baby on the way.
"found guilty in the court of aorta" you walk away from him, dropping the shared house keys in his hand.
(new mini series, request a character you would like :> )
Kageyama really likes you, In the beginning he was always really intimidating to you, well honestly you thought he hated you because most times in class he would always stare at you or either glare but poor boy just had a big crush on you, you were forced to sit by him because the teacher told you that he really needed help with his English assignments and that he was struggling, Kageyama was secretly happy but didn’t show it while you could feel so much awkward tension, it was after school and the both of you surprisingly just finished your after school clubs, you went by the vending machine thinking you had some spare change for a strawberry yogurt but seeing the raven haired boy struggling to choose a flavor you tried getting away only for him too see you “hi l/n” he greeted you awkwardly blushing “oh hi Kageyama San” you said clearing your throat “here you can pick before me” he said backing away “are you sure?” “Y-yeah” he said almost in a yell finally getting to have a “real” conversation with his crush, you went towards the vending machine looking at the button for strawberry flavor putting in your spare change into the slot only noticing you needed one more coin and Kageyama noticing you trying to find an extra coin, he went towards you his calloused hand slightly touching yours putting his coin in for you “Kageyama I’m so sorry” “it’s okay I have tons of spare change” he said standing awkwardly “thank you Kageyama San I owe you” you said walking away face heated while he was watching you walk away “spare change? I sound like my grandma” he muttered hitting his head from embarrassment
what you didn’t know was that little encounter over a strawberry yogurt drink was the start of you and Kageyama Tobio becoming closer…
you were really tired today, you decided to not go hangout at your friends class and just stay in your seat, till you heard a chair scooting your way and something on your desk, looking up it was Kageyama awkwardly on his phone drinking his yogurt “hi l/n San” he said giving you a head knod, slowly passing you the beverage “for me?” You said wide awake noticing the raven hair male slowly knod, “thank you…” you said with a tired smile poking the drink with the straw seeing Kageyama hold in his blush he just looks intimidating you said to yourself holding in your laugh, this time helping Kageyama study felt more calm, the tension slowly disappeared and the both of you talked more, the both of you didn’t even knew class ended and you both said your goodbyes only to see each other, only to see you walking by the school exit after your club and surprisingly he finished practice early to, “Hey I wasn’t done talking Kageyama!” The tangerine haired boy said irratated only for Kageyama to ignore him “hey” he said with his deep voice making you gasp from shock seeing him pull your bag giving you a little wave “oh hi Kageyama” you said smiling at him face slightly tinted pink“ do you wanna go to McDonald’s with me?” He said out of impulse regretting saying it “y-yeah sure why not” you said awkwardly, and that’s how the routine of after school clubs the both of you would go to Mc Donald’s and order French fries and share the order, laughing and talking about school and friends, this was the first time he felt connected to someone, he had a bond with someone, the first time he ever felt included and wanted, he wished he could of talked to you before so he could of experienced this and you wished you took the time to talk to him in the past because now, you had a huge crush on him, and his feelings for you grew instantly after spending more days together, and everytime he walked you home he did this little dorky thing where he gave you a little headpat and speed walk the opposite direction which made you laugh or when he chews on the straw when you help him study for English class, but it all had to end soon one day right?
“Kageyama your grade in my class is perfect!” the teacher said amazed at his English grade making Kageyama proud “now l/n won’t have to teach you anymore” the teacher chuckled not knowing Kageyama’s smile faded at the thought of once he stops asking you for help, maybe the both of you would go back to strangers… no that couldn’t happen you two are basically so close, he stopped overthinking and went to volleyball practice seeing you were in the gym taking photos for your club “Say cheese Tobio kun” you teased taking a photo of Kageyama making him kind of unaware, since he became closer to you he understood jokes more and knew how to join in “hey delete that” he said grabbing the camera away from you by raising it up high so that it was hard for you to reach “hey! Not fair Tobio” you said trying to grab it but looking like you were hugging him “say please” “please Tobio?” You said teasingly jumping higher finally getting it but lips slightly accidentally making contact on his cheek making the raven haired flustered turning away from your shocked face “Send me a toss!” Hinata said entering the gym making you sigh from relief “oh hi l/n chan” he said wondering what was happening “oh hi Hinata! Well I gotta go bye!” You said running out of the gym passing by the other volleyball members seeing your flustered face…
That night it was surprising that the both of you weren’t able to sleep, Kageyama playing with his volleyball to clear his mind still somehow feeling your lips on his cheek, and you eyes wide awake touching the lips that touch his cheek heart beating at a rapid rate “why did I make this so awkward?” The both of you said in unison falling asleep hearts throbbing…
After that day the teacher told you there was no need for you to sit next to him anymore, maybe it was for the best right? He didn’t seem to care, you tried giving him a wave but he just avoided your eye contact and pretended he was on his phone… and that’s how the both of you went your separate ways, if he’s acting like this why not do the same thing? Nothing personal right? You were just helping Kageyama as a fellow classmate that’s all…
this happened for three weeks, in the end Kageyama knew what he was doing was stupid but whenever he tried confronting you, you were in your group of friends or you weren’t in the classroom till today after school you were at the vending machine looking for 100 yen and that’s when Kageyama saw you, he slowly went from behind forgetting how to breathe and approach you “h-hey” he said gripping the volleyball nervously “hey…. Kageyama san…” you said shocked trying to get out of the way only for him to get closer “how have you been?” “I’ve been good, how about you?” “Good…” “we’ll see yo-“ you said only getting cut off by him gently taking your hand “do you really hate me from that y/n?” He said embarrassed while your heart beated harder not being able to look him in the face “I didn’t mean to- it’s my fault I’m sorry for making you uncomfortable-“ he said only for you to take his hand back “you didn’t do anything wrong Tobio kun… it was my fault I’m the one who made you uncomfortable” you said sighing out loud embarrassed “no you don’t understand… I really like you and I just wanted to be close to you! And that I didn’t mean for you to avoid me” he said hitting his head regretting what he said “you were avoiding me first that’s why I thought you needed space- wait you like me?” You said flustered looking at the face red boy avoiding your gaze “y-eah I do…” “I like you too Tobio” you said laughing at the both of you being idiots and him looking at you shocked “so would you be my girlfriend-if not that’s okay I understand that we’re going too-“ “Tobio of course I’ll be your girlfriend now com on let’s go it’s getting very dark” you gave him a little kiss on the cheek making him more red intertwining his hands with yours
… -> plot : after years, Tobio Kageyama suddenly doesn’t know you anymore.
… -> authors note : i’m officially here to make you all suffer <3 love ya. this is also, not proof read so I apologise for any grammatical mistakes
your grin grew wider as you watched your childhood friend balance on the playground facilities. you laughed as he struggled to stay put on the balance board. “come on Tobio, you can better!” you walked to him, his hand quickly flew to your head for support. he smiled widely as the end of the board neared. “you’re so slow.” you swept away from his grip, waiting for him at the end of the board. he scoffed as he reached you, hopping down beside you. “shut up, it’s not like you’re any better.” he pushed you with his shoulder as he walked towards the slide.
you were both 15 but you still enjoyed some good old playground visits. “is that challenge?” you raised your brow as you turned to him. he scoffed again, shrugging his shoulders. “is it?” he looked at you over his shoulder. “bet.” you ran to the opposite end of the balance board, stepping one foot on it. after successfully standing up, Tobio was quick to follow behind. you walked forward, stretching out your arms to keep your balance. “oi, dumbo. don’t rush it you’ll lose balance.” you frowned at his comment before turning around. “you’re not one to talk!” he huffed before you started to laugh again. that laugh. it had his heart beating every time. as you were leaning backwards, Tobio knew you’d fall right on your ass. he grabbed your wrist to keep you upright. you stopped laughing, staring at him with wide eyes. “oh-“ “you were about to fa-“
you both stared at each other in the pile of rough sand. then you laughed. both your laughs rang through the silent after-noon outside the local convenience store. “you’re so stupid!” “i didn’t do anything!” “you did! you distracted me, i saved your ass just for you to push me over!” “i did not!”
“y/n?” you shook your head as you look beside you. you had dozed off again. back into the distant memories. “yeah, Ryū?” the buzz-cut haired guy chuckled. “you zoned out again. what’s on your mind, kid?” he looked at you. you opened your mouth to speak before closing it again and shrugging your shoulders. “‘m dunno.” you mumbled before looking out the window of the bus. “hm~, you sure?” Ryū tilted his head. you nodded, your mind traveling back to Tobio. it had only been a few months since you played on that playground.
“alright kids were here. keep together, i’m not losing any of you again.” you looked as coach Ukai stood up, quickly scanning the bus to check everyone really was there. as you made your way out the bus, you looked at Tobio. wanting to talk to him before the match, you walked up to him. he made eye-contact with you for a few seconds before leaving to talk with Shōyō. you frowned to yourself. he was ignoring you? why would he do that? had you done something wrong? said something? is it because you turned down his music request at yesterday’s practice? you waited for the others to walk before Shimizu walked to you. you started walking again. “Tobio’s ignoring me.” you pouted angrily as the two of you were trailing. Shimizu nodded understandingly. “maybe he’s not feeling too well.” you looked at her as the team entered the gym hall.
the team won the game. you were happy for them, clapping from the stands. you hurried down to them, smiling widely. you wanted to run to Tobio, so you did. he was at the net, quietly arguing with the captain of Aoba Johsai that they had been playing against. “Tobio! congratulations!” you grinned before making eye contact with the taller brown-eyed male on the other side. “who’s this, Tobio-chan?” you looked back at Tobio, expecting a ‘my best friend since childhood’ kind of thing. Tobio frowned, scrunches up his nose and stared back at the older guy. “I don’t know them.”
you froze. the words replayed in your head. 'I don't know them.' the brown-eyed boy looked at you again. the salty water bubbles threatened to burst in the corner of your eyes. you bit down on your lip, fearing that it'd burst with blood. both the males looked at you like you were nothing. you turned around on your heel and gasped softly as you really realised what he had said. you let go of your lips and covered your moth as you widened your eyes to prevent your eyelids to hit them tears and make them fall. you hurried down the hall. that was it. he was gone, for real.
summary: kageyama tobio loves you even when you rip him apart.
genre: angst
warning(s): cheating, implied sex but it's reaaally tiny you won't even notice
a/n: just something short to fight my writer's block - i have a few works sitting in my drafts but cant finish them yet bc writers block is mean :( ps i do not condone cheating, this is purely for the plot
kageyama tobio loves you so much he is willing to give up everything for you. anything you want he'll get them for you even if he has to go through the ends of the earth searching for them. he loves you so much he doesn't care if you finish the cartons of milk in the fridge. he loves you so much he'd even give up volleyball if you ask him to.
kageyama also loves you so much that he ignores the scent of another man's perfume lingering on your skin and clothes. he pretends not to notice that you've been coming home later than usual, coming home to an empty apartment which was usually lit up and smelled like popcorn as you watch movies on netflix.
you still lovingly smile at him like before, the laugh he loves to hear still the same, and your hugs and kisses still as passionate and comforting as if you aren't giving them to another man. kageyama basks in your touch, wanting to keep you by his side, a sickening feeling in his guts at the thought that you might one day decide to leave him.
he loves you too much to pretend he's okay when you ask him. he knows you notice the way his hugs have become tighter, kisses become more desperate, marks on your body as he bites at your delicately soft skin more than usual.
"do you love me?" he asks, leaving wet kisses on your neck, making you sigh in content and move closer to him, pressing your back against his bare chest.
"of course, tobio," you hum.
"only me?"
your eyes flutter open, turning around to face him as you place a hand on his cheek, a worried look painting your features when looking at his somber blue eyes.
"yes baby," you say, but he knows it's a lie. "just you."
"i love you," kageyama whispers, tightening his grip on your waist as he fights against his breaking heart and his tears, his world crumbling into pieces.
you smile sweetly, caressing his cheek. "love you too, tobio."
for now, he forces himself to believe in your lies and to pretend everything is okay. he convinces himself you'll eventually come back to him as a whole and by then he'll accept you willingly with open arms because he just loves you.
kageyama tobio just loves you too much to still stay even when you're cheating. even when it rips him apart inside.
rbs and feedbacks r appreciated stay safe babes <3
About: You were introduced to the Karasuno Boys’ Volleyball club during your second year. Yachi needed help after Kiyoko had taken her leave, so she asked you to join her. Although, it would have been smarter to look for a first year, but you were new and looked lonely. When you met the boys you were bit overwhelmed but they grew on you in no time. Kageyama was a little rough around the edges at first, he was awkward and couldn’t hold eye-contact. He was a blushing baboon for the first few days. He was sure to keep his distance but you only found it exciting and hilarious. Sure enough you two became friends from all your taunting and teasing. You’re about to enter your third year, and this was your make it or break it. You had to start thinking about your own future- and so did Kageyama.
A/N: Thank you for the support! And new follows! I’m glad I’m not the only Kageyama simp :) I also like creating shorts with random prompts, it gets the creative juices going. So if you have any requests or such, please let me know. And... uh hope you like this part.
Cloudy Skies
Kageyama would never admit it but he kept thinking about that question. He answered truthfully but something bothered him about that. Not that it was honest but rather the answer itself.
"Kags!" You screamed before the ball could hit him in the face, but he just snapped his head to you. The sound echoed in the gym and he fell backwards at impact. Everyone flinched and made a pained face but your eyes widened with worry.
"I'm so sorry, Kageyama!" Tadashi bowed and apologized several times. He grew red in embarrassment and you would have teased him and called him cute if it wasn't for the growing red mark on Tobio’s cheek. You rushed over with Yachi along with Coach Ukai.
"Come on kid, talk to me." Coach Ukai examined the bruise. It wasn't anything too serious but he knew it had to hurt like hell. Especially to a body who wasn't ready for impact. "Someone go get a bag of ice!" Yachi ran.
"Don't say sorry to him, Yamaguchi, he was the one who wasn't paying attention." Tsuki pushed his glasses up even though they're his volleyball ones. A habit that hasn't died down. He was the only one who didn't step a little forward towards Kageyama.
"Put a cap on your salt, Tsuki," you yelled. It surprised a few of the players with your sudden authority. Even Tsuki tsked quietly.
There was little more venom in your words than usual, like a warning to back off.
"Woah! Did you mean to catch that with your face?!" Hinata jumped to get a better look. "If it wasn't for Y/N, you'd have a bad nosebleed right now Kageyama!"
"Can someone shut him up?" He groaned trying to get up to a sitting position. You shot a look at Shoyo that begged and ordered him to settle down, which he took quickly. Coach Ukai let out a sigh of relief when Tobio finally spoke up. You released a breath- one you didn’t know you were holding.
Coach Ukai asked him a few questions to check how hard the ball hit him. He answered them as best as he could but you snickered when he couldn't answer any government related questions- although Ukai looked around to verify if it was wrong or right with other team players. He was okay. Okay as he could be.
"Alright kid, take a break and we'll fill in for you. Get whatever is on your mind out, it's important that you find that focus again." Ukai helped him up and ushered him off the court. You grabbed onto his arm, in case he needed help with his balance, and led him to the sideline where you and Yachi stayed. Yachi came back with the ice pack and accidentally shoved it too hard onto Kags.
"Ah!" He winced from the cold and the pressure on his bruise.
"Sorryyy…. Here." She handed you the pack abruptly. "I'll go get a chair!" You watched as she ran and struggled to get a chair out. Hopefully someone will help her out.
Kageyama leaned on the wall for support and winced again when he tried to touch his cheek. You swat his hand away-
"Hey!" He glared at you for a second but once he saw your worried look he glared at the floor. "You'd make a horrible nurse," he mumbled.
However, he was taken by surprise when your fingertips made contact with his cheek. You grabbed his face and turned him to you so gently he wanted to flutter his eyes closed to rest a bit. It was then he knew that what he had said was a complete and total lie.
You applied the ice to his cheek, careful with the pressure thanks to Yachi. You were close, almost as close as when you were dancing together. He could feel you- like a presence, it made sense cause you were right there. But it still felt weird to him. And for a second- but what felt longer- you were the only thing in his vision. Your soft smile of reassurance and your caring eyes and how they expressed more emotion than words. He even noticed some marks here and there that he could've sworn weren't there before… and yet he found them...he found them beautiful. Like they added to you being already perf-
"Does it hurt?" Your voice was low and gentle, completely different from when you used it at Tsukishima. You were worried he might be playing the pain down, so he can jump back into practice. You should've pulled him aside when he wasn't responding to Shoyo's usual banter. He was quiet, and clearly lost in thought but you assumed it had to do with volleyball. You expected him to be back to normal once he started playing. And once he was reacting slower and moving slower than usual, you realized he wasn't fully here.
He realized you asked him a question after a moment. "No...no, the ice is working."
You smiled in relief and let him take over the pack. You took a few short steps back and crossed your arms content with your minimal work.
"See," you said confidently, "I might be a good nurse after all."
Before he could agree, Yachi came rushing in with a chair. Kageyama took his seat without argument, a surprise to both you and Yachi.
"Take all the time you need and then some, we'll be right over there if you need anything."
"But don't let that go to your head, your majesty," you teased. He hates that nickname with a passion so there was always some sort of burst of energy. But all he could do was roll his eyes. It let you know that something was still bothering him, and that wiped away your grin.
The rest of practice, Kags quietly stayed on the sidelines but watched the team with a sharp eye. It was weird of him to not want to continue playing, but you were also sort of glad he took time to rest. Maybe that ball did hit him a little too hard though… No- he said he was fine. Plus, if it was serious, Ukai would've rushed him to the nurse or something. There have been worse injuries in the team and Hinata has taken a few shots to Kageyama's head. So… he should be fine.
During clean up time, Ukai told Kageyama he can head home early, instead he stayed and helped a bit then waited for you. After changing, he stood by the stairs and stared at something in the distance with his back towards you. For some reason you were nervous. Your foot wouldn't stop tapping or you would pull on your fingers and try to crack your knuckles. He was being annoyingly quiet, and that put you on edge, clearly. You thought Kageyama was a simpleton, he only thought about volleyball and food. But you liked that because you always knew what he was thinking.
Until now. He's right there and he's quiet and he's not talking and he has almost no expression on his face and he's just not... here. Did someone say something to him? Was he upset? Or sad?
You wondered all of this as you got closer to him, you thought he'd be too lost in whatever was bothering him to notice you but he glanced at you.
"Ready?" He asked, tightening his strap. Once you gave him a small nod, you both started walking towards your house.
"You sure you don't want me to walk you to your house? We don't have to study today if you need some time alone," you offered him. You didn't want him to feel obligated to go to your house. You told him during clean up he didn't have to, but he just ignored you by scowling Shoyo over some sloppy mopping.
"Do you not want me to come over?" He looked at you from the corner of his eye waiting for your reaction. You just shrugged awkwardly and looked away from him.
"It's not that, it's just you got hit and-"
"It's just a bruise, Y/N."
You snapped your head back at him with a wild look. "Well yeah! You don't really get those!"
"Volleyball guarantees bruises, you know that." His voice didn't elevate like yours did, it was unbothered and didn't show any signs of caring.
"What were you thinking about during practice?"
He didn't respond. You thought he might be taking a minute to figure out his wording, like usual, but he was just straight up ignoring you.
"Tobio!"
Nothing. He was giving you absolutely nothing. He just kept walking while you waved your hands like a crazy person. So you stopped walking. You would've let it go if he told you he didn't want to talk about or hell, even if he said it's none of your business. But not responding and obviously ignoring you!?
He stopped and turned to you a few feet away. The sun was setting and the street lights behind you were turning on one by one. He noticed the thick clouds gliding towards you two, another rainy afternoon.
"Y/N, come on let's go. I'm not getting stuck in the rain again." He looked tired, like the thought of arguing itself was draining him. You would've walked in silence, but you were a bit pissed off. Why? Why was his silence bothering you so much? Was he finally getting tired of you? Were you the one who said something? What did you say? If it bothered him so much, he should've said something! Or… was it the dance? Did you step out of line? But…
"Tell me why you've been so quiet, Tobio." Your demand did little on his reaction. He sighed and placed his hand on his forehead, tired once again. When he just mentioned the rain again, you stomped your foot like a child. "Fine! Don't tell me and don't come over today!" You marched past him with your arms crossed over your chest.
He felt a drop on his nose and heard the sound of the approaching rain. You were mad and it almost seemed like the rain followed your gloomy state.
"You really don't want me to come over?"
"No!"
"Y/N, you're being ridiculous." That seemed to piss you off even more. So you quickly turned to scream almost a block away.
"And you're being a shady idiot Kageyama! Since when do we keep secrets!"
"Why are you so keen on knowing?!"
"Because you're not being yourself! You're worrying the team and the coach and ME!" You pointed to yourself feeling a bit selfish without the guilt.
“I’m fine, Y/N! Nothing is wrong!”
“Then tell me! If it’s really nothing, tell me what’s been going on in that head of your Tobio!” You waited and watched as he physically restrained himself from saying anything. And you know it shouldn’t be such a serious topic or conversation, to be honest you thought this whole argument was childish. And yet, here you were acting like a child who wasn’t getting what they wanted.
The silence hurt you for some reason. It was like he didn’t trust you, he didn’t rely on your comfort or need you to listen to him. He didn’t need you.
“Fine. I’ll go home,” he said finally. You didn’t just feel a drop, you were immediately drenched in the rain. You watched him rush off through the rain while you felt something awful.
An even more awful thought sparked when he was completely out of your sight. It was possible that he didn’t need you, but you knew for a fact that you needed him.

the idea of another party between your two families had your head reeling. tobio kageyama was your worst nightmare, and even though your fathers were business partners and friends since junior high, their two children couldn’t get along to save their lives. kageyama always picked on you when one of your mothers watched both of you. he pulled your hair, took your toys, ate your snacks… your mothers joked it was just a way of showing that he liked you.
as the two of you got older and went to school together, you competed academically. the two of you were born four months apart, kageyama being the eldest, so you were in the same class quite often. you both wanted to prove you could be the heirs of the business your fathers worked so hard to build, and you just had some unspoken competition with one another.
you’re both 18 now and having a joint high school graduation party. you were head of the class, tobio right behind you, so everyone was ecstatic. the party was both of your families, friends, and business partners.
it’s a hot summer day, lemonade and watermelon set out for the guests to enjoy. you smooth down your sundress and stand at the door of the kageyama’s mansion.
though your fathers are the heads of the business, kageyama’s dad is the technical ceo, and since he already came from money, it made sense that they lived where they did. kageyama’s mother greets your family at the door, pulling everyone in for hugs.
“(y/n)! you look so stunning! that dress is beautiful!” his mother beams, smiling at you.
“thank you mrs kageyama! i bought it just for today!” you run your hands down the front of it again and smile.
“tobio is in the game room if you’d like to see him.” his father says.
‘that’s not really a suggestion.’ you think to yourself, but nod and excuse yourself, heading into the game room down the hall.
you can hear him yelling, probably at hinata as you walk through the open door. he’s playing some type of combat game.
“dammit hinata! im down!” he yells, slamming his controller against his thigh.
you stand behind him as he sits on the couch and look around the space. he’s got every gaming console a boy could ever want or need, a huge tv, and an amazing surround sound system. a large sectional fills up the room with a mini fridge in the corner.
you walk towards tobio, your nerves kicking in as you step into his view.
“fuck. gotta go hinata. the bitch is here.” he mumbles and throws off his headset.
you wave and smile softly at him, trying to be friendly. “congratulations tobio… i heard about the volleyball commitment—“
“shut up. gods you’re really annoying you know that? why are you even in here? i don’t want to see your stupid face.” he huffs and stands up, walking out of the room.
your smile instantly falters, as you fall into the couch where he was sitting. you play with the hem of your dress as you try and hold back tears. memories of him pushing you off the swings or into his pool when you couldn’t swim without a life preserver surface your mind.
“why is he so mean to me…?” you whisper.
——————————————-
everyone’s family and friends finally arrive, the adults in the kitchen and on the patio drinking wine, and the kids in the pool. shoyo, yachi, tadashi, tsuki, and kageyama are swimming, splashing each other and playing cliche pool games. you’re sitting in the jacuzzi, relaxing along with two of your friends.
“do you think kei will let me suck him off tonight?” your friend chizo whispers, staring at the blonde in the pool.
you scoff. “i doubt it. he’s as much, if not more of an asshole than tobio…”
“well, i think tadashi and i have a shot before summer ends!” your other friend namiko beams.
“i can’t believe kageyama actually agreed to both of you coming over here…” you say, sliding out of the jacuzzi and sitting on the edge of it, sliding your feet back in.
“well, we are your friends and this is a joint graduation party…” chizo mumbles.
“hey guys!” yachi yells, waving and running over to the jacuzzi.
“you wanna play truth or dare and spin the bottle with the rest of us?! i didn’t think it was fair being the only girl…” she mumbles.
namiko and chizo are practically flying out of the hot tub to dry off and get dressed. you just shrug. “i guess were in.”
yachi jumps up and down and claps. “yay! okay everyone’s meeting in the game room in ten minutes, see ya!”
she runs off again, most likely into the house to go make out with hinata.
————————-
“namiko, truth or dare?” tsukishima asks, expression as hard as always.
your group is downstairs in the game room, bottles and cans of alcohol scattered around, playing the first round of truth or dare.
“um! dare!” she bites her lip as she looks at the blonde.
“i dare you to make out with tadashi.” namiko and tadashi both gasp, cheeks flushing as they look at each other.
they’re sitting next to each other and their lips desperately collide, the desire for each other obvious through their actions.
“okay. you two can stop now…” chizo mumbles, rolling her eyes.
tadashi and namiko laugh, looking at each other. “okay, (y/n)! truth or dare?”
you shrug and smirk. “how about a dare?”
namiko smirks and looks at you, then kageyama, then back to you. “i dare you to spend seven minutes in heaven with kageyama. in his bedroom…”
“woah!”
“namiko are you serious?!”
“she’s bold… bolder than i thought…”
kageyama’s nostrils flare as he stands up from the floor. “a dares a dare. let’s go (y/n).”
you nod slowly, still in awe of namiko’s dare. you get up and follow tobio. you’ve been in his room before, but it’s been a while. there’s volleyball trophies and certificates all along dressers and pinned to the walls, there’s not a single object out of place, which is shocking for a teen boy’s bedroom.
his expression is harsh as he motions to his bed. “sit.”
you sit, watching him pull out his phone and set a timer at seven minutes. he sits next to you, tossing the phone on the bed.
“we’re not doing anything except sitting here… cool?” he mumbles, glancing at you.
“i was thinking the same thing.” you say, glaring at him.
“what’s that face for?” his brows furrow.
you sigh and shake your head. “i-i’m sick of you being mean to me! you’ve been mean to me since we were little! why?!”
tears peek at your eyes and he shrugs. “i don’t know! maybe i was jealous of you!”
you stand up and move in front of him, glaring once more. “jealous?! of me?! what on earth are you on about tobio?! i should be the one that’s jealous!”
he stands up now and looks down at you, cheeks flushed red with anger. “you’ve gotten to do whatever you wanted! it was practically set in stone that i was going to be the one to take over the company and you were going to go to college. in fact i overheard our parents deciding that once! i don’t want to take over the stupid company (y/n)! i want to play volleyball!”
“y-you heard them say that?” you whisper, looking down at your feet.
tobio’s hand grips your chin so you look up and into his eyes. “yes. that’s why i was an asshole to you all these years. why i never wanted anything to do with you. because you were free to make your own decisions and i wasn’t. it’s not fair.”
you shake your head. “i don’t want to go down the path i’m going either.” you say. “i’d rather run the company than go to college, at least for something other than a business degree.”
his eyes widen at your words, dropping your chin. “you’re serious? when did that decision come to be?”
“only a few nights ago. you should too. maybe we’ll run it together some day. if we both have business degrees, then…”
“i don’t care about the stupid business!” he practically screams.
you flinch away from him and against his bedroom door, hand going to the knob. tobio notices this and sighs. “shit… sorry… sorry i scared you…”
his expression softens and he sits at his computer desk now, putting his face in his hands.
“our lives… they’ve always been planned for us by our parents. you and i getting married, you going to college for like… a doctorate degree in something, my degree in business so i can continue to run the business… i thought… i thought being mean to you would change things, so i could write my own story…” kageyama lifts his head to speak, before placing it in his hands again.
your eyes widen. “y-you’ve… you’ve never really hated me?”
he looks up and opens his mouth to speak, but the phone alarm goes off. you walk over and stop it, staring at him. “kageyama…” you whisper.
he nods. “i… i like you… i really do…”
your cheeks flush and you step over to him, bending down to his level and kissing his lips deeply. he’s in awe, but wraps his arms around your waist and kisses you back. he soon pulls you into his lap, and you knot your fingers in his hair, continuing to kiss him deeply.
the two of you pull away, gasping for air as you look in each other’s eyes. “s-shit… tobio…” you whisper.
he smirks and picks you up, carrying you to the bed. he lays you down, gently, sliding his hands under your sundress. “(y/n)...”
you nod. “g-go ahead…”
he pulls your dress over your head and looks over your form. “beautiful…” he mumbles, large and calloused hands trailing down your stomach to your clothed sex.
he slides his thumb over the material of your panties, catching your clit which causes you to gasp out. he smirks and runs his thumb over it again. “t-tobio!”
he stops and holds a finger to his lips, shushing you. “we have to be quiet…”
you whimper at his words and nod. his brows furrow as he pulls your panties to the side, exposing your cunt to him. you cover your face with your hands, embarrassed at the predicament you’re in. “this is to make up for all these years, okay?”
you peak down at him through your hands and see him sliding his tongue along your folds. you whimper and he does it again, faster and faster he flicks his tongue through your slit. you push the back of your hand down on your mouth and moan, eyes rolling back into your head.
“feels good? you’re doing so good for me baby…” he whispers against your skin.
he dives back into you, lapping at your clit this time, suckling and teasing it with his tongue. you moan louder this time, bucking your hips up into his face. he then wraps his lips around the sensitive bud, sucking at it harshly. you can’t help but yell out, a hand gripping his black hair tightly.
“t-tobio!! it’s too much!!!” you yell out.
he pulls off and wipes his lips on the back of his hand. “c’mon baby… cum for me… let it out…”
as if he couldn’t get more aggressive, his tongue slips between your folds and inside of you, lapping at your juices that come out once again. you pull his hair and he thrusts his tongue in and out of you.
kageyama takes a moment to stare at you. your hair askew and face contorted in pleasure. one hand over your mouth and the other in his hair. he smirks and continues his quick pace.
“t-tobio!! i-im—!” you gasp out, creaming all over his face and tongue.
he slowly licks at you through the orgasm, helping you down from your high. he pulls away and licks his lips, savoring every last drop of your essence.
he takes a finger and collects the rest from his face, then sliding the finger into his mouth and sucking at it. you sit up on your elbows, watching him closely.
“do… do you need me to…?” you mumble nervously, looking to the tent in his shorts.
he shakes his head. “it was all about you… i’ll be fine…”
you nod and reach for your dress, pulling it over your head. he watches you carefully, unsure of what to say. “we should… we should do that again. not now! but sometime…”
you shrug. “i mean we don’t have long until uni starts… so i guess that’s cool…”
“not just that… i-“ he sighs and yanks at his hair. “let me take you out tomorrow? okay!?”
your eyes widen, but you slowly nod. “sure tobio. just don’t bully me…”
he lays next to you, wrapping his arms around your stomach and pulling you back into his chest. “no promises i won’t tease you, but i won’t be an asshole anymore.”
