kageyama tobio (28) came back from the gymnasium, entering his apartment.

it was dark, not a single light was turned on, only the curtains were open, showing the vast winter cityscape through the windowsill. he sighs, dropping his duffel bag into the closet, finally letting go to get a rest of today.

he could almost rest. until he chose to turn on the lights.

as soon as the flick of the lights was on, the apartment became a fluttering of balloons, lights, music, and you, where you popped up from behind the couch with the biggest smile on your face, wearing his jersey, and two big gold foil balloons writing “29”.

“tobio!” you cheered, dropping the balloons, and climbing over the couch over to hug him.

maybe his rest could wait a bit.

he still remembers his second year in karasuno, the first few months of you and him in a relationship.

you hadn’t met him in front of the gym that day, december 21st. he was wondering where you were, and even waited for you for a bit until ennoshita had to beg him to go home, otherwise he would’ve caught the cold.

and when he entered his house, it was dark. and he turned on the lights.

streamers, his jersey, and the foil balloons writing “17” with a white frosted cake in the middle of the table. mirroring the two memories, it was as if nothing had changed.

and he still loved you. the same as it was when he turned 17, he loved you equally, if not more, when he stood here, the day before he turned 29.

snapping out of the memory, you embrace him with a big hug, wrapping your arms around his neck, giving him a sweet kiss on the nose. “pre-happy birthday tobio,” you giggle. he returns the kiss, landing one onto your forehead. he looks over to see the makeshift party you made. it’s a lot of balloons. a perfect, round cake is in the middle of the table.

“it’s the same as always, even the cake.” you say, taking your arms off him and pulling him to the living room. “i tried to make it milk-flavoured, but it turned out a bit like vanilla.”

kageyama stands there next to the couch, patiently waiting as you pull out all the presents you hid underneath the table. he’s not even looking at the cake or the presents, but at you, wondering how in the world he’s in a relationship, with you of all people.

“i love you.” he blurts out, catching you a bit of surprise. you turn to face him and grin.

“and i love you more, tobio.” you give him another sweet hug, “no matter what.”

“because you’re my winter solstice, and i’ll spend all my longest nights every year with you.”

he knows you'll be there every year, the night he gets older, the night you'll celebrate yet another birthday with him.

the first person to always say "happy birthday" to him is you.

and tonight at 11:59 pm, you'll wish another happy birthday with a kiss to kageyama tobio (29), because he knows you'll always be there with him.

and you always will.

sugawara koushi thought it was a great idea to bring you, his wife, along to his job at the school. you had said that you were good with kids before.

it was, in fact, a great idea.

as the kindergarteners waddled into the classroom dropping their bags at the cubbies, their eyes sparkled and their legs ran right towards you. they squealed in delight as you kneeled down to see them.

“who are you? you're so pretty!”

“are you sugawara-sensei’s wife?”

“can you be my wife?”

“now, now, kids, let's not go taking wives. she is mine, and only mine,” sugawara grinned as a crowd formed around you. his idea of bringing you here was turning out wonderfully.

“kou, i'm sure they won't take me away, but just look at their cute little faces,” you said as you cupped your hands around a girl's cheeks, resulting in the girl giggling and turning red. “i think they've already claimed most of my heart.” 

“alright, but don't go stealing one of the children home, i wouldn't like a call from a parent asking why their child is missing,” sugawara laughed as he started taking out the whiteboards for the day.

through the school day, it was clear that you were not just good with kids, but exceptionally talented with working with them. helping the kids out with reading, writing, math, it was like you were a teacher for as long as sugawara was.

the most fun parts was when the kids had a bit of free time. during recess, they all huddled around you, asking questions about sugawara as he took out his own lunch, watching you interact with the students with a grin on his face.

“is it true you gave the seal socks to sugawara-sensei?”

you chuckled at the memory. “yeah, i did. first year anniversary of us being together. i still can't believe he still wears it,” you look at sugawara, who’s grinning back. he’s wearing the seal socks.

“how did you two meet? was it super lovey-dovey like in the movies?”

“nah, i met her in my last year in high school. both of us were smart, and we had to work together one day. then we got along very well,” sugawara said smugly, all the eyes turning from you to him.

“we did not get along well in the first few days, actually,” you laughed. “he had too much volleyball practice. so instead of waiting at the library i would just wait in the gym.”

as the kids dispersed to their own fun activities, a few kids dragged you along to the kitchen playset.

“we’re gonna play family! can you be the mom?” one kid eagerly asked, eyes shining. you chuckled and agreed.

as you were intently cooking dinner for the family of two dogs and children, sugawara comes over.

“you’re so focused on making food for them,” sugawara says.

“well, i am their mom for today,” you turn your head to look at him, smiling.

“i’m sure you would be a great mom. maybe you should be,” he smirks slightly as he watches you sigh.

“not in front of them, kou,” you mumble as you put each plastic steak onto the children’s plates. “you and i can say those things later.”

“alright, alright, fine,” sugawara chuckles as he goes back to his desk to start packing.

as the students wave goodbye to you before leaving the classroom to get picked up, sugawara latches onto you from the back, resting his head on your shoulder.

“i really should take you here every day.”

“i still have my own work, y’know.”

admirer!akaashi deliberately sits in the library at a table not so far away but still able to see you from afar. he brought bokuto, but bokuto couldn't stand sitting in the silent library and accidentally knocked down a few books on the shelves. the loud noise causes you to look up, to see akaashi looking right back at you. you quietly laugh, palming your mouth as you look back to your studies.

admirer!akaashi watches you temporarily leave your seat, then suddenly starts writing a note, asking you if you wanted to stop by a bakery later.

admirer!akaashi quietly gets out of his seat to put that note on your desk, not to realize you were already almost at your seat.

flustered!akaashi trying to explain to you how he wanted to invite you to go to the bakery, but stammering due to embarrassment. he chooses to give the note to you instead.

pt. 1

“hey, tsukishima,” you wave at him, hanging your schoolbag on your chair next to him as you start to unpack for the school day at karasuno. he mutters a “hey” back, taking off his headphones right as the first morning bell rings. you receive a notification buzz from your phone, so you quietly try to check it before the teacher finds out. 

it's not anything really, just your boyfriend.

“i hate to say this but i might need to cancel our date tonight. my sensei just told me i had a test tomorrow and i need to cram.”

you know you can't do much about it. to you, it's an obvious lie from him. your boyfriend doesn't study. he's pulled this excuse multiple times before, but you really can't do anything except sigh and try to reschedule, only for the next to get cancelled again. when will he ever just come clean?

closing your phone and putting back in your bag, you slump onto your desk, resting your chin on your arms as you mindlessly read the agenda on the chalkboard. next to you, you hear tsukishima scoff under his breath.

“he ditched you again? which excuse was it this time?” he says, propping his elbow up. you turn your head to look at him and sigh.

“exam.” quoting with your fingers, rolling your eyes. “there’s literally no exams after midterms. i don’t know what he’s talking about.”

tsukishima laughs. “seriously?”

you nod.

“that’s lame.” 

“right? like, you can just say you want to hang out with your friends, there’s no reason to-”

“tsukishima? [name]? anything you’d like to share with the class?” your teacher announces. both of you look up at her, while the rest of the class are staring at the two of you. tsukishima coughs, looking away.

“um, no,” you apologize, bowing your head. “i’m sorry kanedo-sensei.” your teacher replies, then faces back to the board. you look at tsukishima, who’s back to looking at the board as well. sighing, you go back to paying attention to the class.

“you should just break up.”

“huh?” you hear tsukishima mutter something, turning your head to face him. “what did you say?”

“…nothing. focus before he calls us out again.” tsukishima eyes you, still facing the board. you roll your eyes again, mumbling about how he never tells you anything.

you fidget in your seat, eyeing the clock as if it’ll run away if you don’t. the last bell was seconds away, but your teacher just had to keep you guys until the bell.

“kanedo-sensei is pissing me off,” you grumble to tsukishima, who’s already packing up his books. “there’s no point in keeping us here.” he mutters an approval.

as soon as the bell rang, you sprang out of your seat, cleaning up your books and stationery at quite the speed of light. tsukishima stares.

“why are you so quick today,” he asks. you look up at him, who’s already done. you scoff.

“i’m the one that’s too quick?” you motion between the difference between the two. “anyways, i have a classmate that needs tutoring. yachi transferred him over to me. and i supposedly had a date tonight, so i made the session earlier. and now i have to run to this guy’s house.” you stuff everything into your bag before running out the classroom door. “cya tomorrow, tsukishima!”

tsukishima slowly pushed in his chair, not even looking at where you left. who does yachi even tutor?

yamaguchi met him in the hallways.

“what’s up? you look a bit more annoyed than normal,” he asks tsukishima.

“it’s nothing.” tsukishima grits out, rubbing his temples.

“i could obviously do better than that guy.”

after running like a maniac, reaching the house that your student was in, you paused outside the front door. you put your hands on your knees trying to catch your breath. the front door peers open, and you look up.

it’s a guy you’ve seen around in the hallways. what was his name? tsukishima had mentioned him before. black hair, dark blue eyes… was he also on the volleyball team?

after a long pause of eye contact between you two, he coughs, and you immediately straighten up.

“i-i’m sorry for being a bit late, my class was let out late,” you apologize. the guy blinks.

“huh?” he cocks his head to the side. “you said 4:30 PM. it’s only 3:30.” now it’s you blinking. (guys pls pretend he didn’t go to practice today)

“oh.” you cough. “i’m terribly sorry, i can leave now if you want, i’ll just come back later…” you back up, bowing.

he opens the door. “no, i mean, it’s fine, you can come in,” he sputters. “i have nothing to do before. we can start earlier. i just need to shower.”

“oh, um,” you say. a bit frozen, you gain your consciousness back, walking slowly towards the door. “thank you.” you enter his house.

it’s a nice home, to be honest. everything’s clean, but somehow feels a bit empty.

“you can come in my room, i don’t really have a lot of places outside of that for studying,” he mutters, walking to his room. you follow him, looking around as he leads to his room.

you enter his bedroom. it’s extremely clean. except for his books. his bed is cleanly put together, but on his desk, it’s a horrible mess. books upon books, but not a single thing actually open. you sigh. clean but can’t study. the best pairing ever.

“well, i, uh,” he clears his throat. “i’m gonna go and, um, shower, if that’s like, okay with you,” he says, looking away.

you blink. “oh, yeah, sure, go ahead.” the awkward silence between you two only made it worse to be here. he starts walking out. you catch him right before he leaves. “oh, wait, what was your name again?”

he turns around, looking back from the door.

“kageyama.”

short and straightforward was his thing.

but on that day, when he was going to kneel down and ask for your hand in marriage, he knew he couldn't clip it short.

he had wrote a letter that took him almost two weeks to write.

he made sure each word was thoughtful, and that no sentence was there for nothing.

he poured his love, his soul, all his emotions he couldn't ever describe to you immediately into the letter.

on that night he was to kneel down, the night you were dressed in your sundress, the night the waves were almost holding their breath, waiting for him to say it, he didn't.

he didn't need to.

as he got on one knee on the sand, you turned around, looking at him, him fumbling around with his pocket to get the box, you closed your hands on your mouth.

his mouth opened to recite the letter he lived upon, he was cut off by your almost inaudible vow of “yes”.

it was only a whisper, but at the moment you picked up the ring and held it tightly in your embrace, he stood up and hugged you so tight yet so softly, a tear sliding down his cheek as you two stood there as the waves slowly spread in the distance.

mornings with newly-wed!iwaizumi are always–and i mean always–so sweet. 

he’s someone who likes early exercise, so he gets out of bed pretty early. he’ll never forget you, though. waking up to see your sleeping face always fills him. so whenever he leaves before you wake up, he’ll put a snack, a flask of tea, or sometimes a note saying “i’ll come back at around _:__ am” just to make sure you wouldn’t be surprised at why he wouldn’t be there in bed, with you. and he will always make sure he arrives back home on time to not make you worry.

so as you’re making breakfast for the two of you, he comes back home. you check the time. 8:02 am. you give a small smile as you turn the fire on the stovetop to low heat, walking towards him.

“you’re never late, hmm,” you wrap your arms around his neck after he drops his stuff down, and you give him a small kiss on his nose. he returns the kiss with one on your lips.

“i told you, i’d never lie to you about anything. not even about when i’m coming home,” iwaizumi smiles as he sees your grin, wanting to give another kiss. as he leans in for another, you back away.

“nuh uh, you’re smelly and sweaty, plus your food is going to overboil. go shower, haji,” you giggle, going back to the kitchen. he chuckles as you leave his side, the kiss on his nose still a faint feeling.

“alright, my wife,” he calls out behind him, going to the bathroom. “your family, your rules.”

“oh, quiet down, haji, you’re so cheesy,” you laugh, blush slowly creeping toward your cheeks.

as you load up the two bowls with rice and agedashi tofu, iwaizumi entered the kitchen, wearing his home clothes with a towel on his neck. He subtly perked up at the smell of breakfast, a small smile forming on his face.

“agedashi tofu,” he said, like he was citing a proverb. you looked up at him, watching his eyes go from rested to bright in less than two seconds. he looked like he was back in junior high, getting excited to see whatever would be on the lunch menu. and you loved it.

“mhm,” you grin as you slide a bowl over to his side. “your favorite. i learned it yesterday,” you watch as he quietly stares at the bowl, then back at you, slowly sitting down across from you.

“thank you,” he says as he starts diving into the food. a quiet moment between you two, something that both of you guys cherished every morning, no matter what was on the menu.

a few minutes pass, and iwaizumi is already done with his serving. “i really should cook for you one day,” he looks at you, cheesing a stupid grin.

“i thought we already agreed on breakfast duty and dish washing duty,” you laugh, finishing the last bite of rice. “i thought we were to follow routines?” you say as you raise an eyebrow.

he grabs your bowl and puts it on top of his, getting up and placing a kiss on your head. “i would stop following routines if it meant i could take care of you better,” he says, putting the dirty utensils into the kitchen sink. you sigh, turning around on your chair, smiling at your husband.

“it’s almost 9. i reckon you leave for work soon,” iwaizumi notes, glancing at the clock. “i placed your washed clothes onto the bed and folded them. i don’t have any appointments in the morning today, so-” he’s cut off by you embracing him from the back, resting your cheek on his back.

“y’know i love you, right, haji,” you grin, hugging tighter. he smiles.

“i know. i love you more,” he turns around, planting a kiss on your temple. “i’d do anything for you. even ruining my schedule. and you know my routines are important, but not more important than you,” you giggle as you hear him talk.

“its getting close. i suggest you leave soon, but if you won’t, i’ll help you,” he smirks as he picks you up and walks to the bedroom. you yelp at the sudden upheave, but you keep planting kisses onto his face as he drops you down onto the bed.

“alright, i’ll leave,” you sigh with a smile. “your family, your rules,” laughing, you pick out the clothes from the bed. iwaizumi flicks your head with his fingers, earning a “whaddya do that for?!” before chuckling and leaving the room to wash the dishes.

as you get to the apartment door, you say goodbye to him. he drops the plates down into the sink and wipes his hands with a towel, then comes up to you and gives you a hug and a kiss right on your nose.

“bye, my wife,” he says, taking himself away from the hug. he wouldn’t have done it, but you were about to miss the train.

“bye, my husband haji!” you grin as you open the door, waving goodbye as you left.

as your figure departed to the stairs, iwaizumi closed the door and stared back at the you-empty apartment. he sighed and went back to clean the dishes.

he loved you, more than anything.

this everlasting morning routine was a reminder of that to him.
