Do you have any tips/advice for someone who is interested in starting to learn animation? Especially when it comes to animating to music, I'm curious how the process works and how you plan and time it in order to match the beat/timing of whatever song or audio you are animating to? I really like your style so I'm curious what your personal process is like :)

Hey! Sorry it’s taken me so long to respond to this! I was busy, and I replied, but then accidentally lost the whole post and had to work up the motivation to rewrite it haha 😅

(However, I hope maybe it’s worth the wait, because I tried to make this in depth, and made an animation timelapse for it!)

Anyway, thank you so much for your ask! Every person has their own journey with animation, and their own techniques that work best for them. I can only speak from my own experiences— and I’m definitely still learning, as well. However, I hope you find this helpful and/or interesting!

My tips for getting into animation

1.Don’t wait, just… get started! :)

I always found animation fascinating and awesome, but I had no idea how to do it. Not knowing where to start, myself, though, I decided to just go ahead and try animating. The art app I use, Procreate, has a relatively simple built-in animation software, where you can animate frame-by-frame, (kind of flip-book style) which is where I started trying animation, and is what I continue to use today! (Fancier software might make it easier, but if it works, it works! Besides, I definitely recommend using a simpler software if you’re interested in improving your skill, because it forces you to learn how to create the movements with your drawings only, rather than programs.) Also, if you don’t have an animation software at all yet, you can get started with traditional animation and flip books. It’s a lot harder, but it will definitely build your skills!

When you start animating, just draw, have fun, and think about how things move. You don’t need to take a class, (not that a class wouldn’t be useful too) just experiment and see what happens. I found that a lot of my knowledge of how to animate has come through trial and error— animating something and saying “hmm, that doesn’t look right. What if I changed it in X way?” until I find a result I like.

2. You don’t need to take classes to learn. Using YouTube videos and books can give a lot of formal animation knowledge, without actually enrolling in courses. It’s important to practice, but there’s so much knowledge you can find (for free!) from skilled animators. Take advantage of it :)

How I animate to music/make animatics

When I’m animating to audio, I like to find and download the audio first, and put it into my editing software. Then, I listen to it, and decide what I want to animate to it. Usually, I do a quick storyboard to figure out the general “plot” of the animatic, and certain sequences I want to add in, before starting on the final animation.

(Often I just do quick sketches on paper for specific sequences I want to remember to make)

Then, I animate chronologically with the audio, which I find is helpful for making sure that the animatic flows properly. To make sure that the timing is aligned with the audio, I like to put clips into my editing software as I make them, then adjust them as necessary, before animating the next part, so that it’s easier to make changes.

(Here’s a speed paint of a sequence from one of my animatics to give you an example of what my process is like)

When I’m done with the animation, I watch it together with the audio, and make any adjustments, as needed.
