How suggestive does a work need to be to constitute adding the smut tag? Like hypothetically where would tasteful consensual choking and nothing further fall on that line?

This is one of those questions where the answer is, unfortunately, “it depends”, but I’ll try to make my logic as clear (and as painless) as possible 😅.

For me, the main deciding factor is intent, not just how much skin is showing.

Some general guidelines to give you a clearer picture:

Casual or contextual stuff is fine. Beaches, swimsuits, summer vibes, characters looking cute or attractive, all good. But a beach scene that is clearly framed to be erotic, with poses, expressions, or focus meant to be sexually suggestive, goes into smut.

Same with clothing. Little clothing in casual, domestic, or romantic situations, like pajamas, underwear, or cozy at-home scenes, is fine. Little clothing used with the intention of being erotic, meant to arouse the viewer or reader, is smut.

Nudity follows the same rule. Censored nudity in non-sexual contexts, for example bathing together, onsen scenes, domestic moments, especially considering cultural contexts like Japan, is fine as long as the focus is on the situation, not the bodies themselves. Fully nude content with clear sexual or erotic intent is smut.

Uncensored nudity is always smut, regardless of intention. If female nipples and/or general genitals are visible, that goes straight into smut spaces. Period.

And yes, Tumblr forces censorship, we all know Tumblr is terrified of nipples. But the important part here is the intention of the original work.

If the original image or scene clearly fits smut criteria, then it is smut, even if it is censored for Tumblr. Also, sorry but “lazy censorship” still counts 😆 If the censor barely covers nipples or genitals, that is still smut. There is a difference between “non sexual nudity” and “trying to get away with it”. Please censor properly, my dudes~

Being fully clothed does not automatically make something safe either. Heavy making out, groping, grinding, tight clothes clearly used to emphasize sexual tension, all of that can still be smut even if nobody takes anything off.

Romantic intimacy is not the same as smut. Sleeping together, cuddling, soft domestic scenes, even implied nudity under sheets or minimal clothing, are fine when the focus is affection, closeness, or emotional intimacy, not sexual arousal. Think “covered with sheets” energy, not “look at this body” energy.

And no, I am absolutely not saying that a passionate kiss, flirtatious looks, or characters giving each other “please ruin me” eyes automatically count as smut. Sexual tension is not the same thing as sexual content. There is a difference between flirting and actually doing the deed.

Sex is smut. No mystery there.

Regarding violence, fights, or tense scenes with chemistry:

If the priority of the scene is the fight or the conflict, it stays normal, even if there is some tension or light kink adjacent stuff happening. Tokusatsu is full of that, after all.

But if the scene stops being about pain or danger and starts being about pleasure, that is where the line is crossed. A silly and dumb but effective thumb you can use is something like this:

- Pain faces and pain sounds: probably normal.

- Orgasm faces and pleasure sounds: yeah, that is smut 😅

Once the reactions clearly shift from suffering to enjoyment, we are no longer watching (just) a fight scene.

So yes, I guess “tasteful consensual choking” really depends less on the choking itself and more on how much the characters are enjoying it 😆😆

If you are still unsure, here is a very practical test:

- If you were posting this on AO3, would you tag it as Mature or Explicit?

- If the answer is yes, it belongs in Tokusmut

This is not a perfect system, but it is a practical and fairly reliable guideline when things feel ambiguous.

Also, adding the Tokusmut tag does not replace proper content warnings. If your work includes choking, BDSM, or anything similar, please tag it clearly. I will be posting a small tutorial in the following days on how to mute tags and words on different platforms, so people can curate their own experience.

And if you are truly fighting with the universe because you cannot decide whether something should be smut or not, ask a friend whose opinion you trust. If you are still unsure after that, just tag it as smut. It is always better for a borderline work to end up in the smut feed than for something borderline sexual to land in the work-safe feed.

So… are the prompts and guidelines exactly the same?

Yes! The guidelines, prompts, rules, and overall structure remain exactly the same for both blogs.

Then what is the difference between TokuShipping and TokuSmut?

Content, and content only.

TokuShipping Week is meant for non-suggestive and non-explicit fanworks.

TokuSmut Week is where we will repost all erotic or suggestive fanworks, including fanart, fanfiction, and any other type of fan creation that falls under NSFW or mature content.

What is the official NSFW tag? And what about daily tags?

For Tumblr, the mandatory tags for any suggestive or explicit content are:

#TokuSmut Week

#TokuSmut Week 2026

These tags are required so that anyone who wants to avoid NSFW content can easily mute them or avoid searching for them altogether.

For X/Twitter and Bluesky, the equivalent tags are:

#TokuSmutWk

#TokuSmutWk26

You may still use #TokuShipping Week and related tags, including daily prompt tags, but they are no longer mandatory for NSFW content.

The only strict requirement is that any content that can be considered suggestive or explicit must always include the TokuSmut tag, so people who do not want to encounter this type of content on Tumblr, X/Twitter, or Bluesky can mute it at the account level. That way, no matter what other tags a post uses, if it includes the TokuSmut tag, it will be automatically hidden for them.

Tumblr does not really allow explicit content anymore. How does this blog work?

We are aware that Tumblr’s NSFW policies have changed since the content purge. However, some flexibility still exists, and users continue to post mature content by adapting to the current rules.

For visual content such as fanart:

We recommend posting a cropped and/or censored version on Tumblr.

Include a link to the full uncensored version hosted elsewhere, such as X/Twitter, Bluesky, AO3, Pixiv, or a dedicated hosting site.

For written content:

Tumblr tends to be less strict with text, so posting your fic directly should generally be fine.

If your fanwork is hosted elsewhere (AO3, Fanfiction.Net, etc.), we suggest sharing a link along with a short summary and any necessary content warnings.

I want to share explicit visual content, but I only use Tumblr. What can I do?

In that case, we suggest one of the following options:

Use an image, video, or general multimedia hosting site that allows NSFW content

Create an account on a social media platform that permits NSFW uploads

Create an AO3 account

Please note that AO3 requires images to be hosted externally, whether on a hosting site or a social platform. For practical purposes, the first two options tend to be the most straightforward.

If you strongly prefer not to be active on any social media besides Tumblr, but still want to use AO3 as an archive, another option is to create a private or low-activity social account solely to host your NSFW visual content, then embed it into AO3. While AO3 is best known for written works, it fully allows images, GIFs, and even videos.

Does this apply to AO3 or Pixiv as well?

Not in the same way.

Platforms that rely heavily on recommendation algorithms often lack strong built-in content filtering, which is why we require a mute-friendly NSFW tag on social media.

AO3, on the other hand, has an excellent filtering system. Users can decide exactly what they want or do not want to see, even within the same tag, including whether to view Mature or Explicit works. All fanworks will still be collected under TokuShipping Week 2026, regardless of rating, so requiring an extra NSFW event tag there would be redundant. You may still use TokuSmut tags on AO3 if you wish, but they are completely optional.

Pixiv works in a similar way. While it does use recommendations, the platform requires creators to label content as suggestive, explicit, or eroguro before posting. NSFW content is hidden by default unless users manually enable it in their account settings, and it is inaccessible without an account. Because Pixiv already handles content visibility very effectively, event NSFW tags are optional and often redundant. Given Pixiv’s 10-tag limit, it is generally better to prioritize the main event tags, such as TokuShippingWeek and TokuShippingWeek2026.
