Tolono, Illinois

This is a southbound train of the Illinois Central Gulf crossing the N&W, former Wabash, at Tolono, Illinois. I believe the "338" would be number of miles between this spot and Detroit along the Wabash.

The lead locomotive is an EMD GP38-2 built in 1974 and is named for “P. G. T. BEAUREGARD”. It's mind numbing to me that a railroad would name a locomotive for the person, a confederate general, who started the Civil War at Fort Sumter.

On the Main Line of Mid-America

This image was made one mile south of Tolono, Illinois, with the train being northbound. The train is approaching the crossing with the former Wabash here, then the Norfolk & Western. We're alongside the mainline of the Illinois Central of course.
