The Florentine (detail)
Tom Richards
This gem, the Mini Oramics was delivered (under all Covid safety rules and cleaning) recently for me to learn and compose with. Big thanks to Tom Richards, the brill musician, and maker of this incarnation of Daphne Oram's Oramics genius. I am really appreciative of Tom's kindness and thoughtful offer as it's been more than tough and I hope to devote some time to creating something meaningful - the circles I have marked here on the left are fitting metaphors and sound tremendously scary. If someone hasn't already there should be a post on how many times Louis mentions Tom Richards e.g. 1D Day. I swear there's other moments, like whenever they talk about who else could have been in 1D, Louis always mentions Tom Richards. When Louis saw him on the X-Factor and didn't find his performance amazing, like maybe that was the thing that told him he deserved to be in 1D. (I don't know about the last bit).
Hmm I had no idea Louis mentioned Tom Richards, nor that he’d talked about him on 1D Day. Thanks for the message; that is interesting. Here’s Tom Richards during TXF 2018 (with Louis judging).
People’s paths diverge, and in retrospect it can seem like destiny. For example, the way the boys’ paths have diverged since hiatus can create all sorts of success/failure narratives in retrospect.
“Tom is a tough competitor, he never gives up” Simon
[3] Simon Rösner (GER) bt Tom Richards (ENG) 11-3, 12-10, 11-6 (37m)
Simon
I got off to a good start in the first and I went on to win that quite comfortably. Then in the second, I had a lead which I gave away,” Rösner admitted. “Tom played really well in that game. He really pushed me and he was game ball up. I had to make sure to get back to into it and I did that well. In the third, I carried my lead throughout and I am glad to win another three-setter against Tom.
He is a tough competitor, he never gives up, no matter what the score is. He always fight for the point. With that in mind, you always know that you are in for a tough time.
I am really looking forward to playing on the glass court because it is always nicer to play on it. It is good that everything is together now. All the matches are in the same venue, and I will be up for a big fight on Thursday.
“A really enjoyable match” says Tom...
Tom Richards (ENG) 3-2 Nathan Lake (ENG) 4-11, 16-14, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9 (71m)
Nathan (on Twitter) Disappointed to lose 11-9 in the 5th yesterday in rd1 of the British Open, but all credit to Tom Richards for for playing the big points better. Overall, very pleased with my performance and throughly enjoyed getting to play on the glass court in front of an English crowd!
Tom I know Nathan well. We are friends off court and have played a few times this year, so I knew what to expect in terms of his skills. It’s a glass court, which I prefer, but I’m sure he prefers as well and it’s quite dead on here and we both like to take it in a lot. It was a really enjoyable match, win or lose.
The European Team was a stressful week because you don’t want to let your teammates down and so coming into this I had to find my mental toughness and I’m glad I managed to do that.
It’s not ideal to change from the glass court to the traditional courts tomorrow, but it’s the same for both of us. I’m sure Simon would prefer to be on glass too and it’s unusual to switch from glass to traditional, but we train largely on traditional courts, so there are no excuses there.
