Tom's clothes part 4
In other news, I KNOW he's always been like that. And I KNOW it's his favourite everything...
But can Tom please at least pretend to own different clothes?
*she grumbles and continues to stare*
Tom's clothes part 10
One thing Tom did not give up in his transition from chauffeur to land agent was the requirement for him to wear silly pants.

So the first shift in Tom's wardrobe seems to occur somewhere in season 3 between episode 1 (Mary's Wedding) and episode 3 (Edith Jilted). In episode 1 Tom wears his regular clothes for dinner and all events until the end...
...when he's forced into a morning coat by Violet and Isobel for Matthew and Mary's wedding.
Then Tom and Sybil are absent from Downton for an episode before returning for Edith's wedding to Anthony Strallan where we see him in a dinner jacket before Edith's wedding.
And a morning coat for the wedding itself.
Then there's a twist in the next episode (The Bransons Flee Ireland) where he shows up unexpectedly at Downton with none of his belongings and has to borrow clothes temporarily. However, even by the end of the episode Tom is still wearing regular clothes at dinner (presumably not borrowed by this point, judging by the fit.)
Then, in episode 5 (Sybil) he's back in a dinner jacket...
...which he wears to dinner and events for the rest of the season.
We pick up in season 4 and Tom wears black tie in episodes 1 (Mary's Grief) and 2 (Matthew's Will).
Then we come to episode 3 (Rape) when Downton hosts a large party including many highly positioned nobles (a Duchess even!) where we first see Tom wearing white tie.
Edna Braithwaite even remarks "They finally got you into white tie, I see." From this point forward, Tom generally dresses as the rest of the family does, especially for dinner and other occasions. While he often expresses discomfort with his clothes he seems to know he's lost the fight on what he's wearing. Violet laid down the law in 3x1
Tom never stood a chance.
